  • Meet The Valley County Candidates

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Oct 15, 2014

With absentee ballots out and over 250 votes already in, that last push for candidates to get their story out there is in full swing. The Glasgow Courier hopes to educate voters on who’s on our ballot in our local county, both contested and non-contested candidates. All county contested candidates were asked two questions: • What is your platform for this election? (This question is about your philosophy.) • What experience or qualities do you think you could bring into the position? The candidates were given approximates 150 to 175 words... Full story

  • Elementary School Taking Shape; GHS & East Side Nearly Complete

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Oct 15, 2014

School board members and a few school employees took a tour of the new elementary school construction before the school board meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 8. While there was obviously a long way to go in construction, the new building is taking shape and the vision is becoming a reality. Glasgow's School District Owner's Representative Eric Hulteng told the school board that East Side School and the high school were about 99 percent complete and only the few items on the "punch list" were getting...

  • Irle: The Great Debate

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Oct 15, 2014

Sometimes a namesake can have more sentimental value and meaning, other times it's about carrying history. The Glasgow school board discussed a possible decision on naming the new elementary school building at the school board meeting that took place on Wednesday, Oct. 8. What would seem like a simple decision, turned out to be more complicated. A survey was open to the public for about a week. The survey asked if the new school would remain Irle Elementary, be named Glasgow Elementary, or become West Side Elementary. The results surprised a...

  • Sage Grouse Conservation In Big Sky Country

Stephen Larsen, Center For Rural Affairs|Oct 15, 2014

Much of rural and small town Montana depends on the economic impact of recreation and tourism. Camping, hunting, fishing, birding, hiking, guiding and other activities in 11 Western states, including Montana, brought in $623 million in direct spending and $1.06 billion in indirect spending, according to a recent Western Values Project study (http://www.cfra.org/western-values-project-study). And nearby communities also benefit economically from the nearly 68 million visitors that spent time time on land administered by the Bureau of Land... Full story

  • Scotties Ranked No. 1 In State

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Oct 15, 2014

BY JIM ORR THE COURIER A turnover, bad break or penalty could end this amazing possibility in a flash, but here it is: If MaxPreps' top-ranked Montana Class B Scotties shut out visiting Plentywood on Friday, they'll have shut out all of Northern 2B for the season. First came Harlem. Then Malta and Wolf Point. None scored against the Big Dawg D. Now Plentywood, 0-5, gets its shot at 7-0 Glasgow. "I don't recall a season when this has happened," GHS coach Greg Liebelt told The Courier. At this... Full story

  • Glasgow Girls Dig The Football

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Oct 15, 2014

And the winner is ... The Glasgow Scotties girls fall sports teams. None of the girls were injured in Monday night's annual Powder Puff football game before a decent crowd at Scottie Field. "Lots of current fall athletes were on the field for both teams," GHS activities director Brenner Flaten, who walked the sidelines overseeing play, told The Courier. Doing battle with plenty of emotion and some hard hitting were two teams not on the Scottie fall sports schedule: the Booty and the Beast in...

  • Glasgow Volleyball Stays On Growth Path

    For The Courier|Oct 15, 2014

Last Thursday, the Scottie volleyball teams came home with solid wins at all three levels vs. the Wolf Point Wolves. In fact, all three Glasgow teams won in three games straight. More success came Saturday at Poplar. Tuesday proved to be more challenging as the varsity fell in four games at Malta, but there's an opportunity to bounce back tonight – Senior Night – against visiting Plentywood. Proud GHS coach Lori Dailey told The Courier that the statistics against Wolf Point show that many Scotties had good games, but what they don't cap...

  • 2014 Glasgow XC Charging Down To The Wire

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Oct 15, 2014

It's come down to this for hard-running Glasgow XC. The inaugural Plentywood invite debuts on Saturday. The state Class B cross country meet closes the season a week later on Oct. 25. The Scottie girls and boys continued their quest for Big Sky glory last weekend with a bunch of firsts and seconds in the invitational at Sidney Country Club. For the boys, the Scotties placed second and so did sophomore Gabe Hallock in 17:41, extending his recent string of fastest individual times for GHS. Dawson...

  • Youth-Only Deer Hunt This Week

    For the Courier|Oct 15, 2014

Montana's annual youth-only deer hunt is set for Friday and Saturday this week, Oct 16 and 17. The two-day special season is open to properly licensed youngsters ages 12 to 15 who've passed a hunter safety course. In addition, 11-year-olds who passed hunter safety may hunt if they'll be 12 by Jan. 16. The youth hunt is again scheduled during the two-day vacation for public schools in October. This puts youth rifle hunters in the field during the final days of Montana's archery season. Archers and young hunters need to be aware of the... Full story

  • Hodgepodge And Other 'Impertinent' Stuff

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Oct 15, 2014

Last week I ran away from home. I left 1,500 bales of hay in the fields waiting for Donna to pick them up. I cleaned out my fridge of all stuff that would perish in my absence. I packed eight shirts, eight pair of socks, eight pair of shorts, four pair of Wranglers, boots, shaving kit, cell phone plug-in thingie, two guitars and assorted other stuff and hit the open road. My first stop was in Sapphire Village to visit my Aunt Carol and Uncle Jim before they head south for the winter. Jim promised I wouldn't have to do any work. Sometimes the...

  • What Day Was That?

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Oct 15, 2014

Do you remember the original date of Columbus Day? I did ask several of my acquaintances on Monday if they remembered the date, but ended up checking it out on the Internet. I was right, it used to be celebrated on Oct. 12 for many, many years. Now it is another three-day holiday and not recognized by some due to racial prejudice. Some of us do remember from our history lessons that Columbus was actually Italian. And thinking of school history, I remember learning a poem about Columbus, but the only lines I can come up went something like...

  • Do You Stand Up Or Sit Silently?

    Bonnie Davidson, Bonnie & Box Of Chocolates|Oct 15, 2014

There seems to be so much focus on bullying these days. You see viral video posts of kids being beat up by kids, movies about kids being cyber bullied and constantly hear about bully prevention. It's seems to be some kind of new fad to stand up against bullies. So here's the question, do you stand up against bullies, or do you sit silently. It's always been my philosophy that communication is the world's biggest problem. I sometimes sit on the edge of my chair biting my tongue at meetings or in a room full of people because I so badly want to...

  • 'Look, Mom, That Lady Has Wheels'

Alice Wallem, Letter To The Editor|Oct 15, 2014

Dear Editor I'm not sure about the rest of the world, but in the area from Billings to Malta, there are lots of kind and thoughtful people. I am temporarily wheelchair bound. Family, friends and perfect strangers have been so helpful. People rush to open doors for me. One little boy in Billings said, “Look Mom, that lady has wheels.” I'm so pleased with all the kindness. But, myself, I have reverted to the 2-year-old whose favorite phrase is, “I can do it myself,” as she puts her shoe on the wrong foot. Haven't done that yet, but it's still e...
