  • Why It Takes A Crisis To Trigger Funding For Montana's Largest Irrigation Project

Montana Free Press Tom Lutey, For the Courier|Jul 24, 2024

The rivets were still popping from the seams of the St. Mary siphon when Jennifer Patrick started crunching the numbers for repairing the century-old system that 18,000 residents of Montana’s Hi-Line depend on for water. It would take 3,600 feet of pipe — two-thirds of a mile of pipe so big men can walk through it without bumping their heads — to get water flowing again to a 200-mile stretch of the Milk River Irrigation Project. They would need a new steel bridge across the St. Mary River and enough earth-moving equipment to restore a river...

  • Summer Doldrums

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Jul 24, 2024

I’ll confess to being in a slight state of the doldrums. What does that mean? According to the Oxford Languages, it is “a state or period of inactivity, stagnation, or depression.” If you go to NOAA, it’s a nautical term for the equatorial belt where the winds don’t blow and so sailing ships get “stuck.” Merriam Webster says the meaning is “a spell of listlessness or despondency.” I’m at the stage of inactivity or listlessness, at least as far as it pertains to getting a column written! I’m sure, if you regularly read my scribblings, you’ve n...
