  • Survivors Take A Stand

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Jul 30, 2014

It was a bittersweet ceremony as the Northeast Montana Relay for Life began on Friday, July 25. The young, the old, the healthy and the sick gathered with one mission in common, to raise funds to fight cancer and to take a stand against something that impacts almost everyone. "It's dangerous and it can touch you, I don't care who you are," Ken Kautz said after lighting the torch of hope on Friday. Kautz explained to the crowd he was a colon cancer survivor, who spent 90 days in a hospital. He... Full story

  • Dennis Garsjo: Birthday Mastermind

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Jul 30, 2014

It's an unusual talent. Some may call him a "freak," and others have used him to perform party tricks. Many of the kids who have grown up poolside will remember him as a big supporter of the Glasgow swim team, and some might also have noticed his uncanny talent to remember people by their birthdays. Dennis Garsjo might not remember your first name, but he will most likely remember your birthday after the first time meeting him. Garsjo said that he usually only uses his talents for entertainment...

Bonnie Davidson and Janet Bailey, The Courier|Jul 30, 2014

The National Weather Service in Glasgow had a busy day last week as warnings were issued for a storm that ended up moving rapidly through Valley County. The weather service reported that it was a widespread storm that moved along the Hi-Line from Malta toward the northern parts of the county. Large trees were reported down in Glasgow, St. Marie and Opheim. Reports of hail were reported in Fort Peck and in the northern parts of Valley County. • Is There A Winner In Fort Peck Legal Case?

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Jul 30, 2014

A hearing was set for Thursday, July 31, but District Judge Blair Jones signed off on a motion for summary judgement, dismissing the plaintiff's claims without prejudice and awarding attorney's fees and costs to Jeffrey Robertson. While the battle might not be fully over, to this point it seems no one really won in this case that has lingered in Fort Peck for years. The case started in 2009, when Fort Peck Town Council began working on a lot development project for storage of campers, boats and other vehicles that were clogging up the streets....

  • Search Warrant Leads To Arrests

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Jul 30, 2014

The Drug Task Force and Valley County Sheriff's Office produced a search warrant for two local residents in Glasgow on Friday, July 25. That searched turned up several charges and arrests. Sheriff Glen Meier said he couldn't elaborate on details that led officers to the residence, but he said that the investigation would continue. While theft charges originally were listed, they were eventually dropped. A juvenile arrest was made after the search and he was charged with criminal distribution of drugs – felony; criminal mischief – felony; tam...

  • Redistribute The Tax Dollars

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Jul 30, 2014

Hinsdale, like many other small villages and towns throughout Montana, is in a pickle. The infamous Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warranted that the water being dumped into the Milk River from Hinsdale's sewage treatment facility is unfit to be dumped into the sanitary and sterile Milk River. The wastewater from sewage plants like Hinsdale's has been proven to be 10 times cleaner than the river it is being infused into. A person could drink the wastewater (if you didn't know from whence it came) without suffering any ill effects.... Full story

  • Friday Night's Heroes

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|Jul 30, 2014

I read a quote last week that said "Heroes are remembered, legends never die." Last Friday night I saw a lot of heroes. Some of them were bald, some had very short hair, some walked with canes but they were all heroes. They were the people who wore purple T-shirts with "I am Strength, I am hope, I am a survivor" printed on the back. They were cancer survivors walking the first two laps for Relay for Life. They walked with heads held high and grateful hearts and a quiet courage. An inner strength and strong determination to win their fight...

  • This Is Your Life

    Bonnie Davidson, Bonnie & Box Of Chocolates|Jul 30, 2014
    1

As the summer is slowly creeping up to a close, I say goodbye to my three step-children as they prepare for a new school year. It's one of the hardest things to be separated by time and distance. It seems that every time they leave I reflect on all the lessons we were able to teach them while they were here. I'm not talking about school lessons, although we did work on reading and vocabulary this summer. I'm talking about the important life lessons. As our oldest is coming up on his teen years I tried to spend a lot of time with him,...

  • Listo Pens

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Jul 30, 2014

Do you remember the Listo pen? I had to think to remember the name of these pens, but they were the forerunner to our current permanent marker pens, such as Sharpies. All of your canned goods on the grocery shelf had the price marked on the top with a Listo pen, or maybe they were just called “marking pencils.” This price marking method was not just used for groceries. I assume that one of the drawbacks to this method of price marking would have been the fact that the mark could be easily removed. Just rub it energetically and it was gone! The...

  • Reds Finish Third In District

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Jul 30, 2014

The Glasgow Reds had been virtually unbeatable the entire season. That trend continued in the first two games of the District Tournament in Sidney after securing the tournament's top spot. After a 23-4 victory over Miles City coupled with an 8-0 win against the Billings Cardinals, it appeared as if the Reds were preparing for an inevitable State Tournament berth in Lewistown. It was at that moment that the wheels came off of the vaunted Reds offense and the hopes to extend their season even... Full story

Experience reigned supreme for the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder swim team at the Divisional swim meet in Chinook this past weekend. They did not win the state championship, but the Hi-Line 13U baseball team certainly was the best of the east this season. Taking third place behind Glacier (the eventual champion) and Kalispell, the Hi-Line 13U team's season came to an end, while the top two finishers advance onto the Regionals in Helena this weekend. The Hi-Line 13U was composed of 10 players from Glasgow and three from Nashua, Wolf Point and Scobey. They competed with teams from Havre, Lewistown, Miles City, Belgrade,...

JoLynn's grandparents are Floyd and Deanna Nelson, of Glasgow, who ranch with Donald and Sheila Nelson. JoLynn had the opportunity to help on the ranch during her childhood – that's what sparked her interest in horses. Her great-grandma, Bertha, was the Tampico Boys 4-H leader, and as a result, JoLynn participated i...

  • Glasgow 12U Sees Season End

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|Jul 30, 2014

The Glasgow 12U baseball team played in the Pacific Northwest Regionals in Kalispell late last week and although the outcome wasn’t one fans had hoped for, the team left the community proud nonetheless. Glasgow won its lone game against Kalispell by a score of 5-3, but even their three losses, head coach Mike Nieskens felt that his team continued to play hard and refused to back down to their opponents regardless of the final scores. “I’m really proud of the kids,” Nieskens said. “I never saw them give up in these games. Just being in that a...
