Each skater seemingly has a hand in the success of the game, and it shows. The girls started their trio of games in Watford City, N.D., and came away with a 9-2 win. Leading the scoring for Glasgow was GHS senior, Josey Uphaus with a hat trick and two assists. That same afternoon, the girls loaded up and headed to Crosby, N.D. • Case in Point

    Georgie Kulczyk, Soapbox Soliloquy|Dec 2, 2015

I mistakenly read Virgil Vaupel’s “column” in last week’s paper. At first, I only read about a third of it. I stopped reading because, to put it mildly, it made me angry. I seldom read Virgil’s writings because: 1. He makes little sense to me; 2. I don’t like his bigoted statements; 3. He irritates me; and 4. I think he deliberately writes things to get a rise out of people. I admit, I eventually finished reading his column, and this time, he succeeded in getting a rise out of me. There are multiple things that struck a nerve. Let’s just...

Although Mattfeldt is primarily skating on the high school team for the Ice Dawgs in Glasgow, he is also currently rostered with the Glacier Nationals, a junior league hockey team that has established their home ice in Havre, Mont. The Nationals (Natties) compete in the Frontier Division along with the Helena...

Kennedy Schmidt scored the remaining two goals with assists from Wixson and Alex Simensen. "The girls...

  • Festival of Trees Provides an "Easy Button" for the Holidays

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Nov 25, 2015

The Festival of Trees is a fundraising event for the Relay for Life, and is essentially an "easy button" for those looking to avoid the stress of the holidays. It's the only place in town where you can purchase a fully decorated tree or other holiday decorations and support a great cause at the same time. The 11th annual festival was held this past Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20 and 21, at the Elks. Friday evening began with a casual performance by the GHS swing choir and included a prime rib...

  • Separated at Birth?

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Nov 18, 2015

Located 1568 miles southeast from us is the community of Glasgow, Kentucky. That's not earth-shattering information, but there are a few similarities between our community and theirs that suggest we may be related on some level. Perhaps we're cousins. Located in south central Kentucky, Glasgow has a population of about 14,000 – that's according to Wikipedia. It is located in Barren County, and like our Glasgow, is the county seat. The stereotypical coal mines of Kentucky are located in the eastern part of the state, while Barren County consists...

  • GHS Library is Not the Library You Remember

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Nov 11, 2015

When you step into the library at Glasgow High School, you can tell immediately that it's different than the library you remember. For one thing, and likely the most noticeable, it's not quiet. It's not raucous by any means, but still, nobody is being shushed. The atmosphere is relaxed and inviting. Students and staff are scattered about the room – either in groups or in areas by themselves. Discussions are taking place and at times friends call out to each other across the room. In the short t...

  • Teacher in Residence

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Oct 28, 2015

Marcia McEachron has been inspiring young Glasgow artists for over 20 years, and she doesn't appear to be ready to quit. McEachron began coming to Glasgow as part of an artist in residence program in 1994, and each year since then, she has been invited to work with the third grade classes in Glasgow. With her help and supervision, the students have created their own art with pictures of animals, and third grade teacher Betty Jo Bense's favorite - self portraits. She typically spends a week with...

  • Coronation and Crawling Crowds: Homecoming in Glasgow

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Oct 7, 2015

Homecoming weekend in Glasgow is steeped in tradition. Scottie pride is unequaled. You could argue that point, but you wouldn't win. Preparations for homecoming started early in the week – earlier if you count float construction or collecting fuel for the bonfire. Businesses also start decorating their establishments – mostly to support the Scotties, but also with the hopes of being awarded best homecoming window display from Glasgow's Chamber of Commerce. The more intensive preparations sta...

  • Tucker Dees: A Friend in Need

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 30, 2015

It's been 12 years since Tucker Dees won his first fight against cancer. Now he's in the fight for round two. Dees was born in Glasgow in 1996 and was first diagnosed with cancer in 2003 at the age of six. At that time, he had to fight off three brain tumors, but he didn't have to fight alone. The community of Glasgow supported the family the best way they know how – with friendship and a benefit auction. In 2006, Dees and his family moved from Glasgow to Great Falls and eventually to the Billin...

  • Busted Knuckle Brewery

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 23, 2015

I had the pleasure of reviewing the Busted Knuckle Brewery with two of my good friends, Tanja Fransen and Megan Haddix. We met at the BKB just after 5 p.m. on a Thursday. One thing we didn't have to worry about was choosing a place to sit – the establishment was nearly full and there was only one table available. The place was hoppin' (pun intended). Although the exterior of the building is pretty unassuming, the interior is welcoming and comfortable. There are two separate areas inside. In o...

  • GHS Senior in the Running for National Merit Scholarship

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 16, 2015

The National Merit Scholarship Program honors individual students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Zach Miller, a GHS senior, has been announced as a semi-finalist and could advance as a finalist if certain requirements are fulfilled. What makes this accomplishment extraordinary, according to GHS principal Shawnda Zahara-Harris, is that only 52 of the approximate 16,000 semi-finalists are Montana students. Of those 52, only two are...

  • Pink Tractor a Hit at the NE Montana Fair

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 9, 2015

The Pink Tractor project was started two years ago by Northwest Farm Credit employees who volunteered 100 percent of the efforts with the sole purpose of raising awareness and money for cancer research for the communities and people whom it serves. The tractor was found and completely restored within 30 days so it could attend its first function in 2013. Since then, it has logged thousands of miles as it traveled across Montana, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Before the start of the demolition...

  • Area Youth Tours Europe, Represents Glasgow

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 2, 2015

According to Glasgow High School band director Brad Persinger, there's probably nothing better than traveling to Europe and playing music. Although he's never made a trip like that himself, Persinger didn't hesitate to recommend one of his students, Zach Miller, for the opportunity. Persinger submitted Miller's name to participate in "Northern Ambassadors of Music," a program which features musicians from Montana and North Dakota and is open to both high school and college aged students. "Zach...

  • Northeast Montana Relay for Life Surpasses Fundraising Goal

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Aug 19, 2015

I heard the festivities before I saw them. Walking into the Relay I heard singing, followed by applause from the crowd. The closer I got, I could see most everyone was gathered under the well-lit "free stage" area of the fairgrounds, and finishing her performance was Glasgow native Jessica Jimison Heier. To my right, I noticed a few attendees just finishing up a game of giant Jenga. The grandstands were well-lit and people were filtering in and out of the building. Scattered throughout the...

  • Sports, Summer Reflections

    Georgie Kulczyk, Soapbox Soliloquy|Aug 5, 2015

Two very important things in my life came to an end this past weekend: swim team and Reds baseball. I must admit, I'm more than a little thankful, but only because I'm tired. My son started his baseball career with T-ball and never looked back. I don't think he could love doing anything more. I enjoyed every minute I was able to watch him play. I especially enjoyed watching him play Cal Ripken baseball at the Jeff Jurgens Field. More than that though, I have watched the best group of young men g...

  • Glasgow Swimmers Ride the Wave to State Championship

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Aug 5, 2015

Victory is sweet – just ask any Glasgow Kiwanis swimmer. With just 29 swimmers, the Thunder brought home gold this past weekend from the state swim meet in Roundup, outscoring five other teams in their division. Not long into the first day of the meet, it was apparent that it was going to be a memorable weekend. The powerhouse relay team of Katie Kaiser, Khloe Krumwiede, Jordan Kulczyk, and DJ Rasmusan proved they were a force to be reckoned with, winning gold in the 200m freestyle relay. The 1...
