A crowd large enough to fill a court room showed up on New Year's Eve to welcome the newcomers and to say goodbye to those going out of Valley County Office. David Pippin stepped down as County Commissioner and Paul Tweten took over the seat. The other newcomer is Christine Hillman who is now officially sworn in as the justice of the peace. Pippin retired after two terms of service, or 12 years. David Reinhardt will be taking over the chair position this year during his third term as a... Full story
January • Has Glasgow really been sucked into some vortex that's dropped the temperatures below zero? The easy answer is no. Tanja Fransen, warning coordination meteorologist at National Weather Service Glasgow, explains that this is actually a low pressure system that came down from the North Pole and brought cold weather with it. The Arctic cold front pushed down farther south than usual, which brought colder than average temperatures to much of the nation. • Resigning one city council sea...

Trying to peg down how the upcoming year for the ag industry will go is not an easy task. Some predictions will never be fully made, such as weather disasters or an outbreak of disease that will take a toll on crops and livestock. Knowing some numbers, though, on the local, national and global scale can help farmers predict the upcoming year in the market. Ryan Fast, who chairs the Trends in Ag seminar this year for the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture, explained that the board always tries to line up people that will be able to give...
The New Year came with a lot of snow and cold temperatures. The National Weather Service in Glasgow reported that 6.7 inches of snow fell on Monday, Jan. 5. On top of the snowfall from Friday and Saturday, the snowfall added up to over 11 inches in the month of January as of Tuesday morning. The good news is that the snowfall will slow down and not a whole lot of accumulation is expected in the upcoming week. Some areas may see about another inch at most. What followed the snow was a bitter blast of cold. Temperature fell below zero over the we...
The music world has lost a true legend with the passing of Little Jimmy Dickens. No one promoted the Grand Ole Opry and country music any more than the diminutive Dickens. During the early 1960s, the KRNT Theatre in Des Moines, Iowa, hosted a country music show the first Sunday of every month from September through May. My mother loved hearing Dickens sing, so when I saw that Dickens was on the schedule, I immediately purchased tickets for us. When he came out on the stage, my mother was completely mesmerized. Afterwards she told me that day... Full story
How many of you remember Howell and Ellen Davies? When I first became acquainted with them, they lived in the North Country and worked for the Ruffcorn Ranch. I remember the first time I was at their home – you got your drink of water from a dipper in a water bucket. Wow, that impressed me. Well, I was pretty young and we didn’t worry about germs much. The thing that most will remember about Howell Davies was his magic entertainment. He loved to do magic shows any place there might be an audience. I think he might have entertained at the Nor...
Does anyone see the hypocrisy in that headline? Is it oxymoronically incorrect? Wouldn't that be sorta like giving a convicted burglar a set of burglar tools upon his release from the joint? Or an arsonist a box of matches? Or how about issuing a “Slim Jim” to every person who has been in trouble for stealing cars? (For those of you who have led a sheltered life, a Slim Jim is a flat, flexible tool with a hook on the end used for opening locked cars without benefit of ownership or keys.) Also, I suggest giving every yegg (safecracker in 192...

The New Year feels good for the wrestling Scotties. Last week the team placed eighth in the state Class B/C power rankings with five wrestlers cracking the top 10 in their weight class – and last night they wrestled like they belong there. Glasgow took care of Glendive, 54-21, in a dual at the GHS gym, their first action since before the holidays. “You know, we wrestled tough,” coach Jory Casterline told The Courier after the dual. “During Christmas break, they beat each other up in that practice room, and I think they looked forward to comi... The 2014 football season for the Glasgow Scotties was memorable and made a lasting impression on many both in and outside the community even though the team may have fallen short of the goals and expectations for the players, coaches and community. That being said, the Scottie football team officially concluded the 2014 season with their annual football banquet prior to the Christmas break. As head coach, I spoke about a letter received from a playoff opponent family in addition to a number of a... Full story

Scoring was even for the teams in the third period with... Full story
The final results are in at Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Havre check station for the 2014 hunting season. Overall, hunter numbers and big-game harvest were down. “In general, big game harvest was slower this year,” said Havre-area wildlife biologist Scott Hemmer. “This is likely due in part to the elimination of all Region 6 deer B licenses and buck-only harvest on the A-tag for mule deer. The weather this year also may have affected harvest. It was unseasonably warm at the beginning of the season, which may have reduced game sight...
