  • Marj Markle Makes Scottie History

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Feb 19, 2020

For Marj Markle, basketball started at a young age among her competitive siblings. She remembered playing ball in the driveway of their home on the Glasgow Air Force Base almost every night. As the middle child of six-stuck smack in between four brothers and the youngest of only two girls-Markle remembered learning to play tough early on. That grit and competitiveness would lead to a lifetime of athletic achievements, putting her name in the Montana High School Association Hall of Fame this...

    Feb 19, 2020

Dear Editor, We would like to congratulate the two new Speech & Drama State Champions – Hurrah!!! Also, we have enjoyed reading all the articles and have been impressed with the coverage that Speech & Drama has received this year. But we do want to make one correction. In the article on Miss Griffin, it stated that she and Mr. Wright were the first state champions since Sydney Hayward in 2011. Sydney was the last Speech state champion but there were two drama champions. In 2012, Danielle B...

  • Montana's Elk Hunting Traditions Worth Preserving

    Feb 19, 2020

Dear Editor, For decades Montana has been the envy of hunters who pursue elk. Our state has healthy elk herds because of our incredible habitat on public and private lands. We enjoy the longest season in the West – with a six-week archery season and a five-week rifle season. No other state comes even close. With our strong elk herds comes challenges in their management. Landowners at times struggle with the damage that large groups of elk can cause to crops, haystacks and fences. Montana F...

  • Disrupted Plans

    Mary Honrud, For the Courier|Feb 19, 2020

We had planned to head to the Outpost Cafe in Opheim on Valentine’s Day for their steak and shrimp special. Mother Nature intervened, disrupting our plans with a short but intense snowstorm. Our home is only about 50 yards from the highway, but in the midst of this mini-blizzard that highway disappeared into a wall of white. We’ve been caught out on the roads after dark in blizzards before. It’s not an experience we care to repeat, so we stayed home. I found a package of rib steaks in the freezer. The defrost cycle on the microwave was emplo...

  • Scotties Achieve Alchemy - Turn Silver Into Gold

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Feb 19, 2020

You would have been forgiven if you had worried about the Scotties' chances at the State Tournament in Billings on Feb. 14 and 15. A tough season with a number of challenges, illnesses, injuries, a second-place finish to Huntley Project at Divisionals and a series of peaks and valleys at State had set the tone at the close of business Friday at Metra Park. That tone was short-lived however, and on Saturday morning the Scotties rallied to go undefeated in their first seven matches of the second...

The starting line-up for the game included all five Scottie seniors-Kobe Sibley, Alec Boland, Tim Wageman, Saul Hansen and Jayson Turner. Unfortunately, the festivities of senior night were short-lived after the Wolves finished out the first quarter ahead by three-13 to 16. That lead would have been more than manageable, but in the second half the Scottie boys slipped even...
