  • Veterans Get More Than A Day

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Nov 12, 2014

"I'm here to tell you the people of France have not forgotten, their children and grandchildren have not forgotten and France will never forget," Laurence Mackarena, Frech consul for the state of Montana said a few weeks ago. She was visiting to honor three of Glasgow's WWII veterans, while a group of friends, family members and veterans attended to witness it. The three men did not show much emotion as she spoke of their past and their service. Perhaps they couldn't hear as well, as they're... Full story

The keynote speaker at the event, Robert O'Neill, spoke about brotherhood, camaraderie and remembering those who didn't come home. What no one knew at the time is that he was the man who made world history in recent years. He spoke out last week, stating that he pulled the trigger in May 2011 to end Osama bin Laden's life. O'Neill, part of Navy SEAL Team 6 that stormed the...

  • First Winter Storm Breaks Snowfall Record

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Nov 12, 2014

Winter advisory warnings and watches went out for Northeast Montana over the past weekend – and they proved to be correct. The National Weather Service in Glasgow forecast accumulations in Valley County ranging from 4 to 6 inches of snow. That prediction came pretty close to what was reported as the snow finally stopped falling Monday morning. NWS Glasgow reported just over 6 inches of snowfall Monday, breaking a record set in 1940 for Glasgow. The previous daily record of 4.6 inches on Nov. 9...

In making the gift, Lacey Chatten Copenhaver said it included memorials given in Aaron’s name as well as proceeds from the Aaron “Chappy” Chatten Memorial Softball Tournament, which has been held each July for the past four summers. “Aaron’s passion was community service,” Copenhaver said. “And the GHS Trust memorial will help others for a long time.” A 2002 graduate of Glasgow High School, Aaron continued his educa...

  • The Depressing Bison Meeting

    Sierra Dawn Stoneberg-Holt, My Opinion|Nov 12, 2014

There have been two more state bison meetings since last I wrote. One was July 14 and 15 in Billings to propose testable alternatives for an Environmental Impact Statement, and one was Oct. 9 in Great Falls to develop those alternatives. There was a lot to be depressed about at those meetings. A depressing number of people travelled from western Montana to Billings to say they want a herd of bison, and they want to keep it in our backyards. They didn’t comprehend why that was an issue for us. Depressingly, the bison discussion group r... Full story

  • And The Wheels Keep On Turning

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Nov 12, 2014

After being confined in a closed space for the first nine months of our lives, when we finally find the exit our first action involve movement of arms and legs a-flailing wildly as the doctor slaps our bottom. Our first wobbling steps into mobile freedom are accompanied my shrieks of laughter and buckets of tears from parents and other assorted family and neighbors. The second milestone has been achieved and our little brains aren't even able to comprehend what we've just done. Folks my age can recall with fondness the “Baby Tender.” It was...

  • Rounding Up The Cattle

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|Nov 12, 2014

Ranchers are busy rounding up their cattle and getting the calves ready for market. Roundup can take from a few days to several weeks. One of the most impressive sights is when the cattle are being gathered up and moved to corrals on the Wittmayer Grazing Association. Watching association members on horseback urging the cattle on evokes thoughts of long ago roundups. While my husband was out on the range helping to round up the cattle, I was in our pickup, driving along our fence lines checking for any break in the fences and repairing them....

  • Toy Trains: All Aboard!

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Nov 12, 2014

I know that the Thanksgiving turkey has not even been prepared yet, but we are forced to think of Christmas every time we go into a store or pick up papers or magazines. Thinking of Christmas makes me remember when every young child wanted to find a train set under the tree. I say that knowing that there were little girls that wanted a train set just a badly as the young boys. Many daddies were bitten by the bug also, and it was not uncommon to see a very extravagant train set up in a grandpa’s basement. The most well-known scale model train se...

  • The Dream Ends In Final Seconds

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Nov 12, 2014

What the Glasgow football team won was the heart of an invigorated Scottie Nation. What they lost was their first game of the season and a shot at the state Class B championship that many considered so possible. The Scotties ran into the Conrad Cowboys and a one-man destruction crews named Shane Larson, a running quarterback if there ever was one. The visiting No. 7 Cowboys upset the MaxPreps top-ranked Scotties, 32-27, on Saturday when Larson ran for his fourth touchdown of the day. Seven... Full story

  • Porkies Bow Out In Style

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Nov 12, 2014

The season ended for the Nashua Lady Porcupines last Friday at the Glasgow Scottie gym when they lost to the Bainville Bulldogs in the 2014 Volleyball Divisional Tournament. The Porcupines lost in the first round to the R&L Fusion in three very hard fought games. The match went to four games against Bainville. Even though they went out in two matches, the Nashua team played extremely well and in both matches. There were a lot of points that could have gone either way, but the wind was blowing...

  • I Remember Ed Boos; I Always Will

    Dean Johnson, For The Courier|Nov 12, 2014

I recently received a Glasgow Courier on my front step here in Gig Harbor, Wash., and was puzzled as to why I received it. I then remembered I went online a few weeks ago to look for an obit on an old neighbor and friend and I had to complete some information online to get a complimentary view. I was told this morning when I called The Courier to make sure I did not subscribe, that when someone signs up for the trial they are also sent a complimentary paper which I enjoyed reading. I then told...

  • Volleyball Scotties Please Coach In Defeat

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Nov 12, 2014

No. 4 tries harder. The Glasgow Scotties, the fourth and final team coming out of 2B in last week's Class B Northern Divisional Tournament, proved to be most competitive against eventual champion Choteau and then old rival Plentywood. The Scotties lost to both and were done, but they impressed their coach, Lori Dailey, in how they did it – with “heart and hustle.” The Scotties went down fighting. “We were proud of our determination in the Choteau match, not bowing to a very talented, very tall, very well-coached team that ended up winning...
