The Hinsdale School District held a special election on July 12 asking voters to pass a Hinsdale Building Reserve fund for the high school in the amount of $805,975 and to pass an Elementary Building Reserve Fund in the amount of $332,561. These funds were asked of the voters so the district could replace the 1968 school boiler and the high school ventilation system. The elementary ventilation system also needs to be replaced however, at this time, federal and local funds are being used for that project. The Hinsdale voters passed the high...

Twelve U.S. Senators, including Montana’s Jon Tester (D) and Steve Daines (R) released a statement at the end of June vowing not to approve any members to the Asset and Infrastructure Review (AIR) Commission that was set to consider recommendations to changes to VA health care facilities. • Cleaning Up The Town

    Michelle Bigelbach, The Courier|Jul 20, 2022

Since taking over as Glasgow’s code compliance officer position at the end of last year, Rod Dees has had one goal in mind: cleaning up the town. With the increase of abandoned buildings and junk vehicles in public view, in addition to weedy lots now that we are in peak summer season, Dees has been busy trying to achieve that goal. Though there are city ordinances for abandoned/public nuisance building structures and properties as well as city codes for nuisance weeds and abandoned/discarded vehicles, it does take time for property owners to c...

  • Downtown Glasgow Fire

    Gwen Cornwell, For the Courier|Jul 20, 2022

Remembering a major fire in downtown Glasgow maybe about 1952. I was just an elementary student in the North side school in Glasgow. I do remember the disaster, down to the fire hoses in the street while the fire was being fought. I am sure that there are many residents that remember the day that so many businesses were lost. Businesses that were located on 2nd Ave. or Main St., as many thought of the street. A couple of those remain in my mind—Hall Drug and the Roxy theatre ---but there were others, some rebuilt and others not. The old S...

  • Slow Starts

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Jul 20, 2022

As others have noted on the Gardening in NE MT Facebook page, things have been slow in starting as far as the garden goes. We did have a long, cool spring. Very few of my corn seeds came up. Even the replanting was a bust, so I guess I’ll be buying corn later on. The peas are spotty, but are starting to bloom just as the heat hits (peas really don’t like hot weather). I think only one packet of my beans came, and since all the packets “melted” in the rains, I’m not sure which variety I’ll have! (I really should make a garden map each summer...

  • Doomscrolling: Feed Me Bad News

    Richard Noble, For the Courier|Jul 20, 2022

The ability to capture and hold people’s attention is a valuable asset. Captivating a room, enthralling an audience, or convincing you that one more episode is worth the tradeoff for a ruined sleep schedule. Every silver lining has a cloud of course, and when that captivation relates to the endless stream of negativity available online, we end up suffering the affects of the newly coined “doomscrolling.” Bad news is in no short supply, but how do we avoid getting addicted to it? Has the internet fed our feelings of hopelessness to the point...
