  • Rising From The Ashes

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Jan 14, 2015

Like a nightmare that just doesn't shake off, tragedy strikes and the natural response is to wonder why. One local family faced a tragedy that faced national attention just over a year ago today. The Chalmers lost Sheree Chalmers Smith to a plane crash, along with her husband, Daniel Smith, her sister-in-law, Amber Smith, Amber's fiance Jonathan Norton and her father-in-law, Dale Smith. The plane went down in Idaho, in the rugged terrain located near McCall in what is known at the Frank Church R... Full story

  • Keystone XL Pipeline: The Saga Continues

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Jan 14, 2015

Will the hand of power slap it down again? That's the question that many might be wondering in the upcoming weeks, as the Keystone XL Pipeline bill made its way through the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee last week. Sen. Steve Daines spoke at a hearing about the pipeline bringing jobs and tax revenue that could help support infrastructure in Eastern Montana. In November representatives passed the bill, but it failed by one vote in the Senate. As Republicans have taken control of th...

  • For Now, Sage Grouse Not Endangered

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Jan 14, 2015

Legislators slipped in a provision through the federal budget bill in December that may, or may not, affect the sage grouse. Just one sentence prohibited the Department of Interior from changing the classification of the sage grouse. That's good news for farmers, ranchers and those with active oil pumps in Eastern Montana. Although it might not impact the overall decision that is eventually made, it prohibits this for up to a year. Valley County would encounter a direct impact if the bird were listed as endangered. Local ranchers and farmers...

Michael Wright, Community News Service--UM School Of Journalism|Jan 14, 2015

The 2015 Montana Legislature convened Jan. 5, and ceremonial and educational events welcomed the 150 lawmakers from all over the state to Helena. During the swearing-in ceremonies, the leaders of each party said they hoped the parties would work together to better the state. “I look around this room and see 50 individuals dedicated to making Montana a better place,” said new Senate President Debby Barrett, R-Dillon. Barrett is the first woman elected Senate president, and she spoke about increasing the power of the legislative branch. “It...

  • 2014: The Year That Was In Local News

    Bonnie Davidson, The Courier|Jan 14, 2015

July • While the flood of 2011 is still a topic of conversation, necessary repair work at Fort Peck Dam is ongoing. Even though several repair projects have been completed, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers continues work on the Fort Peck spillway. Consequently the 2011 discharge caused a lot of erosion. The spillway ran for over four months. Downstream dams along the Missouri River are also undergoing flood repairs. The projects, costing around $45 million, are coming closer to completion. • Wh...

  • Ethanol Is Not A Dirty Word

    Shirley Ball, My Opinion|Jan 14, 2015

I recently heard radio advertisements promoting “no ethanol in our gas.” I wonder if the sponsors of the advertisements understand the implications of that message? I realize that not everyone understands the nuances of that message, so I would like to share my thoughts. What does “no ethanol” in our gas really mean? First, consumers should understand that gasoline is made from many petrochemical components produced during the refining of crude oil into gasoline. Some of these compounds are are added to increase octane. They include toxic chemi... Full story

  • Neither Rain, Nor Snow, Nor Gloom Of Night

    Jan 14, 2015

The Glasgow Courier shares the views expressed in this column with other publications in Stevenson-Hicks Newspapers. As predicted, the closure of scores of mail processing plants and rural post offices has waged a heavy toll on postal customers. Mail service has rapidly declined, especially in small towns across the United States. The U.S. Postal Service recently announced the elimination of overnight delivery as well as a one-day delay in first-class and periodicals mail. While Congress mandated that Saturday delivery continue through at...

  • Gay Marriage & The Media

    Virgil Vaupel, Thanks For Listening|Jan 14, 2015

One of Montana's major daily newspapers scored yet another hit with the gay and lesbian community with another article about gay marriage in Montana. What is that now? The fourth or fifth time since Montana made gay marriage legal that that publication has advocated this deviant practice. I say deviant because I would ask that you take a moment to physically check yourself, then check your spouse, partner, significant other, better half or lover. If you are with someone of the opposite sex you will notice, at first glance that your...

  • Tech Talk

    Gwen Cornwell, Remember When|Jan 14, 2015

I am sure that many of us senior citizens received “new tech” gifts or have needed to purchase a new cell phone, new appliance or even a new vehicle. The sad part of these purchases is that they do not come with a training session. We all have experienced that frustrating period of trying to make the new gadget work. I recall my dad getting a new vehicle and being very upset because he couldn’t get the air conditioner to work. Now just how many folks in the older population would look for a “snow flake” icon on the A/C button, rather than the...

  • Majority Leader Rosendale Reviews Opening Week

Matt Rosendale, State Senator District 18|Jan 14, 2015

The 64th Legislature began last week with the formal ceremonies and swearing in that surround each new legislature. It is always a treat to see all of the families and children sitting in the galleries and walking in the halls. Many will endure weeks of separation so that their loved ones may spend the next 4 months doing their very best to serve the state. The first order of business that we took up in the Senate was to confirm Sen. Debby Barrett (R) from Dillon, as the first woman to serve as the president of the Montana State Senate. I was...

  • Political Football

    Jan 14, 2015

Brand spanking new Montana Congressman Ryan Zinke, left, already has that betting-on-sports-with-other-politicians thing down – and with House Speaker John Boehner, no less. Zinke, the former All-PAC 10 Oregon Duck, and Boehner bet on Monday's College Football Championship game. Zinke lost because Boehner's Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Ducks, and the Montanan had to wear an Ohio State tie – yep, that one right there.... Full story
