Eleven Highlanders extended their season at this weekend 's prestigious Black Hills Nationals / AAU World Folkstyle Wrestling Championships in Spearfish, South Dakota. There were a record 1,472 wrestlers in attendance at the 20th Annual event. The most prestigious tournament in our home state is the Montana Open at the Billings Metra! GWC brought the 6th largest team to the event this year with 55 wrestlers. It was a total team effort to put up 221 points and finish in 13th place overall out of 195 clubs in attendance. The Highlanders were 3rd place amongst Class B/C feeder programs. WOW! The Highlanders put on one heck of a show in Montana's greatest venue this weekend. For the first time in club history; the Glasgow Wrestling Club Boys WON the Large Team AAU State Championship. The Girls won the Large Team title in 2022 and the Boys have claimed Small and Medium team titles throughout the storied history of the program, but had never went up against every single Class AA feeder program to win the highest honor. The Highlanders are in midseason form. Wolf Point and Havre provided some great competition over the weekend and the boys and girls once again seemingly passed every test. The club split up on Saturday as the majority wrestled in the Wolf Point Invitational while many fifth thru eighth graders headed west to the Havre Middle School Invitational. GWC never backs down from competition! This weekend was no different, as the Highlanders traveled southwest to Helena for the prestigious annual Helltown Throwdown. This year's event featured 71 different youth clubs and a record 1,111 boy and girl wrestlers in attendance. How bout them Highlanders!!! What a start to the 2024 Club season for GWC. On Sunday, the Miles City Invitational featured 15 clubs and 399 wrestlers. The Highlanders had the second most wrestlers in attendance with 38 strong. Only the tournament host had more competing on the mats. The Montana Open is hands down the toughest youth tournament in the region. This year's version featured 2,041 grapplers from 16 different states. The Glasgow Wrestling Club brought a record 57 kids to the event, making them the fifth largest team in attendance. Glasgow Wrestling Club For the Courier The Glasgow Wrestling Club has really been making the Metra in Billings their second home over the last few years and they continued that trend this weekend at the State AAU Folkstyle Tournament. The 1,592 wrestlers who competed over three days were the most ever in a State AAU Tournament in Montana. The Highlanders were a big part of helping set the new mark. Wow. Statement made. GWC is peaking as we head into the final month of the season! On Feb. 25, Highlanders headed 70 miles east to the Annual Poplar Invitational. At the end of the day; 20 Individual Champions were crowned and 45 found their way into a top three finish. Our overall individual record was 100 wins and 54 losses with 78 pins (41 pins against). A new record 472 wrestlers from 17 different clubs competed in Scottie Gymnasium this past Saturday for the 2023 Glasgow Wrestling Club Invitational. The attendance number broke last year's total of 455 grapplers. We also had our own new record 85 Highlanders competing on the home mats. Wow! Great job Highlanders. We tied a club record by bringing 53 kids to the big dance: the Montana Open at the Metra this weekend. Just as they've done all season long, our guys and gals did not disappoint. We came away with a club record five champions and another club record 24 top six place winners. It was a monumental weekend for the Glasgow Wrestling Club. After coming up just a half point short of the Large Team Girls State Championship in 2021, the Highlander Girls came out with intensity and won the 2022 Large Team AAU State Championship. This year's girls tournament featured 54 youth wrestling clubs and 302 total Girls. GWC also swept the "10-man Championship" in the girls tournament winning the Inaugural Walt Egged Award. The stretch run is upon us! With only three weekends remaining, the Highlanders split up this past weekend at the “Border Brawl” in Plentywood and at the Montana Middle School State Wrestling Championships in Lewistown. It was another banner weekend for our GWC kids of all ages. In Plentywood, we entered an event-best 35 wrestlers. The small inter-divisional meet featured 167 kids from eight local clubs. What an outstanding opening weekend for our Highlanders down in Miles City at the "Little Cowboy"! We entered a huge contingent of 44 boys and girls on Sunday and walked out of the event with 13 Individual CHAMPIONS and 30 top-3 place winners. Another great weekend for the Highlanders! This weekend we had 19 wrestlers competing at the Baker Invitational and the Wild West Championships in Casper, Wyoming. In Baker, our grapplers managed nine top 3 finishes and three individual championships.
