The supposed day of unluck came and went and nothing extraordinary happened for a local family. Saturday, March 14, came and the family went on with their normal daily activities. Becky Holter was at home taking a nap on the couch, while the rest of her family, Curt, Mariah and Roland, were all out at different places. When Becky got up from the couch and headed to the kitchen she saw the smoke coming from the window. She said she quickly went to the door where the water heater was and opened... Full story
While we're home of the Glasgow Scotties, you won't be finding a lot of Scots in the area. What you will find is plenty of Norwegian names and heritage in the area. Some families came to homestead, others found their way here with plenty of family ties close by. This week a Norwegian representative, family member and women's rights enthusiast made a stop in Glasgow. Gerd Louise Myhre Molvig came to visit family after a few weeks traveling other areas in the United States. She spent about a week...
"We've served thousands of children, between 3,000 to 6,000 a year, from all over," said Stacey Fast, the director of the Northeastern Montana Children's Museum. After switching locations and struggling to come up with ideas, funding, volunteers and board members over a decade, the museum will be opening up for an open house and grand opening of the World Wildlife Exhibit that has taken Skip Erickson years to put together. With most of it finished but details still left to wrap up, the exhibit w...

Valley County Commissioners meet for discussion and decision every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. The public is always invited to attend. During the month of February they had several items on the agenda. Here are a few highlights. They discussed the possibility of hiring another part time nurse for the Valley County Health Department. Commissioner Bruce Peterson wanted to wait before approving more hours and wanted to make sure they weren't adding costs to the budget. Commissioner Paul Tweten agreed that they could gather more information before...
The Bakken Oil boom is the largest oil boom that Western North Dakota and Eastern Montana has ever experienced. The Bakken spreads across nearly 200,000 square miles (Shaw, Sawicki, 2012). The oil boom’s high wages attract people from all over the United States to North Dakota from poor economies hoping to get a piece of the Bakken. Williston, N.D., has gone from 12,000 residents in 2009 to over 25,000 in 2012 and it expected to climb to nearly 60,000 people in a few years (per Shaw, Sawicki report, 2012). Not only has the population i... Full story
This column from executive director Edwin Bender of the National Institute on Money in State Politics was released as part of Sunshine Week, a national initiative to promote dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information. Participants include news media, civic groups, libraries, nonprofits, schools and others interested in the public’s right to know. The Glasgow Courier supports Sunshine Week, March 15 to 21. Transparency in our elections, our government, and our democracy doesn’t just happen. It’s hard work. It ta...
Shoe repair shops? Not many of us remember when it was common to have a shoe repair shop located on one of the main streets of your community. I have been told there were a total of four located in Glasgow. I am going out on the limb to say I am pretty sure that was four at the same time. Pretty hard to believe, when no one other than the occasional cowboy gets repairs done anymore. I can vaguely remember getting shoe repairs done. Maybe an occasional buckle sewed back on or a new heel. There was a shoe repair shop located under the present...
Transmittal (halftime) has come and gone, and now today (March 16) is the 54th day of the session. The House bills are coming over in droves to the Senate. The BIG discussions will be the Medicaid expansion or various plans, and the budget. The House is taking up the budget (HB2) this week. The budget will be the last act of the Legislature before we sine die (adjourn). I am drafting a major infrastructure bill, and we will be hearing this in the next upcoming days. It still is in rough draft and we are meeting with Democrats and Republicans...
Ruth (Erickson) Bauer, 94, of Williston, N.D., died peacefully at her home on Monday, March 9, 2015. She was born on Dec. 15, 1920, to Emile and Inga (Christenson) Erickson on their family homestead about 7 miles south of Grenora, N.D. She attended local country schools for eight years in both North Dakota and Montana. The family farm was located right on the border of the two states. When the country school closed in North Dakota, she went to school down the road in Montana. In 1939, she...
Some of the young blood over at the Valley Event Center rink has been going prime time lately. The Glasgow Ice Dawg Bantams took their turn at the Montana Amateur Hockey Association Bantam B State Tournament in Havre last weekend, going 2-1-1 to place second after coming in with a 4-11-1 record. Two weeks earlier, the Pee Wee Dawgs began their state tourney with a 6-10 record and left with the championship trophy after going 5-0. "We came up a little bit short, but these kids played awesome,"... Full story
Year 17 is shaping up like a real diaper dandy for hundreds of young players at this weekend's Jeff Jurgens Memorial Basketball Tournament. The 84 teams, including nine from Regina, Sask., exceed last year's total of about 80 and will compete at five Glasgow venues. With eight members per team, that's 672 players and maybe another 1,500 folks and volunteers here for a little roundball in G-Town. “I'd like to see somebody do an economic impact study on the tournament and what it brings in to our community,” organizer Tom Schmitt told The Cou...
Six Scotties basketball players have been selected to 2014-15 all-conference teams and three of them to the Class B All-State Team. For the girls, it's good news that their two honorees, junior Abbi Kolstad and sophomore Leinie Hughes, return next year as important cogs in the maturing team's nucleus. For the boys, the honors cap off a memorable run at GHS for four graduating seniors: Chase Fossum, Jason Thibault, Keil Krumweide and Jake Page. This photo is taken at the train depot on "registration day" that was to take place at the county courthouse in 1913. Homesteaders flocked from all over towards "free land." The land came with strings attached. The Courier covered a large story of registration and drawing names of 1.6 million acres of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation for homesteading. The proclamation was signed in August 1913. Homesteaders had to apply between Sept. 1-20. The drawing was held in Glasgow and many people crowed... Full story
