    The Remington Fire that blasted up from northern Wyoming into southeastern Montana in late August burned 196,000 acres of grass, trees, hay, barns and most devastatingly, livestock. With erratic high winds and hot temperatures, ranchers had scant time to evacuate their animals. Livestock losses will not be entirely known until cattle are gathered this fall, but the loss is predicted to be substantial.     The Elks National Foundation is now accepting applications for the Legacy Awards $4,000 scholarships, which are available to children and grandchildren of Elks members. Great-grandchildren are not eligible. For the 2025 contest, any child or grandchild (or step-child, step-grandchild or legal ward) of a living Elk who joined the Order on or before April 1, 2022, or a charter member of a Lodge that was instituted on or after April 1, 2022, is eligible to apply.     The November Election is rapidly approaching, and absentee ballots are set to be mailed out Oct. 11, in Montana. As a result of the federal holiday, Indigenous Peoples Day, on Oct. 14, absentee ballots are expected to arrive to mailboxes later that week. In Valley County, there are currently 5,007 registered voters. This number is down compared to the last Presidential Election in 2020 when Valley County had 5,136 registered voters.     Glasgow Learn to Skate is preparing for its 21st season. Skating instruction is available for preschool through adults using a curriculum endorsed by US Figure Skating and USA Hockey.
