  • The 100 Club

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Feb 4, 2015

Students at Irle Elementary got a vision of the past when it came to the good old school days. While they celebrated 100 days of school this year, a special guest was invited who is celebrating 100 years of life. Charlotte Wigness visited a few classrooms and students were able to ask a few questions. In Kathy Bell's first grade classroom she spoke a little bit on Friday, Jan. 30, about some differences in school from back in her day. She said in the first grade class that not many people owned... Full story

  • Wagon Man Makes It To Pre-Super Bowl

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Feb 4, 2015

Not one to circle the wagons to have a jamboree in his honor, Marlen Halverson was excited in the last week to be a part of something pretty big. He's known in the area as the "wagon man," and in Arizona where he weathers out the winter he's known as "Montana." Halverson said that he had some excitement before one of the biggest televised events in history took place not far from his winter retreat. One of his wagons, a prairie schooner, made it into the Dan Patrick Show. This particular wagon h...

  • School Looking Good, But Faces Snag

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Feb 4, 2015

The last Glasgow School District Board meeting held a lot of updates about the elementary school construction taking shape. Viewing from the outside, those passing by might notice a roof, walls and windows are all in place. They won't be able to see the daily progress on the inside, but that progress is happening rapidly. The project remains on time and on task at this point, but it was clear there were still some challenges ahead. Glasgow School District Owner's Representative Eric Hulteng repo...

  • Partridge, Erickson Toast Of the Town

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Feb 4, 2015

There was goofy dancing, shouting competitions and a lot of jazz, rock and roll, and country shaking the Elks Lodge on Saturday, Jan. 31. With a slight change in tune, the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce brought in some professional dueling pianists to ring in the new year, new board and president. It was a huge success. Executive Director Lisa Olk said it was one of the most well attended chamber awards banquet in at least a decade. Around 300 people showed up for a little entertainment and drinks. The gavel was passed as the 2014 Chamber...

  • Big Changes At Valley View Home

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Feb 4, 2015

Over two decades with only small changes led to a much bigger change taking place locally. Valley View Home saw a little shakeup in September when Health Management Services stepped in to help turn things around for the full time care facility. Administrator Kandi Svenningson explained that the building had been running on a budget and with some policies that hadn't changed in around 20 years. She explained that Medicaid cuts and a freeze that didn't help pay the full costs to cover each resident. The board met and discussed different ways to...

  • Keystone XL Gains Senate Approval

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Feb 4, 2015

It was a hurdle finally jumped on Thursday, Jan. 29. The U.S. Senate finally passed the Keystone XL Pipeline bill with enough votes to overcome a veto. The final count was 62-36 and Sen. Jon Tester did vote in favor of the pipeline in the end. With amendments added to the bill it will have to travel back to the House and get final approval. The House passed the bill earlier in January, but there weren't enough votes to overcome a veto. A total of 67 votes will be needed to override a presidential veto. A press secretary from the White House...

  • How Far Have They Come?

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Feb 4, 2015

The Eastern B-C Divisional awaits on Saturday in Shepherd. It's the ultimate measuring stick so far to see how far the reinvigorated Scottie mat program has come this season. The Scotsmen measured up well last weekend at the Malta Invitational. They placed third among the 14 teams, as high as they could have expected. Class A power Havre placed first with 299.5 points and Choteau, the top-ranked Class B team, was second at 175. GHS and Cut Bank were next, tied at 103. Rising Scottie freshman... Full story

  • City With A View

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Feb 4, 2015
    1

Some days my mind is just so filled with the present that I forget about the past. However, today I spent some time looking at the painting of Glasgow, 1914, that is located in the lobby of the courthouse. What really interested me were the buildings that remain standing to this day. I could pick out the spire of the Evangelical Church in the background and of course the cool building on the corner across from the present day Farm Credit Services. (Cool, when you think of those lovely green... Full story

  • My Grandparents, The Immigrants

    Sandy Laumeyer, Just A Thought|Feb 4, 2015

For quite a long time now immigration has been a hot topic in our nation. There are so many facets to this it is extremely difficult to address all of them. In reading article after article concerning immigration, I was reminded of all four of my grandparents who were immigrants. My mother's parents arrived here from Croatia. My father's parents were married when they took the long journey to become American citizens. Grandpa was from Prussia and Grandma was from Germany. What drove my grandparents to leave where they were born and take on the...

  • Freedom Of Speech...Unless

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Feb 4, 2015

As I sit here reading through the amendments to the U.S. Constitution one thing jumps out at me in the First Amendment. Here's how it reads: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press. The conundrum here is that I don't see where it is written “unless the speech or the press offends someone.” Seems anymore our freedom of speech has deteriorated from its original purpose. Maybe that's one reason our communication skills have dete...

  • Getting Back In The Game In Helena

    John Brenden--Montana State Senator, The Brenden Report|Feb 4, 2015

Hello again from the capital. Now that the Super Bowl is over (much to the dismay of the Seahawk fans), we can get back to business here in Helena. My SB 88 passed the Senate 48-0, and that is the bill that gives the conservation districts the same and equal bidding rights that the cities, towns and counties were granted last session in my SB 77. It will go to the House, and I would think it will pass there as well. We are very fortunate to have in the Senate this year retired District Judge Swandal. His SB90 to revise penalties and eliminate j...

  • FWP And Problematic Wildlife

    Chuck Denowh, My Opinion|Feb 4, 2015

The last few decades in Montana have seen a remarkable recovery in wildlife populations. For example, Montana’s elk population was down to almost 20,000 animals in 1940. By 1970 it had increased somewhat to 55,000. But after that we’ve seen rapid growth to nearly 160,000 animals today. That’s simply an astounding recovery. And other species, like deer and antelope, are at or near all-time highs. The restoration of Montana wildlife is due to a number of factors, but the predominant reason is the efforts of landowners. A great deal of the credi...

    Jim Orr, The Courier|Feb 4, 2015

Scottie S&D did the Nation proud at State – with some flair.
