A recent picture in The Courier featured the fire at the Roxy Theatre. How many of you remember that fire? It consumed a good portion of Glasgow businesses on 2nd Avenue South, as well as the north side of 5th Street. I vaguely remember lots of smoke and fire hoses running down and across streets that were filled with lots of runoff water. What could I have been doing there? Does anyone remember what day of the week that happened? I think that every available male helped with the firefighting efforts. Not only the Roxy was doomed. Other busines...
Recent news reports have included the major snow in the Eastern states and the hardship some children had to endure by spending the night at school, sleeping on hard floors. I think there are a couple of gentlemen in our area that may have a hard time sympathizing with those kids. One of the aforementioned gentlemen told me of a time in the ‘30s (maybe about 1936) when two Glasgow buses were unable to make the routes home, leaving these kids stranded at the high school. (Many of you will remember it as the old junior high building.) This was n...
Those couple of windy springlike days that we had made our creek run and spread a lot of water over the hay meadow, which is now a sheet of ice. Made me think of all of the impromptu ice skating parties we had. Do you remember 4-H groups or just individuals getting together for a day of outside recreation and camaraderie? A lot of us kids had the luxury of frozen creeks or springs. You may have gotten to walk a mile or so, but that was common. You could skate one way for maybe a mile before turning around. The organized skating parties usually...
I read in “Yesterday’s Courier Memories” that paid “bounty” hunters in Valley County killed 228 coyotes 79 years ago, as well as a bobcat or two. I remember seeing a couple of bobcats in our area (not 79 years ago, but almost), but I doubt very many area citizens have seen one. Then there were actual rabbit drives. There were so many rabbits causing damage that drives were organized, driving the rabbits to an area like a river bend, and then they were “thinned out.” I am sure that we have residents who can recall those events. I doubt that sk...
I hope that we will not have too many more extremely cold days. Early day travel during cold weather must have been lots of fun, even in the early days of the automobile. Heaters in vehicles were a luxury, and far from efficient. I think that almost everyone in this area had a sheepskin coat, gloves and caps. I have listened to stories about foot stones used to keep your feet warm. Some of these were about an inch thick and 6-8 inches in length and width. I think that they were slate or some similar type of stone. My husband thinks that they...
Do you remember when Glasgow had a community Christmas tree during the holiday season? These lovely trees were set up on 2nd Avenue South at the 5th Street intersection for some years. These were large trees, however not so large that traffic could not flow on either side of them. I remember the lights, but do not remember that there were any other decorations on them. When was the last year a tree was erected? Some of those old practices, such as this, are missed. I remember the occasional trips made during the holidays. It was always a...
A reader recently sent a letter remembering when the Fuller Brush man made calls on the rural homes, as well as towns. Valley County had one from Wolf Point in the 1950s. The Fuller Brush man not only sold brushes but cosmetics, household cleaners, mops, brooms and other such items. I personally remember several items that I purchased from the Fuller man that I really liked, and have found a couple of those favorite items in some of those little household catalogues that you sometimes see in the mail. Other brands that come to mind that were...
It is the season when most of us make several trips to the post office for mailings. Do you remember purchasing envelopes with postage embossed on them? Many times pre-addressed, stamped envelopes were enclosed with the bill you received at month end. The envelopes that I can remember were 3 centers. I think that the embossed stamp was round, a little bigger than a quarter, maybe dark purple in color with white letters and the profile of maybe George Washington in the center, also white. Of course there was the penny postcard, but that stamp...
Like most of us, I am thinking of gifts for Christmas. I think that men are the hardest to buy for, which brought to mind hair brushes, of all things. Do you remember when an appropriate gift for the men in your life was a nice hair brush set that came in a genuine leather zipper case? It seems that there were two brushes in the case. Was this one for each hand, or maybe one of them was a clothes brush to be used on those three-piece suits that were worn then. Of course very few men had long hair at that time, so I am not getting a mental pictu...
Remember when Glasgow had businesses that did tailoring? Friedl’s Mens Wear comes to mind. It seems that the art of tailoring is rather a thing of the past, but that was a customer service at Friedl’s. You men will have to correct me if I am wrong, but I think when men of the area purchased a suit there it could be tailored to fit you. Not only were the pants shortened if needed, but sleeves could also be shortened or lengthened if excess fabric allowed. Maybe a side seam or two could be taken in or let out, darts added, any of those lit...
This "remember" was sent to me from a reader, former Glasgow resident Laura Knight Haefer of Billings, in response to my recent writings on grocery stores from years ago. Laura reminisces here about Parke's Grocery, which operated about 1½ blocks from Southside School: "I remember very well growing up just three and a half blocks from our little neighborhood grocery store. Yes, Parke's Grocery was three and a half blocks from our family home at the dike. The David Parke family lived in...
It is so great to have readers call. I now know, and have committed to memory, the name of the grocery on 3rd Avenue North. It was the Northside Grocery, run by Lennie Bollinger. I am going to assume that it later moved to the current Dale Plumbing location and became part of Gordon's Foods. So many of us still have special memories of the little local grocery, spending our penny or maybe a whole nickel on candy, or maybe the slicing of the lunch meat for our sandwich. One of my readers also called to say there were a couple of groceries... Full story
Remember all of the small grocery stores that used to be? In Glasgow you may remember The Green Front, located close to where Albertson’s is now, or White’s, which was close to the Catholic Church. And I believe there was a grocery on Third Avenue North. Anyone remember or know the name of it? There was Hanel’s somewhere close to the present day DQ and Gordon’s, which was located in the present Dale Plumbing building. The south side had Blankenberg’s, across from the courthouse, and the Rice,...
Here’s one for all older homemakers and cooks. Do you remember all of the old bread that was saved? The heel was never thrown away if not eaten. Leftover bread was never thrown away. Now, moldy bread was probably thrown out to the chickens or pigs, but any odd leftover bread was saved. Leftover bread was most often used for bread pudding. (Remember the bread pudding at Johnnie’s Café?) Bread was also dried to be used later as bread crumbs or stuffing bread. It seems that all older homemakers had a bag of dried bread stored somewhere. The fun...
Remember when all vehicles had crank up windows, no air conditioning and no seat belts? I am surprised there are so many of us who survived to remember those days. Actually, a Courier reader was remembering those days and commented on the days of riding in the back, or box, of the pickup during the summer months and enduring the constant hits from grasshoppers. These could be most irritating as they sometimes actually hurt. Or you could make of game of it and see who got the most tags, or hits, from point A to point B. I remember that you...
Thanks to all of you readers, I once again have several topics rattling around in my head. Since it is football season I happened to recall a photo of the GHS football team taken in the late '20s. How many remember the uniforms worn by our athletes at that time? The helmets resembled headgear worn by airplane pilots during WWII. I can’t imagine they afforded much protection to the head. Shoulder pads, etc., appeared to be pretty scrimpy too. Does anyone recall the amount of injuries that were s... Full story
Remember when everyone recycled without giving it a thought? Housewives recycled so many things, with those neat “Old Tins” being primary. How many homes had a set of coffee can canisters for flour, sugar, etc.? And those rural women found so many more uses for them. Tin cans kept the mouse out of necessities like flour and sugar. Of course old lard tins were really great for that purpose, as most flour and sugar was purchased in at least 50 pound quantities. If you ever opened one of those old unused lard cans you could tell by the smell wha...
At some time I asked about canning jars with a smaller opening than the present day regular canning jars. Does anyone remember what type of food preservation these were used for? Juice is the only thing that comes to my mind. Growing up with parents and grandparents that survived the Depression days, it was normal to save everything as it might be needed at some time. In that era no one had TV to actually know about hoarders and, yes, there is a difference between saving and hoarding. In my saved treasures I found lids that fit those small... Full story
I thought that I didn’t have any “Remembers” to share today as I had taken a four-day weekend of R & R. However, we opted to bring our 2-year-old great-grandchildren home with us and opted not to bring a DVD along. I did remember all of the funny songs that you could make up or sing, making the miles go faster, as well as some of the other fun things our parents used to do to keep the kids occupied. Of course, car seats limit some of the activities, which included standing up in the back seat watching out the windows for semi trucks, train... Full story
I was driving along the irrigation ditch during these last couple days of hot, hot weather and remembered how inviting any water could and can be on a hot day. If you were a country kid, you can remember playing in a water pond in the pasture, swimming or even water skiing in the irrigation ditch, or even making use of the horse trough (watering tank). That was before thinking or knowing about all of the dangers. Dangers other than accidents immediately come to mind. There was the possibility of getting duck itch from those stagnant ponds that... Dear Editor: I would like commend the Opheim area residents for the outstanding job they do in keeping up their cemetery. I make stops at the cemetery occasionally and while it is native grass, etc., it always looks nice even well past Memorial Day. The cemetery was specially trimmed the day of David Nelson’s funeral. Just want to tell those who went to the effort to make it that way that your efforts did not go unnoticed. Great job. Gwen Cornwell Glasgow... Full story
Do you remember when the standard average gift at bridal showers and weddings seemed to be sheets, blankets and towels? I don’t remember that the bride and/or groom registered at stores other than the jewelry stores that carried crystal, china and silverware. The bride most always registered her pattern choice at one of the stores that carried those items. Do brides even consider china and crystal anymore? I am pretty sure that one of the reason gifts mentioned above are not a choice is because there is the question of bed size and color s...
Remember county fairs of the past? I try to remember that “change” is good, but what has happened to our fair? With all of our time saving conveniences of today, why are there so few exhibits? The majority of women today no longer garden or preserve produce, sew or even mend – therefore no exhibits in those areas. What about livestock and grains, or the farm equipment and recreational displays? Do businesses no longer feel a need to promote their services, or why the lack of booths under the grandstand? Maybe we as individuals do not care...
Do you remember when young men on the high school football team were all anxious to get a job on a farm or ranch for the summer? Lots of young men were hired to stack bales during the summer. This was before all of the luxurious, time saving equipment that we enjoy now. The bales lay in the field waiting for a strapping young man to first load them on a flat bed of some kind, and then convey them to the place they would be stacked for winter. Luckily for those that wanted to build their muscles, you then got to unload all of the bales you just...
Do you remember summer vacations – vacations when the whole family packed into the family car? Of course, at that time the trunk of the family car was big enough to hold a tremendous amount of luggage. Many families also packed along their meals while on the road. So at least for day one, you had to make room for that. Dad usually did the driving, and Mom was the map reader. Oh, and Mom was usually the one that convinced Dad to stop at a filling station to get directions from Point A to Point B – after many circles around the block. Mom was...
