    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Aug 12, 2015

This weekend, sailors from Montana and Canada will converge on the Fort Peck Marina for big water, big fun and big sky. The 2015 Fort Peck Lake Sailing Regatta begins Friday, Aug. 14, with a racing seminar from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. The seminar will be for the benefit of all sailors and race committee members, or for anyone curious about sailboat racing in general. Also at 2 p.m., there will be a brief dry-land presentation covering starting sequences and signals, course layout, and rules. At 3 p.m.,...

  • Sports, Summer Reflections

    Georgie Kulczyk, Soapbox Soliloquy|Aug 5, 2015

Two very important things in my life came to an end this past weekend: swim team and Reds baseball. I must admit, I'm more than a little thankful, but only because I'm tired. My son started his baseball career with T-ball and never looked back. I don't think he could love doing anything more. I enjoyed every minute I was able to watch him play. I especially enjoyed watching him play Cal Ripken baseball at the Jeff Jurgens Field. More than that though, I have watched the best group of young men g...

  • Glasgow Swimmers Ride the Wave to State Championship

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Aug 5, 2015

Victory is sweet – just ask any Glasgow Kiwanis swimmer. With just 29 swimmers, the Thunder brought home gold this past weekend from the state swim meet in Roundup, outscoring five other teams in their division. Not long into the first day of the meet, it was apparent that it was going to be a memorable weekend. The powerhouse relay team of Katie Kaiser, Khloe Krumwiede, Jordan Kulczyk, and DJ Rasmusan proved they were a force to be reckoned with, winning gold in the 200m freestyle relay. The 1...

  • Thunder Places Fifth at Divisionals

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 29, 2015

Where do I start? So much happened this weekend at the divisional swim meet in Plentywood, I don't even know where to begin. The weather is always safe, right? Wrong. It was hot. Really hot. That probably goes without saying, but there was some notable weather on Saturday. The meet was going full swing when suddenly, at around 3 p.m., Mother Nature reared her ugly head and humbled everyone in her path. The afternoon was perfectly still and serene until there was a strong but fleeting burst of...

  • NE Montana Relay for Life Set for August 14-15

    Georgie Kulczyk, For The Courier|Jul 22, 2015

Relay for Life is more than just an event. It's an experience. It's powerful. It's uplifting. It's HOPE. The Relay began in May 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran around a track in Tacoma, Wash., for 24 hours. He ultimately raised $27,000 for the American Cancer Society and inspired others to join the movement. To date, Relay for Life has raised over $5 billion to fight cancer. Northeast Montana's Relay for Life will be held at the Valley County fairgrounds in Glasgow beginning August 14 a...

  • Rocky Mountain Vet Brings Mobile Clinic To Glasgow

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 22, 2015

It seems that some of the people who do the most good in the world are also the most unassuming. That was my immediate impression of Dr. Jeff Young. Although Animal Planet premiered a ten-part series starring Young as Dr. Jeff: Rocky Mountain Vet just four days prior to his visit in Glasgow, the compassionate vet was not the least bit "Hollywood." He was all business at times and it was clear that his priority was the care of the animals brought to him, but he also made himself available to his...

  • Thunder Caps Off Regular Season with Fourth Place in Chinook

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 22, 2015

Chinook was the setting for the last regular swim meet of the season this past weekend. The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder was represented by less than half of their team for the two day event. The team eventually brought home fourth place and had three high point winners. Dalton Sand, Trevor Johnson, and Katie Kaiser each won all three of their events in their age groups and received individual trophies for their efforts. The smallest group of competitors for the Thunder was the 8 and under girls....

  • Thunder Rolls Through Scobey

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 15, 2015

For every Thunder swimmer that won a race in Scobey this past weekend, a new pool record was established. That's one of the benefits of competing in a newly constructed swimming pool. The relay teams did very well, as is typical for the Thunder. Each Glasgow relay team placed at least third, with four first place finishes. Earning third place finishes for the girls were the 8 & under 100m freestyle and medley relays, the 9-10 100m freestyle relay, and the 11-12 200m medley relay. Earning second...

  • Lewistown Hosts Fourth of July Meet

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 8, 2015

Despite having one of the largest number of registered swimmers in their division, the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder had the least number of swimmers participate in the Lewistown meet held this past weekend. Senior swimmer Tony Kaiser was the only male swimmer from Glasgow to attend. Also attending from Glasgow were senior swimmer Jordan Kulczyk, intermediate swimmer Katie Kaiser, and junior swimmer Raelee Dowden. Although they had a low number of swimmers, the Thunder achieved some fairly...

  • Thankful on Fourth of July

    Georgie Kulczyk, Reader Commentary|Jul 1, 2015

To our community: I’m seeing a lot of posts (Facebook) about gay marriage. Lots of words being used like abomination, sinners, Christians, opinions, morality, etc. (I’m no expert, but I’m thinking a lot of those words were used during the civil rights movement). I can only say how thankful I am that I live in America where people can express their opinions freely. I am thankful for the men and women who fought and continue to fight for our freedoms. I am thankful that I am alive to see the world changing. I am thankful for those who are not i...

  • Thunder Struggle in the Heat at Glendive

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jul 1, 2015

Three hundred and two miles, 91 degrees, 47 events, 26 swimmers, two days. That all adds up to fourth place and two high point winners for the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder. The fourth swim meet of the season was held in Glendive this past weekend. Overall, the team struggled with the heat, but many swimmers still managed to improve their times in individual events. The Thunder also managed to claim high point status in two age groups. Katie Kaiser earned high point in the 13–14 year old girls with t...

  • Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder Hosts Swim Meet, Places Second

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 24, 2015

The Thunder hosted another successful swim meet this weekend, welcoming 268 swimmers from 10 communities to Glasgow. With 30 swimmers placing in several events, the Thunder claimed second place behind the hard to beat Sidney Tiger Sharks. The team had definite strong and consistent improvement from each swimmer in almost every event, and some strong performances from swimmers who competed for the first time this past weekend. "It's rewarding to see the kids improve so much each week," said head...

  • Thunder Places Second in Malta Invitational Meet

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 17, 2015

The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder achieved another strong finish at the Malta swim meet this past weekend. After placing third at the first meet of the season in Harlem two weeks ago, they moved up a notch and brought home a second-place trophy. The team doubled in size from last week as 24 swimmers attended the meet. Out of 76 event entries, Glasgow scored top three in 26 of them. The team struggled however, in their usually strong relays, with three out of the seven relays being disqualified....

  • Valley Bank Wins Minors Tourney

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 17, 2015

When I saw pictures of the Valley Bank minors team with their trophies, I had flashbacks. It seems like just yesterday my own daughter was playing baseball for Valley Bank and her team was celebrating their first-place win. The Cal Ripken minor league tournament was held this last weekend at Jeff Jurgens Field. Valley Bank eventually won the tournament, but they had to play Hi-Line Ford three times before it was over. They played their first game on Friday against McDonald's and outscored them...

  • Thunder Places Third At First Meet Of The Season

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 10, 2015

The small community of Harlem, Mont. has an oasis right in the middle of town, the city pool. This past weekend, they hosted the first swim meet of the season and the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder Swim Team was there to compete. Overall, the Thunder had a strong showing as 13 swimmers competed in a total of 43 events, which included three relays. The first meet is typically low-key and this one was no exception. There were several events in different age groups that had only one swimmer competing....

  • GHS All-Sports Banquet Resurrected

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Jun 3, 2015

It takes a village to raise a child. Or, in this case, it takes a community to produce outstanding athletes. Sponsored by the Scottie Booster Club, the GHS All-Sports Athletic Banquet was held Tuesday, May 26th in the St Raphael's Gymnasium. The banquet was resurrected by current GHS activity director, Brenner Flaten, who hosted the event. Keynote speaker was Jeff Graham from Belt, Mont. Graham teaches middle school and high school history, weight training, and K-12 P.E. He is the head coach for...

  • Scottie Boys Bring Home Third Place

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 27, 2015

Eight-hundred and thirty-eight miles, 22 athletes, seven coaches, two managers and one Scottie cruiser. That's just part of what it takes to attend a state track meet. Coach Tim Phillips and his crew of coaches and athletes made the trek across the state to Kalispell to do just that. They were followed sporadically by a caravan of family and friends hoping to cheer the Scotties on to victory. Former coach John Labonty spent both days at the meet as well – to the delight of most every athlete o...

  • Class C Meet Qualifies Athletes To State

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 20, 2015

Class C coaches wear many hats. They are coaches first, but also play the role of parent, counselor, referee, physical therapist, and more. Sometimes they have to fake it 'til they make it. There was a little of that this season for Ryen Falkenstern, of Nashua, and Lisa Beus, of Hinsdale. Falkenstern initially was going to be the track and field coach just for the lady Porcupines. He stepped up for the boys' team when things didn't work out with the prospective coach for them. This is Beus'...

  • Even Through the Wind and Rain, Scotties Go to State

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 20, 2015

We raise 'em right in Montana. There's no doubt in my mind. It was truly a miserable day at the North/East B divisional track meet on Saturday, but from the athletes to the volunteers, not a single "whine" was heard. If anyone was whining, it all stopped when the Glasgow boys and girls swept the meet and brought home the titles of divisional champs (the first time in school history that both boys and girls claimed the divisional title two years in a row). It was all smiles and hugs after that....

  • State Golfers Don't Place At The Top, But Show A Personal Best

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 20, 2015

Scottie girl golfers gained some wonderful experience last week at the state golf meet – including the part when they had 50-plus people watching them on the first tee box. At least that’s what Coach Dave Riggin thought was wonderful. “They’ve never experienced that before. The whole thing was great for the returning girls to experience,” said Riggin. “With two brand new girls and a second year golfer on the team this year, we will still have a young team next season.” As for their overall performance, the Scottie girls placed eleventh out...

  • Track Takes District By Storm

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 13, 2015

They showed up, they gave it their all and they walked away with respect and titles. Glasgow boys and girls dominated at the district track meet held in Wolf Point on Saturday, with both teams bringing home the title of district champs. Forty-three new personal records were accomplished, and the list of state qualifiers grew by three – girls 1600-meter relay, Chase Fossum in the 400-meter, and Luke Breigenzer in the 110-meter hurdles. The boys claimed the top spot - beating Wolf Point by 122 p...

  • Top Ten Show First Class Sportsmanship

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 6, 2015

It was a beautiful evening for a track meet. On Tuesday, Glasgow hosted the annual "Top Ten" track meet. The top ten meet was started in 1983 by Bob Farrell, Mark Yoakam and Norm Girard. Athletes qualify just by being in the top ten in their events based on the overall results in Eastern Montana. Tim Phillips, head coach for the Glasgow Scotties, explained that they want the kids to do their individual best so they don't typically have them compete in everything they qualify for. This means...

  • Wolf Point Track Meet Primes Athletes For District Next Weekend

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 6, 2015

The second track meet of the week for the Scotties was held in Wolf Point Saturday. Coach Tim Phillips decided not to run the kids in all events, keeping the meet low-key for the day, but it was a good time for the team to gain some experience on the track at Wolf Point because the District meet will be held there on Saturday – one week later. There was a computer system malfunction, so no results could be counted for state qualifying times – although there were a number of personal bests thr...

  • Girls Golfers Headed To State May 12

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|May 6, 2015

Scottie girl golfers achieved their goal at the divisional meet held in Wolf Point on Monday. “Our goal was not to be the fourth place team, so we achieved that,” Coach Dave Riggin said. All five girls on the team qualified for state - Lauren Runningen with a score of 149, Heidi Moon with 139, Amy Nelson with 122, Tamrah Pewitt with 108, and Makkell Baillargeon leading the girls with a score of 103. The team score for the girls was 472 – out-scoring Cut Bank by 16 points to secure third place and some hardware for GHS. Riggin explained that...

  • Scotties Take The Top This Weekend

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Apr 29, 2015

Glasgow boys and girls both came out on top in the team rankings at the Hinsdale Invitational track meet held at the Glasgow High School track this past weekend. The boys earned first place with a total point tally of 156 and the girls with a total of 199.33 points. "We're really proud of the kids. I think overall, we're seeing a ton of competitive athletes from Eastern Montana," Coach Tim Phillips said, reflecting on the day. "There are some really talented athletes from Class C, and it's alway...
