  • Joe Horn, Candidate For County Commissioner

    Dane Osen, For the Courier|Sep 14, 2016

This week, I had the opportunity to sit down and talk with Joe Horn, one of the three candidates running for Valley County Commissioner, to discuss his experience and views on key issues facing the county. His main concern is taxes and if elected he said he wants to do what he can do to lower them. Joe Horn began his law enforcement career working as a deputy sheriff in Lee County, Iowa. While employed there, Horn bought and sold land and subdivided it. After leaving the Lee County Sheriff's... Full story

Radiologist Dr. Louis Bailey is a relatively new addition to the staff at FMDH. Having extra training in all types of MRIs, he specializes mostly in neuroradiology and musculoskeletal radiology. "Everything walks in through the door here. From mammograms, to broken legs, to brain tumors, I've seen all of those in the six weeks I've been here." Dr. Bailey began his education with an undergraduate degree from Southern Utah University. From there, he attended medical school at Kansas City Universit... Full story

  • Arm and Hammered

    Dane Osen, For the Courier|Sep 14, 2016

Alley's Palace hosted an open competition Sept. 10 for local arm benders to try their might against each other. In all, the tournament attracted 16 contestants, consisting of four women and 12 men. This was my first time attending such an event. Expecting something more comparable to the 80s Sylvester Stallone movie "Over The Top," I was pleasantly surprised that it was nothing like that at all. Sure, there were guys arm wrestling, but the super-macho guys with testosterone in hyper-drive were... Full story

  • Scotties Dawg Spartans to the End, Fall to Baker 36-22

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 14, 2016

The Scotties faced the Baker Spartans in a hard-hitting game of football Sept. 9, giving the second ranked team a run for their money. The Scotties struggled to find their footing in the first quarter of the game. Defensively, they failed to deny the Spartans, who scored two touchdowns and had one successful two-point conversion. Offensively, they were unable to make it to the end zone themselves, and the quarter ended with Baker on top 14-0. The Scotties found some momentum in the second... Full story

  • Lady Scotties Top Wolf Point and Harlem

    Lori Dailey, For the Courier|Sep 14, 2016

Two 2B matches kept the Scottie volleyball team very busy last week. On Sept. 8, they hosted rival Wolf Point in a four set match. They eventually won 26-24, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23, but it was a battle all night. Wolf Point came armed with size, strength and will-power that tested the Scotties on every play. GHS succeeded in outscoring them, but as the numbers indicate, this was no easy feat. Injury forced GHS to move their lineup around and shake things up a bit, but down the road this will serve... Full story

  • Remembering 9/11

    Ryan Zinke, Zeroing In|Sep 14, 2016

On September 11, 2001, the world changed forever when nineteen radical Islamic terrorists hijacked commercial jets and crashed them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania. These cowardly attacks killed 2,977 innocent civilians and hundreds of first responders. In the fifteen years since the attacks, nearly 5,000 troops have made the ultimate sacrifice defending our nation in the Global War on Terror. While America suffered a great loss and was pushed to her limits, we came out stronger as a nation – a nation whose... Full story

  • 'Dear Old Golden Rule Days'

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Sep 14, 2016

School is now back in session for all schools. Remember when school started after Labor Day? Most of us cannot go into detail about the week or days prior to that first day, especially when we were in the early years of school. I remember getting to sit down at the kitchen table with catalogs, Sears, Aldens and Montgomery Wards, going through pages of dresses, trying to make a choice. (Oh, yes, dresses only back then). Mom had a budget amount (dictated by my dad I am sure) that each of us girls could spend. That included any new under-clothes w... Full story

  • Responsibility

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just a Thought|Sep 14, 2016

I’ve heard people of all ages say “It’s not my fault” when something goes wrong. I heard it from my own children over the years and my answer was “Well, whose fault was it, then? Sorry but that doesn’t cut it with me. You need to accept the responsibility of your actions and its consequences.” Responsibility for one’s actions should and must begin at an early age. Even a 5-year-old knows what is wrong and right. They know they were the one who broke a vase or took a piece of candy or cookie when they were told not to. Taught properly, they... Full story

  • Get Out and Vote

    Corey Stapleton, Political Opinion|Sep 14, 2016

A couple weeks ago, the FBI reported that Arizona and Illinois’ election systems had been hacked. It could have just as easily been in Montana. Election security is a serious matter! As I campaign for Secretary of State across Montana, I am reminded of how important it is to balance our desire for larger voter participation with assuring the integrity of our voting process isn’t compromised by expediency or carelessness. If we have the mindset that it’s not a matter of “if” we get hacked, but “when” we get hacked, then we’ll be more vigilant a... Full story

Rooted Reflections Getting the Courier is always a time to reflect on my roots. I enjoy the feature writers, the lady from Nashua, Mrs. Honrud, and the lady from Saco. Vaupel borders on the surreal, but I know there are a number of subscribers who believe in his twisted stats, etc. I was born and raised in Valley County. Here in Arizona due to my wife’s ill health. -Carlo Porteen, Gold Canyon, Arizona Welcome to Nashua I just wanted to take this time to thank the Nashua community and all of Valley County and adjoining area for their great hospi... Full story
