Glasgow has a new community cooking and dining facility, and it's located in the new addition of the Milk River Activity Center. "Anyone in the community can rent it to host a birthday party, a public benefit or a bake sale," said Mark Wethern, executive director of the Milk River Activity Center. "It is designed to be self-sufficient space that can be closed off of the main building. It is a great space for us and will be a great space for the community. That's what we wanted when we started th...
"Without the Booster Club, the school would be strapped," said Mike Pehlke, the new president of the Scottie Booster Club, referring to the way the Booster Club acts as a fundraising arm for Glasgow High School. "A lot of people think that we only fund the athletics. That's not true. We support all aspects of student extracurricular activities." Booster clubs are a common sidekick to American high schools. They raise money to help support school activities. In Glasgow, the Scottie Booster Club...
Opened in 2013, Hi-Line Cakes and Bakery is something like a hidden oasis of cleverly conceived and delicious foodstuffs. Many Glasgow residents don't even know it's there. Owner Melissa Mickelson's caramel rolls are popular on Saturday mornings (and any other time we can get them, for that matter), and a steady group of regulars take advantage of the lunchtime fare and free Wi-Fi. The menu items that captured our interest, however, were the cupcakes. I was hesitant when our publisher James...

Current or prospective sailors are invited down to their docks to get on the water under sail or to contribute by demonstrating the best of the sailing world. Julie Burke of the Fort Peck Lake Sailing Club is planning to kick off another great season with the Summer...
The Glasgow Reds baseball team is home again. They weathered eight games in five days on the road—two in Miles City where the Reds split with the Mavericks, then taking silver in the Buffalo Wild Wings Tournament in Billings. The result: Four wins, two losses and two ties, and an overall 12-8-2 record. Reds head coach Jack Sprague has this to say: “We’re not getting the results that we were expecting at this point in the year but this is a perfect time to evaluate our team. We usually use the Lewistown tournament to gauge where were at for t...

It wasn't the outcome they had hoped for. The team that has built success from powerful bats found itself outhit by their Western Montana opponents. Adding a few costly errors into the mix, the Glasgow softball team exited the state tournament in Belgrade on day two. The Scotties dropped the first game to Florence-Carlton 11-1. They stayed alive by narrowly beating Eastern 4-seed Shepherd 8-6 in an extra inning, then lost out of the double elimination to the eventual second-place team, Ronan,...
The Glasgow Reds baseball team lost a friendly pickup game in Sidney on May 20. The Reds got on board first with one run at the top of the second inning. Sidney answered back with one in the fourth and two in the fifth inning. Reds scored again in the sixth, but did not mount enough offense to turn the tide. Reds Ryan Padden pitched four innings and struck out two, while Jake Kolstad pitched two innings, striking out one. They walked four and yielded only two hits. However, with one error made b...
"It'd be nice to be in the championship," said Sadie Sukut, one of the two senior leaders on the Glasgow softball team. "Yeah. A trophy would be sweet," said Autumn Hopkins, the other senior. The 2015 team started out as a young and inexperienced team. But over the course of the season, they have battled, rallied, set goals and repeatedly reached them. They hold an impressive 17-2 record going into state this weekend. Head coach Mark Falcon wants his squad to "finish strong". After beating Cut...
Mr. Vaupel has once again chosen to attack a general group of people in the U.S. Since he did not name any specific individuals in his opinion column (Incrementally Incremental, May 6, 2015), he probably figured that he did not need to be accountable for his words. Mr. Vaupel opened his column with a dreamy first-person narrative, a Native American Indian story-telling the early encounter between the whites and Indians. Like some bad novels, the narrator dies so that the story could shift to a different voice. The occupation of this land by...
It's the season of sunflower seeds, hot dogs, and sunscreen. The Glasgow Reds traveled to Havre on Sunday, May 10 to open their season with some Mother's Day baseball. After a small ceremony to celebrate the mothers in attendance, the double header showcased the younger players from both sides in the first game. Reds B Kasey Seyfert started on the mound, followed by Brayden Jackson and the closer, Hunter Losleben. There was good rotation of players, with the whole roster getting some game time....
The Glasgow Scottie softball team knows how to battle. "These girls dig deep and work hard. Six times this season we've had comeback wins. Our team gets along well, they stay positive and cheer each other on. Jumping up to a 4-0 lead in the second innings, the Scottie girls maintained a 3-run lead for the rest of the game to earn this non-conference win. The Scotties are 2-0 against class A Glendive this season. Of...
Baseball diamonds come alive in the spring time in Glasgow. The Cal Ripken League opened their season in late April; the softball girls traded winter caps for helmets as soon as the ground thawed. A rare warm and dry spring has primed the area youth for another promising summer sports season in Northeast Montana. The Glasgow Reds baseball players started their practice on April 1. Spring training comes with a large amount of soil, grass, water and facility works-by volunteers-to get the f...
The Scottie softball team suffered their first conference loss to what many consider the top team in the division, the Conrad Cowgirls. The Cowgirls shut down the Scotties, 2-0, on April 25 at the Columbus Invitational Tournament. But not before the Scotties picked up three conference wins in Columbus, beating Huntley Project Lady Red Devils 10-4, Colstrip 16-8, and narrowly edging the tough Stillwater, 5-4. That brings the Scotties to a 3-1 in conference record, 9-2 overall. Scottie Tyra Johnson was the winning pitcher vs. Huntley Project and...

After a scoreless first quarter, the Scotties cruised to a 35-6 victory in a road game over Shelby on Sept 19. Racking up a whopping total of 475 yards, Glasgow showcased its most offensively charged game this season, perhaps the most in recent years. Ground and aerial attacks were fairly balanced at 211 and 253 yards, respectively. Credit must be given to the young Shelby team for playing with solid defens... Full story

It looks like the Scotties have a habit of experiencing a shaky start, then knowing how to get back on track. That was the pattern after Glasgow's second game of the season. The Scotties fought hard and won a come-from-behind victory over the home team Dawson County Red Devils, 29-14, on Sept. 5. The first quarter was all Glendive. Glasgow mustered only 12 yards of offense and fumbled twice 5 minutes into the game – the second of which Glendive easily converted to a touchdown, a 12-yard run b... Full story

Air temperature was about 50 degrees, and the water looked cold. Trepidation was visible on many faces. There was Marj Markle with bum knees and a body that she...
Ready or not, here it comes. Zero-week, first game, a non-conference matchup that counts toward overall standing – Scotties head coach Greg Liebelt and his staff were anxious to see what their 2014 team could do. With only 11 days of practice, the Aug. 30 game in Colstrip was an opportunity for the team to evaluate its strengths and weaknesses. Can this team repeat the performance of the 2013 squad that went deep into the playoffs? Glasgow took a good first step, beating the Colts, 14-7. B... Full story
Fort Peck has vast land and water. It holds fishing tournaments, foot races, bike races and a sailboat regatta. What else is missing from Fort Peck? Triathlon. The idea of starting a triathlon first came to Carin Barnett, a resident of Fort Peck, when she thought about attending a couple of out-of-town events. Friends encourage her to practice on her own right here at home. The idea grew more exciting as she realized that this could be a fun community event with more friends getting involved. She named it Under The Dam Triathlon. It's slated...
