  • The Real Santa Lives In Glasgow

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Dec 24, 2014

"It's everyday and all year for Santa," Santa Claus said. It was going to be a long day, but there will certainly be some magic in the air as he worked through. He took a quick look at his hair and beard in the mirror. Time to strap on his boots and striped socks and get ready for his big debut. He left behind the big red coat and heavy clothes, because that's for traveling the world in one day, not for the bright lights of the camera. Santa Claus spent a few hours prepping the day before with...

  • Dear Santa

    Dec 24, 2014

Local students are lucky that Santa decided to share these letters and kind words he received from students at some Valley County schools, including Irle Elementary School in Glasgow. The big man in red is extremely thankful for the teachers and students who put together these letters to help keep him informed about the wishes of all the area children. IRLE SCHOOL Mrs. Etchart's Kindergarten Class Dear Santa, How are you? How is Mrs. Claus? Could I please have a snow globe maker, a skipping...

  • County Airport Marks One Year In Airport Management

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Dec 24, 2014

There won’t be any huge celebrations marking one year. No balloons, no flowers, no parties, only a silent passing of the one year anniversary since Valley County took over the Wokal Field Glasgow International Airport. While the airport is out of sight, out of mind for most of the local community, the economic impact is big enough it can be felt. There hasn’t been a recent economic impact study on the local airport, but the most recent one finished in 2012 estimates statewide airports provide 18,800 jobs, have over $600 million in payroll and...

  • Walking By Faith: Traveling Around The United States By Foot

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Dec 24, 2014

It all started with a story. Prayer Circles by Mark Batterson. He never even finished the book before he was ready for a challenge. Something that even he, himself, thought was a little crazy. He was set to walk all the way around the perimeter of the United States. Randy Montgomery wasn't dissatisfied from life completely. He'd been a manager at a cement plant and a logging trucker for many years. But at the age of 62 he found himself feeling like there had to be something more to life. He has...

  • Here's To The Power Rangers

    Janet Bailey, My Opinion|Dec 24, 2014

In Opheim, we have had more than our share of fog in the last several months. In the summer it is OK as it usually means that we will get moisture in 90 days, so we put up with it. In the winter, however, we wonder how much snow we will be getting in 90 days. We will certainly be tired of it come March or April. It makes for beautiful scenery with it's heavy white coating on the trees and power lines. The beauty is short lived as it causes so much damage as can be attested by our local electric...

  • Christmas Shopping?

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Dec 24, 2014

Christmas shopping? Do you remember when a Schafer or Parker fountain pen and ever sharp pencil were a sure gift for someone in your life? This was way before ball point pens. You needed a bottle of ink to fill this pen. Put the pen in the ink bottle, extend the lever on the pen and let it fill. Good for another several letters. Then there was the nice blue bottle of Evening in Paris cologne. I think that every mother looked forward receiving at least one of these bottles under the Christmas tree. The lovely blue bottle was an enticement for...

  • Land Bill Agreement A Talking Point In Montana

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Dec 24, 2014

News releases sent out cited the Montana Lands Bill Agreement as historic. The announcement came Dec. 3 and caused some confusion as it was included in the National Defense Authorization Act. Sen. Jon Tester, Sen. John Walsh and U.S. Rep. Steve Daines all stood by the legislative package that included eight Montana-based lands and resource bills. While that agreement doesn't seem to have any direct impact on Eastern Montanans, information is still being released on the agreement. The package included changes in the Rocky Mountain Front...

  • Paying The Border Patrol

    Sen. Jon Tester, Political Opinion|Dec 24, 2014

Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., last week released the following statement after the president signed the Border Patrol Agent Pay Reform Act into law. Tester, along with Senator John McCain, R-Ariz., introduced and successfully pushed the bipartisan legislation through Congress earlier this month. Tester's statement: “The men and women of the Border Patrol work tough jobs to keep us safe and deserve a pay system that meets their needs. This new law will ensure a predictable pay system, save taxpayer dollars, make government work better and strengthen...

  • Scotties Roll Into Break 5-0

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Dec 24, 2014

The Glasgow Scotties got what they wanted – an early bit of revenge against Malta, the team that ended their season last year at State. G-town went downtown against the visiting Mustangs last Friday at the Dawg House, improving to 5-0 overall in their 2B opener. They rallied from nine points down in the first quarter and pulled away for a 65-60 win in a battle that was tied at the half and after three quarters. "We just had to do what we do," GHS coach Norm Braaten told the Courier, d...

  • Veteran Malta Too Much For Young GHS

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Dec 24, 2014

The M-ettes of Malta are M-pressive this season. This the Scotties know. Malta's veteran basketball team visited GHS last week and showed in a 58-15 victory why it's a contender for the state Class B title a year after finishing second. “You know, Malta is tough,” Scotties coach Jon Kolstad told The Courier. “They've got good shooters. They're an experienced, tough team. I think they're one of the top four teams in Class B in the state. They were good competition for our girls to play.” Kolsad said the Scotties played OK, handling the press a...

  • Glasgow 23rd Of 46 Teams At CMR Mat Meet

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Dec 24, 2014

Four Glasgow Scottie wrestlers came within a match of placing last weekend at the strong CMR Holiday Classic Invitational Tournament: Kasey Seyfert at 120, Cody King at 145, Tony Kaiser at 170 and heavyweight Joe Doney. Each advanced to the consolation fifth round. As a team, the Scotties finished in the middle – 23rd in the 46-team tournament. “Those four guys had a great showing,” coach Jory Casterline told The Courier. “I think we wrestled alright.” Seyfert is sixth at 120 in the Class B-C state rankings. Casterline also credited Matt Reyl...

    Carin Barnett, For The Courier|Dec 24, 2014

The Ice Dawgs Squirts travelled to Butte for the four-game MAHA festival last weekend. They went 4-0. The Dawgs would take on Butte early in Saturday morning – and take the early lead on the scoreboard. Peyton Hubbard started the scoring on Trevor Dulaney's assist. The scoring would only continue from there. Dylan Hlad chipped one in. Michael Hoyer added another. Dulaney put one in off Jack Cornwell's assist and Colter Barnett would tally six in the match. Tatum Hansen turned back all seven shots for the 10-0 win and the team's first shutout. G...
