  • Roads Collapse In Two Corners Of County

    Samar Fay, Courier Editor|May 1, 2013

The Road Department was kept running from one end of Valley County to the other this weekend, repairing potentially dangerous damage to two roads. A Glentana resident reported Friday night that the Glentana Road (Highway 438) just south of Glentana was rapidly washing away around a culvert. He said the road was very soft. Snow lying deep in the coulees in the north part of the county was melting in the warmer weather and pouring from the head of Spring Coulee, said road superintendent Wayne Waar...

  • He Walks The Line

    Samar Fay, Courier Editor|May 1, 2013

A CBS producer and writer has come from the Big Apple to the Big Sky to ask Valley County people about the effect the Keystone XL oil pipeline might have on this area, if it receives presidential approval. Craig Wilson is a Canadian from Medicine Hat, Alberta, who has forged an award-winning career with CBS News in New York City, but he goes home with his children every summer and follows Canadian-American news stories for CBS. Wilson arrived in Glasgow Tuesday and said he plans to talk with...

  • Mayor Carney Faces A Battle

    Samar Fay, Courier Editor|May 1, 2013

A line had formed at the Clerk and Recorder’s office before it opened on Monday. Becky Erickson said she got there at 20 minutes to eight to be the first person to file for the Glasgow mayor’s race. Erickson has served on the Glasgow City Council for 18 years, as well as on the boards of many local and state organizations. She was soon joined in line by Melanie Sorensen, a city councilman who had decided not to run for re-election in Ward 3, the south side, but changed her mind when Erickson announced her candidacy for mayor. Sorensen has bee...

    Mona Amundson|May 1, 2013

I am retired from the State of Montana Department of Labor & Industry, where I was the manager of the...

    1. Describe your background: family, education, occupation, community service, involvement with local schools. I have lived and raised my family here in Glasgow for more than 45 years. I graduated from GHS in 1972. We were the first class that had the opportunity to go to all three years at the “New High School.” I attended college at the University of Montana and Eastern. I served in the Navy as part of the Seabee Construction Battalion squad. After the Navy, I worked for Pacific Steel in Hav...

  • City-County Planning Board To Be Dissolved

    Samar Fay, Courier Editor|May 1, 2013

The Valley County commissioners voted Tuesday to publish a notice of their intent to dissolve the defunct City-County Planning Board. It is a housekeeping measure to clear the old joint board off the books since the city of Glasgow has informed the county of their desire to form a new city planning board. Valley County has its own planning board. The old joint board has not met since around 2003, according to Commissioner Dave Pippin. The old City-County Planning Board was formed by a county resolution in January 1959, after the city notified...

  • Must Be Love When Manure Work Is A Labor Of Love

    Slim Randles, Home Country|May 1, 2013

Emily’s dilemma was obvious: how do you sell manure? Since she fell in love with Dewey Decker, she could think of nothing less than spending her life with him and embracing the fertilizer business whole hog, so to speak. Emily Stickles has never done anything halfway. In her job with the county, she has kept a vigilant eye on almost every business around, encouraged where she could, and crushing hard if she needed to stomp on violators. But Dewey’s business, scooping up cow manure and redistributing it to gardens all over the county, was a lab...

  • The Middle

    Monica Lindeen, Montana State Auditor|May 1, 2013

Here's to working together. Here's to the slow, arduous pursuit of compromise. Here's to the overlooked, underappreciated, unglamorous middle ground. These days, we hear so much from the fringes that it's easy to forget that progress is possible. When Montana's legislature met in 2011, one fringe ran the show, refusing to budge and leaving the people of Montana in a lurch. Moderates, compromise, and middle ground were scarce around the halls of the Capitol. Instead, we got a heaping helping of grandstanding and chest-pounding, but no progress....

  • Let's Get To Work

    Max Baucus, U.S. Senator|May 1, 2013

Serving you is the greatest privilege of my life. Over the past 40 years, I’ve had one goal: make life better for the people of this state. You don’t become longest serving Senator in Montana without a lot of help from a lot of people. I am grateful for the opportunity you have given me. When I asked my hero Mike Mansfield whether I should run for U.S. Senate, he told me it would take: a lot of hard work, a lot of shoe leather, and a bit of luck. In the next year and a half, instead of on campaigning, I want to spend all my hard work, shoe lea...

  • Car Talk

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|May 1, 2013

Do you remember the slogan, “See the USA in a Chevrolet?” I think this might have been from about 1957. The advertising always featured a cool red and white Chevy convertible. (Yes, like Smiley’s pride and joy). Then there was the era of running boards. How many friends could ride on the running boards of your car? And the cool continental style. That was when you could really tell the difference between the cars – Chevys, Oldsmobiles, Fords, Pontiacs, etc. Now I find it much easier to just read the make of the vehicle on the vehicle itself....

  • Softball Wraps Up Conference

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 1, 2013

On April 18, Scottie softball had not played a single game in conference. Eight days later, they had swept their seven counterparts in the Eastern B Division and earned the top seed in the divisional tournament. They started with a four-game sweep of Colstrip, Stillwater, Huntley Project and Shepherd on April 19 and 20, and then tore through Cut Bank, Shelby and Conrad at the Conrad Invitational for the final three conference games of the season. For good measure, the Scottie girls then dispatch...

  • Driving Home

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 1, 2013

A patented Tiger Woods fist pump finished Luke Gunderson’s day at the windy but sunny and warm Sunnyside Golf Course on Saturday. Standing over a long putt to finish off a team-low round, Gunderson knew that sinking the putt would help take the sting out of a bad start to his day, a four-putt on the first hole of his round. He only needed one putt this time to end his day with an 86, good enough for fourth overall and best on his team to lead the Scotties to the top team score. “We had a goo...

  • Lady Tracksters Continue Roll

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 1, 2013

The Scottie girl tracksters are looking like a runaway favorite for divisionals. The Glasgow girls have won three meets in a row, their most recent a 128-point affair over nine other teams, including four Class A squads, in Glendive on Friday and Saturday. “Right now, our distance kids are doing really well and our hurdlers are doing really well,” said Head Coach John LaBonty. It was the distance runs and the hurdles that carried the Scottie girls to the top spot in Glendive, accumulating 70...

  • Scottie Boys' Track Still Experimenting

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 1, 2013

With the district tournament coming quickly, the Scotties are still searching for the right mixture. The Scotties were able to place fourth in Glendive on Friday and Saturday, beating out Class A’s Sidney and Hardin and seven other schools, but falling short of Glendive, Miles City and Culbertson. That’s the second-straight meet the Scotties have finished in the top four. And it’s also the second-straight meet that personal records fell in bunches – 16 PRs were broken by the Scotties in Glendiv...

  • Porcupines Play Host In Wolf Point

    J. Levi Burnfin, Courier Sports|May 1, 2013

As Nashua hosted their meet in Wolf Point, it was a Lady Raider who stole the show. Staying true to Hinsdale’s moniker, Bethany Lacock raided the Porcupine Invitational for 40 individual points, the meet high, carrying the Lady Raiders to a sixth-place finish on Saturday, the best of any Valley County girls’ squad. Lacock scored four golds, taking the top spot in the 300-meter hurdles, pole vault, high jump and triple jump. Lacock finished in 52.7 seconds in the hurdles, vaulted 7- 0 in the pole...
