    A.J. Etherington, The Cou|Apr 29, 2020

After weeks of social distancing guidelines, stay-at-home orders, quarantines and business, bar and restaurant closures, Montana Governor Steve Bullock announced on April 14 that the state will begin a phased reopening of the economy. It's a move that has delighted and frightened many at the same time but comes as Montana experiences some of the lowest COVID-19 infection rates in the country. Montana also has experienced few deaths, especially when compared to neighboring midwestern and northwes...

Residents with P.O. boxes however did not receive the invitation as they were part of the Census’ update/leave operation, which was placed on hold as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, l...

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Apr 29, 2020

Two Rivers Economic Growth's fourth annual Community Clean Up Day was held April 22, and locals took advantage of the chance to get out of their homes to beautify the area. "We had more participation this year than we did last year, which is wonderful and I'm not sure if it was because of the nice weather or quarantine or possibly both," laughed Executive Director Keegan Morehouse. She said TREG had 30 people sign up and take advantage of the clean up supplies provided at the office. The organiz...

  • Knudsen Closes Access To Veterans' Park

    Apr 29, 2020

Dear Editor, In the April 2, 2020, Community News (a Roosevelt County publication) Austin Knudsen, one of the two Republican candidates for Attorney General, gave some advice on dealing with the COVID-19 crisis and boiled it down to one thing: "Basically, be a decent neighbor." Good perspective, but we wish he would take his own advice. You see, Austin Knudsen and his family, KLFP (Knudsen Limited Family Partnership) have not been decent neighbors when it comes to his and their own hometown and...

  • Advocating For Fort Peck and Eastern Montana

    Apr 29, 2020

Dear Editor, Since the spillway at Fort Peck graced the first cover of Life Magazine, Fort Peck Dam and lake have been the crown jewel of Northeast Montana. Most of us that have been around the area a "few" years had friends and relatives that worked on the dam in the 1930s. The original authorization of the project was for flood control, navigation and jobs. The over 10,000 workers, needed to build Fort Peck Dam, were happy to have work in the new boom towns. In later years, hydropower,...

  • A Responsible Path To Reopening

Governor Steve Bullock, Governor Of Montana|Apr 29, 2020

Over the past several weeks, Montanans have faced unprecedented challenges. Our way of life has changed rapidly. Like every corner of our country, our once thriving economy is ailing. We’ve lost family members and friends. As we have aggressively managed the virus over the past five weeks, we have bought time for our health care workers to prepare and respond, we have protected those most vulnerable to illness from this disease particularly in our nursing homes, and we have been able to increase our testing capacity and secure additional person...

  • The Art Of Ironing

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Apr 29, 2020

When I DO get an article to the Courier it is written on a Monday. Being a senior citizen, and set in my ways, this is also my laundry day. Tuesdays are not necessarily my day for ironing, however I do still think that I need to iron my pillowcases and dish towels. Yes, many of my friends and family think that I am sick, but my roots make me do it! It seems that was one of the signs women used to look for to tell if their neighbor was a good housewife. Oh, and there was a knack to hanging your clothes on the clothesline also. Back to...

  • Tidying Up

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Apr 29, 2020

For years I have ignored Dennis' many farming magazines and newsletters. I have separated the pages of the newsprint ones to use the sheets to line the garbage cans and for washing windows. Newsprint is wonderful for cleaning glass, leaving a lint- and streak-free finish. Of course, they leave your hands black, but hands are very washable. Just use lots of soap and a soft-bristle nail brush (and/or soak in bleach or lemon water, depending on which smell you want left behind), then use lots of lo...

    Gwendolyne Honrud, The Courier|Apr 29, 2020

Perhaps one aspect of life Americans have been missing most during the sweep of the coronavirus across the country and the resulting shelter in place orders has been sports. Athletics, professional and amateur, play a defining role in American life, and the sport most closely associated with all things American is baseball. And now, with Governor Steve Bullock instituting a phased reopening of the state, baseball may be the sport that will fill everyone's sports void. Students, fans and coaches...
