  • Local Stock Hands Join Wagon Train to Pryor

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Jul 27, 2016

Mary Abrahmson, stock hand at the Glasgow Stockyards and resident of Wolf Point, set out this past weekend on an old fashioned wagon train. Abrahamson accompanied by friends Hannah Ferguson and Troy Melum met up with Bridger native Duncan Vezain in Bridger, MT to set off on the trail over the Prior Mountains through the "prior gap" and down into the town of Prior, MT. The total expedition aincluded 40 to 45 other riders and 5 covered wagons. "There were people from all over the world. Some from...

  • Driving into Glasgow

    James Walling, The Courier|Jul 27, 2016

Emerson Drive lead singer Brad Mates spoke to the Courier in anticipation of the Canadian band's appearance with JT Hodges at the 2016 Northeast Montana Fair on July 29. “I've never been to Glasgow,” Mates explained via phone from the road, “but we've been fortunate to travel to every state and province in Canada and the U.S.” In other words, the award-winning country artists will be uniquely primed to form a first impression of the area. Considering his upbringing in Grande Prairie, Alberta, I'm sure he'll find a lot to like. Emerson Drive i...

  • Fire Drill Suspended for Actual Fire in St. Marie

    Dane Osen, For the Courier|Jul 27, 2016

Originally, the plan was to meet with the guys from the St. Marie Fire Department on the afternoon of July 24. I was going to watch them drill and shoot the breeze about a few of them getting their Emergency Medical Technician certifications and some of the challenges they face as a rural fire department in a small community. By July 23, the plan changed dramatically after our firefighters were called to tackle a structure fire by Rose Hill. Typically, this would be a call that Long Run would...

  • Every Single Person

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just a Thought|Jul 27, 2016

Lately I’ve been seeing and hearing articles about lives that matter - police lives, black lives, road workers’ lives, medical responder lives - even a picture of a small girl with “My Life Matters” written on her hand. Why does it suddenly seem necessary to say people’s lives in this group or that group matter? Don’t all lives matter? Absolutely. There should not be any distinction about whose lives matter. What does matter is how we are living our lives. Taking care of our families, giving everyone respect, not judging others, helping peo...

  • Slop The Hogs

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Jul 27, 2016

Last week my memories concerned the marketing of pigs, at least to some extent. Do you remember when almost all farmers and ranchers had a small bunch of pigs on their places? Most rural housewives had a slop pail sitting somewhere near the kitchen area. You all remember the term “slop the hogs” and that is exactly what the slop pail was for. All edible scraps went into the slop bucket, things like potato and other vegetable peels and trims, as well as fruit spoils, etc. This was truly the days when nothing went to waste. If you couldn’t eat it...

  • Midwifery & Chocolates

    Helen Depuydt, Saco Stories|Jul 27, 2016

Walking into our tiny living room before Christmas had become an annual event for this older couple. They always had a gift in hand, which they presented to Mama, and then they relaxed to chat awhile. The pleasant-looking pair were no strangers to me; I saw them in church every Sunday. But bringing an annual gift to Mama seemed to have special significance. Living during the Great Depression meant making do with only the necessities of life – and that certainly did not include boxed chocolates. Even as a child, I knew that! Only years later d...

  • The Urination Syndrome

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks for Listening|Jul 27, 2016

Here’s the plan. I want every one of the 3.14159265 true conservative males over the age of 18, staunch supporter of HRC and who actually reads this nonsense column to take out your wallet and extract 25 percent of its wealth. Now go directly to the bathroom and flush this money right down that John C. Crapper invention called the twalette in polite circles. I want you to repeat this process every time you get a paycheck from now on until the guys in the white coats come to take you away. I call this the Urination Syndrome. It was initially inv...

  • Semantics Matters

    James Walling|Jul 27, 2016

Since the estimable Sandy Laumeyer and Pastor John Collins have expressed eloquent viewpoints on the subject of various lives mattering this week, I thought I’d wade in to clarify some of the language involved and discuss the basic semantics related to Black Lives Matter. The award-winning Laumeyer makes the point here that all lives do indeed matter, a notion I take as utterly sincere, guileless and kind. St. Marie’s popular pastor walked all the way into Glasgow on Monday carrying a sign signaling, among other things, solidarity with law enf...

  • Thunder Lands in "B" Division for State Meet

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 27, 2016

The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team finished their eighth weekend of competition July 23 and 24 in Malta, where the divisional swim meet was held. With 370 swimmers from ten veteran teams, the competition was tough. Swimmers must place in the top 12 of their events just to qualify for state competition. That's not an easy task, and not all swimmers make it past divisionals. The Thunder was represented by just more than half of their rostered team, with 32 swimmers competing at the two-day meet. Of tho...

  • Reds' Season Comes to an End at District Tournament

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 27, 2016

It was a tough "building" year for the 2016 Reds', and their season came to a disappointing end at the district tournament in Billings after just two games. The first game for the Reds was held Thursday afternoon, July 21, with Glasgow facing the Sidney Patriots on the diamond. Sidney claimed the lead in the second inning, scoring four runs on a two-run error. The Patriots never let go of the lead and dominated the entire contest offensively with seven batters combining for 18 hits, 17 RBIs, and...
