    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Jun 15, 2016

An explosion of currently unknown origin demolished and burned a northwestern Glasgow home Friday, June 10, at 6:22 a.m. badly injuring the occupant and completely destroying the home. According to Brandon Brunelle, Glasgow's Fire Chief, "There was an explosion followed by the house being totally engulfed in flames." He added that crews from the Glasgow City Fire and Valley County Long Run fire departments responded with a total of three engines and 13 volunteer firefighters. The flames were...

  • Scouts Get a Lesson in Mining

    Patti Scanlan, For The Courier|Jun 15, 2016

If it can't be grown, it must be mined. These words were repeated several times to Venture Crew 2861 and Boy Scout Troop 861 this past weekend as they traveled to Butte to earn their Mining in Society merit badge. This merit badge was released in 2014 and was developed so that Boy Scouts across the United States would be exposed to the mining industry, learn why mining is important to our society and the everyday things that they use and depend on. The scouts met Assistant Professor Chris Roos...

Valley County Search & Rescue assisted in the removal of Willenborg’s vehicle, a white pickup truck, from the Missouri River near Boy Scout Park, where it was discovered submerged by a local boater on June 12. • Valley County Primary Roundup

    Parker Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 15, 2016

Montana’s election primary was held last week on June 7. For the Democrats, Valley County voted 344-337 for Hillary Clinton, while Bernie Sanders won at the state level. On the Republican side of things, Donald J. Trump took landslide victories at the county and state levels, with 496 county residents opting either for one of Trump’s opponents or “no preference.” For Montana governor, incumbent Steve Bullock took the Democratic nomination while Montana entrepreneur and political newcomer Greg Gianforte took the Republican vote. Republi...

  • Miss Montana: Competition of Character and Uniqueness

    Parker Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 15, 2016

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Miss Montana Pageant in Glendive. Before going, I thought it would merely be formal event with contestants having little ability to express themselves. I found out otherwise. The 11 contestants all brought something different and unique to the pageant, which made it entertaining to attend. Naturally, I came to show my own personal support for Abbi Helland, of Glasgow. Not only was I covering the event, she is also a friend. Each contestant... Full story

  • Time is Life

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just a Thought|Jun 15, 2016

Time. Minutes, hours, days, weeks. Some days time goes far faster than I can and other days seem to drag on forever. We look forward to vacations, milestones in our lives, events we want to attend. In fact, we at times spend so much time looking forward we forget about the moment we are in. We get so busy that we let things slide by us unnoticed. People plan out their time. Some have their entire day scheduled minute by minute. And if something should interrupt that schedule, they tend to get upset. Schedules do have a place, but none of them...

  • Ain't No Such Thing As Just A Few

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Jun 15, 2016

Don’t pay the ransom! Through nearly inhuman cunning and deceitful deception, I have eluded my captors and have returned to my disheveled home intact. There were jars scattered around the county with “Help Save Virgil” labels printed on them. Some, about 70 percent to 15 percent my way, read “Please keep Virgil.” But they were mostly set up by my own relatives and some disgruntled cribbage opponents. Anyway, here’s a thought. Think about it for just a minute and most of the “thinking” people who peruse Thanks For Listening will tell you there...

  • Four Awards, Five Cousins

    James Walling, Editors Notes|Jun 15, 2016

It was a good weekend in Whitefish for the Courier and an even better one for visiting dearly-missed relatives on both sides of the state for me. In the former category, Sean R. Heavey hefted three awards at the 2016 Montana Newspaper Association convention for Best News Photo (first place), Best Feature Photo (first) and Best Lifestyles Photo (third), while I carried away first place for Best Editorial. There were publications with more awards to collect (get over yourselves, Flathead Beacon), but our little broadsheet was warmly received and...

  • From Bells and Squeeze Horns to GPS

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Jun 15, 2016

The picture of the automobile featured on “Yesterday’s Memories” in the last issue of the Courier elicited a few comments from a couple of readers, which in return jogged some of my own memories. I definitely do not remember when automobiles featured carbide lights as headlights, but I do remember hearing about them when I was a kid at home. For those of us that have never seen them or used them, you might compare them to a kerosene lamp. Can you imagine the amount of light that was generated as you headed down the trail on a dark night? I real...

  • The Midnight Rider

    Helen DePuydt|Jun 15, 2016

The husky homesteader astride his horse realized he would need to pull in for the night. A prairie snowstorm was developing. Snow was coming down fast and furious – stinging the man’s weathered face deep in the sheepskin collar. As anyone familiar with horses realizes, a good horse will keep his bearings and return his rider home in good shape. With the dropping temperatures, the man decided that to continue on was too risky for man or beast. A building was barely visible, but no matter, these were the days when the welcome mat was out 24 hou...

  • Thunder Places Fourth in Scobey

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 15, 2016

The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder swim team competed in their second meet of the season June 10 and 11, traveling to Scobey for two days of racing. The team was represented by considerably more swimmers than at the previous meet held in Harlem, and the Thunder earned fourth place overall. Last summer, Scobey hosted their first meet since building their new pool, and a new pool record was set for each event. This weekend, many of those records were broken, but a few still stand and wait to be... Full story

  • Foundation "ParTEE" Golf Tournament

Mary Kate Tihista, For The Courier|Jun 15, 2016

The rain stopped just in time for the 18th Annual Open Golf Tournament on June 12. The teams came out to support a great cause and great community, even with 1.5 inches of rain on the course. Each of the 18 teams registered, had breakfast and were all ready to tee off by 9 a.m. Every hole featured a different game for everyone, with the winner taking home wonderful prizes donated by local businesses. The games were designed so that both experienced and inexperienced golfers had chances to win. The marshmallow game, sponsored by the Foundation,...

  • MRM Event Attracts Mud Boggers

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 15, 2016

The sand drags and mud bogs held at the Valley County Fairgrounds this past weekend drew a respectable number of drivers and spectators. The Sunday mud bogs was the most popular event, with nearly 300 spectators on hand to watch the competitors try to make their way through several feet of muck and mire. In addition to local drivers, some of the 20 entrants came from Billings, Plentywood, Raymond, Crane, Great Falls, and as far as Conrad to compete in the races. Curt Stordahl of Conrad made the trip worth his while, finishing second in the...
