  • Jon Voight Gets The Lay Of The Land

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Sep 10, 2014

Ties to Hollywood brought an actor and a director to the Glasgow area last week. Sightings of the famous actor were reported at several businesses, the airport and at a local hotel. The trip to Glasgow was short planned but got a lot of creative juices flowing for the actor Jon Voight and writer/director John Harrison. Harrison explained that about a month ago Voight gave him a call about a project idea that perhaps they might want to work on together. The two previously worked together on the...

  • Housing Efforts: More To Come

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Sep 10, 2014

By Bonnie Davidson The Courier If you asked anyone who has recently moved to Glasgow there would be no question or hesitation that housing is a problem in Glasgow. Nearly a dozen people attended a meeting in the city chambers at the Glasgow Civic Center to discuss the development of a housing plan, part of a $10,000 grant given to the city to help assess the need. The bid for the housing plan was given to the Greater Norther Development Corporation, a company that helps with grants, loans and...

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Sep 10, 2014

The homecoming show must go on. The Miles City Caledonian Society will fill in, but only so much, for the missing Saskatoon Police Pipes & Drums during Glasgow Scottie Homecoming Festival Weekend. The Miles City group has been secured to perform at three events, all on Friday: the 2:30 p.m. homecoming parade, the 6 p.m. tailgate party and halftime of the 7 p.m. homecoming game against Baker. The Saskatoon band backed out a couple of weeks ago, expressing concern that the ivory on their pipes...

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Sep 10, 2014

Jenifer Hanson of the Rain And Hail Crop Insurance Agency gave the presentation outlining the several options farmers have for filing damage claims with their insurance agencies. Farmers from Valley, Roosevelt and Daniels counties were in attendance. A few of them participated in the Q&A period, which followed Hanson's informative presentation. Main topics of the seminar...

    Sep 10, 2014

FOR THE COURIER Gov. Steve Bullock declared a disaster for areas in central and eastern Montana after severe storms and heavy rains hit the area from August 21 through August 24. This will allow Bullock to mobilize state resources and the Montana National Guard, as well as expend funds to meet the contingencies and needs that may arise from the emergency. “With the severity and intensity of the storms we saw last week and the damage that resulted, it is important that the state provide relief to those jurisdictions that need our a...

  • I Got Gas, You Got Gas

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Sep 10, 2014

I've done something I rarely do. I actually did some research on what I'm about to expound your way via this broadcast. Seems it takes about 16 million barrels of crude oil to run this country every day. That's for gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation gas, heating oil and similar products and the sludge, or left-over stuff for bio-plastics. Most of the crude oil we consume in the United States is purchased from several or more foreign countries that ... hate us ... love our money. Some folks think that a barrel of crude is the standard 55 gallon...

  • On The Road Again

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|Sep 10, 2014

Traveling is something I really enjoy. Several weeks ago, I accepted an invitation to accompany a friend to Iowa. A real plus was knowing I'd have the opportunity to visit with my brother as well as nieces and nephews and cousins. Getting to just ride along instead of doing the driving was a real treat. For a change I was able to really see the countryside. And it was fascinating. Not far into the journey, I saw water from recent rains surrounding large round bales and pooled in wheat fields. My heart went out to the farmers and ranchers for...

Gale Jellum, Letter To The Editor|Sep 10, 2014

Dear Editor: Throughout the fall season, the Montana Alzheimer's Association is sponsoring Walks to End Alzheimer's in various locations. The purpose of these walks is to raise awareness and funds for advancements in research, support and care for this dreaded brain disease. Of the worst dreaded diseases, Alzheimer's is the most costly as treatments and caregiving involves many family members, professionals, and facilities providing extended care. Friends and family of Karen Jellum, who passed away in October of 2013, have been very supportive...

  • Scotties Make Devils See Red

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Sep 10, 2014

It looks like the Scotties have a habit of experiencing a shaky start, then knowing how to get back on track. That was the pattern after Glasgow's second game of the season. The Scotties fought hard and won a come-from-behind victory over the home team Dawson County Red Devils, 29-14, on Sept. 5. The first quarter was all Glendive. Glasgow mustered only 12 yards of offense and fumbled twice 5 minutes into the game – the second of which Glendive easily converted to a touchdown, a 12-yard run b...

  • Under The Dam Triathlon Goes Over Well; 35 Participate

    Lih-An Yang, The Courier|Sep 10, 2014

It was a calm and beautiful sunny morning in Fort Peck. Yet, many adults and youth arrived with doubt. When it was over, they left as confident and inspired triathletes. The first annual Under The Dam Triathlon took place at 8 a.m. sharp on Sunday, Sept. 7. Twenty-five adults and 9 youth participants gathered at the first Dredge Cut. Air temperature was about 50 degrees, and the water looked cold. Trepidation was visible on many faces. There was Marj Markle with bum knees and a body that she...

  • Scottie Time Travelers Speed Up

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Sep 10, 2014

The Glasgow Scotties XC runners are cutting their times with passion. Coach K loves it. “We've just had a really good practice,” coach Rod Karst told The Courier on Tuesday. “They're practicing with as much intensity as I've had with a team.” At the Billings Invitational last Friday, six of eight Scottie boys ran faster over the 3 miles than they did at the Poplar invite the week earlier. Gabe Hallock was the big time cruncher, dropping 65 seconds from 19:00 to 17:55 to clock fastest for GHS. Morgan Guttenberg improved most among girls,...

  • High School Rodeo Sept. 20

    Sep 10, 2014

Youth from across Montana will come to Glasgow to compete in high school rodeo events at the Valley County fairgrounds at 9 a.m. Sept. 20 and 21. This rodeo will have a YRA and a junior high rodeo that run with it, and this year the high school rodeo will have a reining completion. In addition, if you are a youth up to age 9, a “peewee” or a 10-year-old to eighth-grade “junior,” you could enter this rodeo as a hometown rodeo without purchasing a YRA membership. The goal behind this is to get youth interested in the sport of rodeo. For more de...

  • Glasgow High School Band, 1936

    Sep 10, 2014

The Glasgow High School band in 1936 was directed by an H.J. Schiesser. At this time, the school was overflowing with students who came from all over the nation as their families found work at the construction of the Fort Peck Dam. A new building was constructed in 1915, but that building was overcrowded within 10 years of construction. As you can tell by this band picture, there wasn't a shortage of Scotties. Demolition of the school took place around 1983-1984....
