The 26th annual Montana Governor’s Cup Walleye Tournament set for this weekend has already set an eight-year high in registration numbers. With three days to go, 109 teams have signed up to participate in the two-day event, the most since 2005, when 119 teams fished Fort Peck Lake. Last year, the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture had registered 83 duos the Wednesday before the event started and had 105 total at week’s end. With late registrations bound to come in even the day of, this year’s Gov Cup is likely to surpass 2005...
Thank you. Thank you for that great small-town hospitality. Thank you for your smiles. And the waves from people I've never met driving by. Thank you for the interviews, the quotes, the great sports, the breathtaking views, the big sky, the experience. Thank you for the opportunity to spend my first year with my wife, and in my first “big-boy” job in a wonderful community. You’ve taught me what a winter really entails. It used to be 40-degree days with maybe a few inches of rain. Not anymo...
Already atop the Eastern A standings, the Glasgow Reds are in good position to win the regular season title. However, a 10-game home stand over the next week will go a long way in deciding the conference. Starting on July 10 with two games against Lewistown, and ending July 18 with two more contests against the Billings Cardinals, the Reds host 10-straight conference games against five opponents. Two-game sets with the Billings Blue Jays, Sidney and Laurel are also scheduled. With the Reds...
The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team came out of Glendive with a third-place finish as a team, two high-point winners and one big goal in mind, focusing on attitude during the homestretch of the season. Falling short of the Sidney Tiger Sharks and the Glendive Wet Devils, Glasgow topped Lewistown, Roundup, Plentywood, Scobey, Malta and Chinook during the two-day meet, scoring 511 team points. High-point winners Khloe Krumwiede and Trevor Johnson led the way for Glasgow with each accumulating three...
The most complete Glasgow Kiwanis swim team yet mustered enough strength for second place in Plentywood over the weekend. The two-day meet saw 34 Glasgow swimmers compete, the most the team has had so far this season. The results were immediate as Glasgow only fell to Sidney despite the long practices during the week. “They’re really tired right now so we were really happy with how well they swam despite the fact that they were broken down,” said Alex Leuchars, co-head coach. “Right now they’re not at a place in their training where we expect...
Fishing teams can expect a full payout at the 26th annual Governor’s Cup set for July 11-13, as the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce decided to pay back 100 percent of tournament fees. “The Gov Cup committee this year decided, to try to attract more teams into the tournament, to offer 100 percent payback . . . every bit of the entry fees that are paid will be paid back to the fishermen,” said Stan Ozark, a site coordinator for the tournament. Prior to this year, 80 percent of all fees were paid back in the winnings. Starting in 1998, through 2002, t...
It’s a good problem to have. As the timeless baseball adage goes, “You can never have enough pitching.” The Glasgow Reds might be the exception. The Reds are 23-4 on the season, collecting a dozen or more blowout wins in the process. Their offense has been spectacular, scoring well more than 10 runs per game. Their pitching has been better. “Our pitching is doing an outstanding job,” said Manager Jack Sprague. “We don’t expect anything less than perfection on the mound.” The Reds are as close to...
The Reds finally lost. After 17 straight victories, the Glasgow Reds fell 11-3 to the Calgary PBF Redbirds during the Harold Gjerde Memorial Tournament in Lewistown this weekend. The loss dropped the Reds to the third-place game at the tournament, which they eventually won 9-5 over Great Falls. But to Manager Jack Sprague, the loss could be a good thing for the Reds. “It was good to see a team that made you pay for mistakes. When we made mistakes, they made you pay.” said Sprague. “So we have...
It’s been a theme in the early season. Coaches Matt Dangleis and Alex Leuchars, in an effort to increase stamina, push their swimmers hard at practice, expecting them to be too exhausted to perform at their peak in the weekend meets; yet, the swimmers have continued to rise above expectations. This week was no different. “[The meet] went really well, actually kind of shocked me a little. A lot of my swimmers were exhausted and tired,” said Leuchars. “We’ve been pounding them hard.” A team of 3...
The slugging Reds continued their offensive outpour for a perfect 7-0 record on the week. Coming into the Aaron’s Tournament in Billings on Saturday and Sunday, the Reds were averaging nearly 10 runs per game, racking up 51 extra-base hits in only 15 games. Those trends continued in Billings, even if not immediately. The Reds began the tournament on Saturday night with a 4-2 win over the Billings Blue Jays. The Blue Jays struck first, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first, capitalizing o...
Over 280 participants ran, walked or biked the Longest Dam Race on Saturday, enjoying near perfect weather at the 19th annual event. A brisk wind that gave runners, walkers and bikers trouble on the home stretch of the course was the only flaw on a day where two-year old Sadre White completed the 1-mile walk/run with her dad, Blaine White, and 65-year-old Donna Kloker finished the 10K run in an outstanding time of 55 minutes, 51.5 seconds. Mel Hoffman, 49, was the first to cross the finish line...
At Glasgow High School, student really does come before athlete in student-athlete. Across three sports, GHS had 28 student-athletes qualify for academic all-state. To qualify, students must earn a varsity letter in a MHSA sanctioned sport, and earn a 3.5 or higher GPA in the final quarter of the school year. Glasgow has 18 student-athletes qualify with a 4.0 GPA, the highest GPA recognized by MHSA. “I think it’s really a tribute to how hard they work in the classroom and what [the stu...
There were close to 10,000 collisions in Glasgow on Saturday. All of them were with malicious purpose as 17 drivers and cars participated in the 80s & Up Demolition Derby at the Glasgow Fairgrounds. With a calcutta immediately preceding the wreckage, and thousands in prize money on the line, the drivers weren’t holding back any steel-crunching punches. Coming out of the twisted ball of metal was Fred Potter, who took the top spot in the finals over second-place finisher and defending champion W...
For the 15th time in 20 tries, Montana defeated North Dakota in the Knights of Columbus Badlands Bowl on Saturday in Miles City. Montana jumped out of the gates for a 29-point lead in the first quarter en route to a 43-29 victory in the 20th annual game between the two states. North Dakota tried to wage a comeback in the second half, causing a few turnovers, but Montana ultimately defended their home turf at Connors Stadium, raising their record in Montana to 9-2. The game is comprised of stars...
Only 17 Glasgow Kiwanis swimmers made the trip to Roundup for a two-day meet over the weekend. Glasgow still came home with a third-place trophy. Even after an impressive opening meet the weekend before, coaches Matt Dangleis and Alex Leuchars were thrilled with the progress in just one week. “The biggest [difference] from this point in the season last year is DQs (disqualifications),” said Leuchars. “Even our older swimmers were DQing all the time, but this year, I think we only had two DQs t...
Glasgow’s bats were red-hot in a five-game tourney in Havre this weekend. The Reds outscored their opponents 66-7, clubbing their way to a sweep of their Northstar Tournament opponents. “Typically, in our program, we throw strikes, we play defense, we try to develop it to play close games because that’s typically the way we have to win,” said Head Coach Jack Sprague. “But the way we swung it this weekend, it was pretty much over early.” The Reds opened the weekend with two games on Friday, thr...
They are contenders this year. Returning for their second year as coaches, Matt Dangleis and Alex Leuchars were impressed to see the improvements made during last season carried over to the beginning of this year for the Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team. Glasgow traveled to Harlem for their first meet of the year on Saturday and Leuchars and Dangleis came away excited for the upcoming season. “We were shocked about how much better they were this season than they were at the beginning of last season. W...
Over 150 are already registered to run, walk or bike the 19th annual Longest Dam Race on Saturday. With registrations accepted the morning of the event, over 250 are expected to participate in the morning event – especially with the good weather that looks likely to cooperate. According to the Glasgow Weather Service, the high on Saturday is 75 and the low is 51 in the morning, with only 10-15 mph winds. There is a slight chance of rain, however. Registration for the event continues in the m...
The North won their fourth-straight Class B All-Star football game over the south on Saturday. With both teams scoring in bunches, the North took home a 48-27 victory at Rocky Mountain College’s Klindt field, the 25th annual event. The win also gave the North a 13-12 lead in the overall series. Rosters are made up of seniors from Class B schools from across the state, with districts 1B, 2B, 6B and 7B making up the north and 3B, 4B and 5B comprising the South’s roster. Representing the 2B wer...
That rumbling you heard on Saturday and Sunday was not an earthquake. It was the ear-shredding grumble of 400-horsepower engines running down a dirt drag strip and through four-foot deep mud. Milk River Motorsports put on a two-day event showcasing some of the most powerful and meanest trucks, cars and other in Montana. On Saturday, dozens competed in five classes of dirt drag racing. Glasgow’s Matt Wilfong took first with a time of 6.6 seconds in the stock class. Roy Stroppe was second and Joan...
Champions reigned in the Milk River Catfish Classic on Saturday. The top five teams were all former winners of the title, including the top duo of Nate and Jerry Molstad, who reeled in 37.29 pounds of catfish for their fourth Classic title. The Molstad mates exacted ‘a little bit’ of vengeance in the win, edging out young newcomers Gage Gordon and MacKenzie Reid, who won last year’s title just ahead of the Molstads, who finished in second. “It was nice to take them (Gordon and Reid) out this ye...
It didn’t exactly go to plan. The breaks didn’t always go the Scotties’ way. And the weather didn’t play fair. Nevertheless, the Scotties still had a successful spring sports season and are set up to be even more successful in the seasons ahead. The smallest Glasgow High School class since 1930 graduated on May 26, including several highly-decorated athletes, such as Bryan Larson and Alex Page, who were named Scottie Athletes of the Year recently, joining a long line of distinguished Scottie com...
Defending champions JR Rasmusan and Norm Sillerud got off to a good start as they try to repeat as “Team of the Year” for the Fort Peck Championship Series. The duo took first place at the Rock Creek Tournament on Saturday with a top weight of 88.96 pounds. The two-day event kicked off the Fort Peck Championship Series consisting of three tournaments on Fort Peck Lake over the next two months. Rasmusan and Sillerud won the series last year, coming from behind in the standings with a win at Hel...
Walt Dalbey was the only Reds pitcher to receive a loss in four games this weekend. The unquestioned ace of the staff was set to lead the Reds to a four-game sweep of Glendive in the final game on Sunday. He threw five innings and only gave up three earned runs. But Glendive scored five unearned, as well, giving the Blue Devils a commanding 8-0 lead through four innings. The Reds tried to scrape back into the game, scoring eight runs in the seventh, but it wasn’t quite enough as they fell 11-9....
Clearing her final high jump gave Megan Dailey not only the event state title, but also her Scottie girls a spot on the podium. The high jump, one of the last events of the day at the Class B State Meet in Bozeman on Friday and Saturday, looked to be anybody’s event to win with five to six girls coming in with season-best marks of 5 feet, 2 inches, the same personal record for Dailey. “I wasn’t really expecting [to win],” said Dailey. “I was really hoping to place but I didn’t think I’d win.” B...
