  • Last Call

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 14, 2014

The paint is nearly gone, the wood is rotting and the structure still stands, unable to tell the story behind it. The narrow and long building has served as storage over the past several decades. It was moved around 50 miles about 50 years ago and found it's last destination. The building is now ready to be demolished, as it no longer serves a purpose. The Stonebergs live out on a ranch off the Anderson Trail, along Larb Creek. While Rose Stoneberg couldn't quite place when the building was... Full story

  • Growth Near For Pioneer Museum

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 14, 2014

History is an important part of the present and the future. By looking back we not only can learn from the mistakes of others, but we can also learn where we came from. The Pioneer Museum of Valley County has worked tirelessly over many years to preserve the local history. A generous gift that came to the museum from the estate of Lee Niedringhaus a few years ago has allowed the museum to expand. He left $400,000 to the museum in his passing. Mary Helland said that he held a lot of respect for the local museum and had even presented history a...

  • Highway Getting Wider Between Nashua, Fort Peck

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 14, 2014

Residents from Nashua to Fort Peck might have received a knock in the door recently. This is because workers from the state Department of Transportation are preparing for a project that's been in planning for nearly a decade – in their front yard. Shane Mintz, administrator of the Glendive District of DOT, explained that the project is in the acquisition and appraisal stage. They are buying land from owners along the Highway 117 to help widen and straighten out the road next summer. The c...

  • Granger: Above & Beyond The Call Of Duty

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 14, 2014

Sometimes the best employees are the ones who pay attention to the smaller details and go just a little above their job description. Those employees often leave lasting impressions on the employers and on the business. A local Glasgow resident and hard worker was recognized for all her efforts. Kathy Granger took the administrative assistant position in 2010. In her four years at the Glasgow Police Department, she’s made a pretty big impression. Police Chief Bruce Barstad sent a letter to the MTLEIRA (Montana Law Enforcement Information Records...

  • Use Of Food Stamps Rises In Valley County

Emily Guerin and Tim Marema, For The Courier|May 14, 2014

The use of food stamps in Valley County increased during the recession, assisting families in stretching their food dollars, contributing to local spending and helping spark a national debate about the future of the federal nutrition program. The proportion of Valley County residents receiving food stamps hit 12 percent in 2011, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Services. That’s an increase of 1.2 percentage points since 2007, the year the recession started. Valley County’s food-stamp usage rate is low...

  • All Of This Should Be On '60 Minutes'

    Pat Kelly, My Opinion|May 14, 2014

In response to your article “County Discusses St. Marie Bankruptcy” (May 7, Page 1A), the properties in question are not Pat Kelly’s, but St. Marie Development Corporation of Mt. (SMDC), a corporation that was formed for the creditors of Terry Parks’ bankruptcy. At the time of Terry Parks’ bankruptcy, people rightfully said that the stock had no value as there was no market for the properties. SMDC under Marv Bethea sold the few marketable properties of SMDC for ridiculously low prices. The 120 storage units, which Bethea currently owns, net... Full story

  • The Bison Meeting That Wasn't

    Sierra Dawn Stoneberg-Holt, My Opinion|May 14, 2014

Maybe you heard. Montana Fish, Wildlife, and Parks (FWP) was planning a bison discussion meeting for April 15 and 16. The meeting was cancelled late Saturday, April 12. Personally, I found out less than 24 hours before I was set to leave for the gathering. So what does this cancellation mean in the ongoing discussion of whether or not the right to self determination applies to Eastern Montanans? I just can’t tell. Make no mistake. Simply having the discussion is a huge improvement. Under the past administration, the approach was: There is no s...

  • At Your Graduation Best

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|May 14, 2014

It is graduation time. Do you remember your high school graduation? The pomp and ceremony of it all. The gals planned their attire for several months, or at least weeks. Graduation announcements were ordered from a firm that usually made a sales appearance at the school. Very little individualism with those announcements, no online or Photoshop. The entire class had the same announcement to send out. Graduation was a time for your best. Did you even think of decorating the top of your cap, or wearing tennis shoes or flip flops? Did we have a dr...

  • It's Seeding Time

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|May 14, 2014

It's seeding time. Farmers are putting in long days preparing their fields and then seeding wheat, barley, oats, legumes and more. As I watch sea gulls hovering above the newly seeded ground, it takes me back to my first spring on the farm. When my husband told me it was time to get ready to seed the crops, I had no clue as to how involved I'd be in something I knew nothing about. After asking many questions, I learned the wheat had to be cleaned and treated. Since I didn't yet have my Montana driver's license, I didn't have to drive the truck...

  • A Teacher's First-Year Students Graduate

    Larraine Eiland, Guest Column|May 14, 2014

Congratulations Class of 2014! Graduation holds a special meaning for me this year. In 2007, I accepted a 7th grade teaching position at GHS. I was a little skeptical because I desired to teach younger students. The position was for an overflow teacher, which meant I did not have my own classroom and I taught math, science and social studies. I began the year with ideas and procedures to make my teaching fun and effective. It was quite difficult to coordinate all the little things that need to come together to make a classroom a fun learning...

  • Milk River Special Olympians to Compete In Billings

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|May 14, 2014

While the weather would have held out for the short torch run for the state Special Olympics, scheduling conflicts prevented the ceremony. This week the top 10 from the Milk River Activity Center will travel to Billings to compete in the Special Olympics. The team competed in the area competition in Miles City earlier this year and they all came back with medals. Jennifer Franzen took home medals in bowling, walking and throwing. She said she enjoyed districts and was fairly excited to head to... Full story

  • Scotties Fine Tuning

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|May 14, 2014

Weather once again played the villain as the scheduled track and field meet in Miles City was rained out. That forced the hand of the Glasgow coaches to organize an impromptu meet on Monday to get their athletes one last warm up before the District 2B meet which will be held this Saturday at Glasgow High School. "This is a meet where we're still trying to see some things from our athletes," said Glasgow head coach John Labonty. "It's kind of a thrown together type of meet." There are quite a...

    Quinn Robinson, The Courier|May 14, 2014

It's been a solid two weeks of performances for the Nashua Track and Field team as they approach the 3C meet this week. On May 3, the Porcupines traveled to Glasgow to compete in the Jean Dreikosen Memorial Track Meet hosted by Hinsdale. The Porcupines saw solid performances all around from their athletes at the meet. Faith Keys finished third in the shot put and fifth in the discus. Sandy Viste and Ryleigh Delich finished fifth and sixth in the shot put respectively. Runner Zoe Glasoe had a nice performance as she came in fourth place in the...

Parents of the Hi-Line Babe Ruth League players were treated to the opening-weekend Early Bird Tournament in Scobey this past Sunday.
