The March 7 Glasgow City Council meeting saw discussion of employee longevity pay, approval of a vacation extension for Joe Horn (GPD), updates on the proposed Valley Court Apartment acquisition, renovations on the T-33 airplane at the Pioneer Museum, committee and department head reports and other council business. A council tour of the Glasgow Fire Department was tentatively scheduled for March 21 following the regular council meeting. At the March 9 meeting of the Valley County Commissioners, outgoing Valley County Attorney Nick Murnion’s r...
During two separate House Natural Resources Committee hearings recently, Department of Interior Secretary Sally Jewell and Bureau of Land Management Director Neil Kornze admitted to Montana Congressman Ryan Zinke that they knew nothing about the potential change-in-use permit for free-range bison that could impact up to three million acres in Montana. Director Kornze thanked Zinke for “educating” him on the issue. On March 1, after Rep. Zinke explained the issue to Secretary Jewell, she claimed knowing nothing about the three-million acre pro...
The Valley County Health Department will be holding its first Red Thumb Reminder Day in the Glasgow High School Cafeteria Thursday, March 17. Health department staff and students will be painting thumbnails red and distributing red thumb bands as a reminder to not text and drive, as well as educating attendees on the subject. VCHD says sending or receiving a text takes a driver's eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds, the equivalent at 55mph of driving the length of an entire...
Republican Michael Burns is relatively new to Glasgow. Having grown up in Texas, the 27-year-old candidate for House District 33 migrated northward to be near his parents, who have resided here in town since 2011. The candidate sat down with the Courier recently over a plate of wings at the Cottonwood to discuss his personal history, road to politics, and life on the Hi-Line as an conductor for BNSF. After graduating with a degree in pre-law from University of North Texas in Denton, Burns...
The Hinsdale FFA Chapter is restoring the Milk River bank near the community of Hinsdale. They are funded by the "Living to Serve: Environmental Grant," a grant that helps FFA chapters implement service-learning projects in their community. The south side of the Milk River bank toward the east side of the town is experiencing soil bank erosion due to the high water flooding events that have been taking place since 2010. The erosion is threatening several homes, and is most extreme in areas that...
Nay-sayers of the baseball program in Glasgow usually say things like: “It costs too much,” “It takes up the entire summer,” “My kids should focus on school sports or a summer job.” In my opinion, all of these drawbacks take a back burner. My experience as a player in the program has been the best experience of my life so far. In a community the size of Glasgow, it is very unusual to have a baseball program of this caliber. With multiple teams in each age division, almost no town in the area can match it. It is all made possible by volunteers,...
The water crisis in Flint, Mich., has been extensively covered by most, if not all, major news networks. All three of Montana’s main newspapers have covered the topic, Time ran a cover story, and the New York Times did a feature piece. In short, the bulk of the facts are public knowledge. But, when subjected to the onslaught of information, it can be hard to keep everything straight. Jacoby Collins, 21, is a Flint native who has lived in Glasgow for the last five years. We discussed the Flint water crisis at length, and his frustration with t...
Spring is right around the corner, it seems. The calendar says the equinox will occur on the twentieth, as it does every year, and for once, up here in northeastern Montana, we have hopes that it actually will mean spring has sprung. We’ve been seeing the signs of spring: a killdeer has been heard; robins are hopping in the yard; skunks have been seen trundling alongside the highways (or have been smelled); the redpolls are frequenting the bird feeders again; and a gopher has been spotted sunning himself beside the road. The snow has mostly m...
Enough pollyticks for awhile. I have a true story in the trucking vein I thought you might enjoy. The sequence of events happened back in the day about 1972 or so. You must forgive me if some of the facts aren’t. There are two different styles of semi trucks: conventional and cab-over. The conventional (long-nose) is the most popular because they have a far smoother ride that do the COEs. (Trucking manufacturers’ jargon for “Cabin-Over-Engine,” thus “cab-over.”) Before the 1970s most of the long haul trucks were conventionals but a new trucking...
If you’ve been wondering why you’ve not seen my column in past weeks, it’s because my husband and I took a trip to Sun City, Ariz., to spend several weeks with his brother. We went on several day trips out through the desert. I thoroughly enjoyed attending a concert that was a tribute to the Carpenters. And I attended an art show, where I left owning a painting of pansies that had caught my fancy. Eating out at so many different places was fun, as were the evenings we played cards or just worked on assembling a jigsaw puzzle. On the flight home...

The Glasgow Wrestling Club took over half of their stacked roster to Great Falls this past weekend for the AAU State Wrestling Tournament. That translates into the fifth largest team at the event for the second year in a row. With 66 teams in attendance, it would seem quite a task for a class B team to make their mark. It would not be a problem for the Highlanders, however, as they placed ninth ... behind only seven class AA teams and Havre. Setting a new club record, 40 percent of the...
With the 2015-2016 basketball season at an end, the All-State and All-Conference selection for the District 2B girls have been released. With a fantastic season behind them, three Scotties earned their honors. Senior Abbi Kolstad has been named to the All-State team, along with senior Brooke LaValdo, Harlem as well as senior Hailey Nicholson and junior Sophia Stiles – both from Malta. According to the Glasgow Scotties Facebook page, “Kolstad joins only Erin Archambeault, Kami Malnaa, and Tanya Bergren as two-time Class B Girls Basketball All-St...
The Glasgow Ice Dawgs High School team finished their hockey season with a third place finish at the MAHA State Tournament in Miles City this past weekend. This would be the first of two games against the Generals in the tournament. Glasgow was...
