  • Letter Sheds Light on Kolstad's Departure from GHS Basketball

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 25, 2016

News of the recent termination of Jon Kolstad's contract as Glasgow High School's head girls basketball coach left unanswered questions. Efforts by interested parties to clarify the termination with school board trustees were initially unsuccessful. Some answers eventually came to light with a letter sent to GHS from the Montana High School Association (MHSA) on April 27, 2016. At the regular school board meeting held May 11, Superintendent Bob Connors shared the content of said letter with the trustees and attendees present. Connors explained... Full story

  • Pioneer Museum Sets Stage for 1915 Glasgow

    A.J. Etherington, For The Courier|May 25, 2016

The Pioneer Museum of Valley County recently launched a sizable expansion adding over 5000 square feet to the museum in brand new exhibit space. The new annex seeks to recreate Glasgow's Main Street, circa 1915; a "hot time" in Glasgow's history according to Dave Pippin, former Valley County commissioner and current chair of the Valley County Museum Board. Pippin stated, "We chose 1915 because this was a time when Glasgow really took off in terms of expansion and settlement." The exhibit is... Full story

  • School Board Update

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 25, 2016

The Glasgow School Board held both their organizational meeting and their regular meeting May 11 at the central office, with 13 people in attendance. The organizational meeting was held first with Mona Amundson elected as chairperson and Alison Molvig elected as vice-chair. During the meeting, trustee Suzanne Billingsley recommended the school district get more information out to the public closer to the distribution of absentee ballots since that is where the higher number of votes came from in the most recent school election. Moving on to the...

  • Reader Letters Prompt Questions for Burns

    James Walling, The Courier|May 25, 2016

The race for Montana House of Representatives District 33 has been heating up in recent weeks. As the primary voting deadline approaches, Courier readers have been asking questions about a bulk mailer sent out district-wide by candidate Michael Burns on May 4. The mailer, which is split into two sections, makes contentious claims about Burns' Republican opponent, Malta's Casey Knudsen, and his stances on various issues. To clear the air of rumor and speculation, we've taken your concerns straight to the source for further clarification. The...

  • Scotties Give Divisional Meet the Old One-Two

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 25, 2016

The show must go on. Despite a day-long rain and an hour-and-a-half weather intermission, the Northern B Divisional Track Meet slowly, but surely, moved forward and the participants forged ahead. Early Saturday afternoon, everything came to a screeching halt with a flash of lightning, a crack of thunder and a torrent of rain. Spectators and competitors quickly made their way to safety indoors or took refuge in nearby school cruisers. Facing at least a 30-minute wait before the meet could...

  • Scottie Softball On To State with Second-Place Finish at Divisionals

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 25, 2016

Another spring sport fell victim to the weather when the Eastern B/C softball tournament was cut short on Saturday. The Scottie girls were playing their fifth game of the tournament against Columbus when a spring storm hit with wind, rain and hail. The game was called in the fourth inning, and the tournament was cancelled. The Scotties faced Colstrip in their first game of the weekend and came away with the win after Tiana Johnson hit an RBI double in the eighth inning. Glasgow gained an early lead with seven runs in the first two innings, but...

  • Attack Ads in Northeast Montana

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|May 25, 2016

I guess some of my liberal opposers will be saying “you’re a fine one to talk about attacking someone in print” and I suppose you’d be a little bit right but this kind of politikkin’ is something more better suited to Texas or Colorado. What I’m yakkin’ about is the mailer young Michael Burns sent out asking for support as he attempts to become our HD33 representative in Helena. The very first thing that struck me as odd was the picture on the flyer of Casey Knudsen. The original shows Casey with long hair, baseball cap on backwards and...

  • Graduation

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just a Thought|May 25, 2016

Graduation, a time of joy, laughter, tears. An exciting time yet a bittersweet one. Graduates are seeing the culmination of 13 years of their lives. They’ve sat in classrooms, done homework, participated in activities such as band and sports. And throughout those 13 years have made friends -- perhaps lost a few -- and increased their knowledge. They’ve been congratulated, hugged, told how proud their families and friends are of them. Now it’s time for them to move forward. To follow their own path. They’ve most likely all decided where they ar... Full story

  • What the Transgender Law Really Means

    Tess Fahlgren, Truth Nukem|May 25, 2016

At this point most people have heard of the so-called “bathroom bill” passed in North Carolina. This is a law decreeing all people must use restrooms in accordance to the gender they were born into. What the public doesn’t seem to realize is that the North Carolina General Assembly spent $42,000 to hold an emergency, closed meeting to rush through this bill that not only rules that trans people have to use the restroom assigned to their original anatomy, it also prohibited any laws passed that would illegalize discrimination of any sort again... Full story

  • More on Millennials

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|May 25, 2016

I had been trying to come up with a “Remember” for several days now, but had drawn a blank. Then I remembered reading Parker’s article, "Grumbling About Millennials." I would like all of the millennials out there, who just might read this section, to know that grumbling about the young generation is nothing new. You all have instant communication and the Baby Boomers had only a “party” line to do their venting on. Remember when all the young girls wore their pants so tight that you thought they were a second skin? Or the fact that women wor...
