  • Lady Panthers Roar

    Virgil Vaupel, Courier Correspondent|Mar 11, 2015

The 2015 Class C Girls State Basketball Tournament is in the books. Eight teams from the four corners of this very large state converged at the Adams Center, Dahlberg Arena on the campus of the University of Montana under the 'M' for a thre- day tournament to see who would take home the heavy hardware. The favorite was the Belt Lady Huskies because they had won the Class C trophy the last three years and folks thought a four-peat was in the cards. Most folks, that is, except the girls from... Full story

  • Human Trafficking: It's Real, Here

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Mar 11, 2015

Imagine a life where there's no control. Think about living in a life that you never planned, think about being stuck in that life. The girl that appeared in a hazy blur in Lisa Ling's show, “This is Life,” sitting on a couch and explaining how she ended up in the sex trade in Williston, said that she never imagined her life going that direction. She explained that she was just fresh out of high school. Her response to what brought you to North Dakota quickly ended with a response, “a boy.... Full story

  • Scotties Have That Spring In Their Step

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Mar 11, 2015

'S' words are in season at 1 Scottie Pride Drive. Spring. Scotties. Sports. Startup. The GHS track and field, softball and golf teams opened their spring sports practices Monday. The golfers teed off at 3:45 p.m. at El Cor Del Lanes. Softball players reported at 6 at GHS. And the tracksters, under first-year head coach Tim Phillips, gathered at 3:45, hit the track for some drills and took to Scottie Pride Drive to run the hills. "I'm just excited for the opportunity," Phillips told The Courier....

  • G-Town Runs Out Of Luck

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Mar 11, 2015

Lucky. Several times this season, Scotties coach Norm Braaten told The Courier that his team, or any team, needed to be lucky to get to the state tournament. Not just hard-working. Not just talented. You need to be healthy. The ball needs to bounce your way. Your shots have to fall. The Scotties suffered the wrong kind of luck at the Northern B Divisional Tournament at Shelby, losing two of its three games. The season is over for this squad that entered the tournament 20-1, was ranked No. 2 in...

  • More Fort Peck Campsites In The Works

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Mar 11, 2015

A petition may have made a difference as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers looks to add an additional 20 campsites to the Fort Peck area. The petition with over 1,000 signatures was supported by Two Rivers Economic Growth, Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, Missouri River Country Tourism Board and the Tourism Business Improvement District. The organizations contacted Daren McMurry and Michele Fromdahl to discuss the issue over the last year. Walleyes Unlimited also supported the project...

  • The Doctors Are In

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Mar 11, 2015

It was kind of a two for one special for the local Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital in Glasgow. They attracted a new couple to Glasgow all the way from Sitka, Alaska. While the couple has been married since 2007, they might look at each other a little like newly weds. They started their first couple days of getting situated late last week, their first official day at work was Monday this week. Dr. Donna Smith will be working at FMDH as an obstetrician and gynecologist (OBGYN), while her husband...

  • Pipeline Workforce Camps In Focus

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Mar 11, 2015

This is the second of two articles in The Courier regarding concerns about the proposed Valley County Keystone XL pipeline workforce camps.TransCanada officials visited recently and participated in a public hearing where the plans were discussed. A landowner only a few hundred feet from the Hinsdale camp stated that he had concerns with the landowner keeping a trailer park at the location in the future. He also had concerns with the road conditions and traffic, perhaps someone out enjoying the mud and tearing up the dirt roads. Alan Lietz, the...

  • Please Help With The Tires

    David Reinhardt, Political Opinion|Mar 11, 2015

Old tires and landfills are a poor combination. Tires that are mixed into the landfill site act just like balloons coming up through the debris, so, the landfill attempts to keep them separate. Because of the space issues in the landfill, grinding tires or baling them is preferred to burying them. Currently the Valley County Landfill is charging dealers to dispose of their old tires. The landfill board attempts to recover these costs without being so expensive that people take their tires home and then throw them in the borrow pit (causing... Full story

  • In Search Of: The Talc Mine

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Mar 11, 2015

Once again I am searching for information. I have had several readers ask me about a talc mine located in the North Country, which I assume could be anywhere from Baylor to the Canadian Border, maybe from Richland to Thoeny. This is an unknown to me. I know of coal mines that were used by many for winter heat, but I have never heard of anyone mining talc. I am not even sure just what form it would take or type of country/soil where it might be found. If any readers of this column have any knowledge of this I would be delighted to have you give...

  • Don't Give Big Oil A Free Ride

    Cindy Webber, Political Opinion|Mar 11, 2015

The oil and gas industry is a boom and bust venture. Companies get in as quickly as possible, extract as much of the resource as possible, make millions of dollars, and then get out just as quickly, leaving behind a mess of abandoned wells, frack water storage areas, torn up farmland, depleted and unusable water, crumpled roads and a local economy in tatters. Unlike neighboring North Dakota, Montana gives oil and gas companies a holiday on paying taxes on the first 12 to 18 months of production from a new well, regardless of how high oil...

  • Flood of April, 1907

    Mar 11, 2015

With spring on the way, flooding season comes around the Valley County area. Glasgow and the surrounding commmunities are no stranger to floods as history has recorded several such events over more than 100 years. This photo was taken in April 1907 and is a view of 3rd Avenue South and 6th Street South. While it's clear the town wasn't nearly as developed as it is today, they were probably grateful for the wooden walkways.... Full story
