The Glasgow school board met for their regular meeting Sept. 21, with all trustees attending. During the public comment period, after a brief introduction from GMS Principal Mike Zoanni, Bryon Gustafson spoke to the trustees. Gustafson identified himself as the youth pastor at the Evangelical Church and explained that because he is active with the community youth and he often goes to the middle school and has lunch with the kids, he wanted to introduce himself to the board. In a coordinated effort with the Valley County Friends of the Library, Courier editor James Walling and contributor Ginevra Kirkland selected Frazer to launch a new literacy project this past week. Boxcar Road Books is aimed at serving Greater Valley County, which, according to Walling, "lacks even a single bookstore." Several teams braved less than ideal conditions to compete at the GHS cross country invitational held in Fort Peck Sept. 24. The Scottie boys and girls swept the meet, with Emily Kolstad leading the way for the girls and Ellis McKean for the boys. The North Country Lady Mavericks were defeated by the Scobey Lady Spartans (25-16, 25-21, 25-20) in three home games held Sept. 24. Statistically, the teams were comparable for the evening, except in digs. The Lady Spartans recorded 34 compared to the Ladys Mavericks' 14. The Scotties suited up for their 2016 homecoming game vs. the Big Timber Sheepherders on Sept. 16. Before the evening was over, the cheerleaders were worn out from doing jumping jacks, and the cannon had nearly depleted the supply of gun powder in Valley County. The Scotties faced the Baker Spartans in a hard-hitting game of football Sept. 9, giving the second ranked team a run for their money. The Scotties struggled to find their footing in the first quarter of the game. Defensively, they failed to deny the Spartans, who scored two touchdowns and had one successful two-point conversion. A 41-year old Lakewood, Washington man, Justin Hanson, has been charged in Valley County with criminal possession of dangerous drugs, and is being held in the Valley County jail. The Montana Highway Patrol (MHP) executed a traffic stop Sept. 5 on Highway 2 near Frazer for an illegal pass. The vehicle was a rental vehicle out of Washington state, and was driven by Hanson. The Scottie runners competed at the Billings Invitational held Sept. 2. With nearly 30 teams in attendance and hundreds of runners, the Scotties represented well. The varsity boys team had a strong showing, placing in the upper third of the teams overall with a total score of 297, while the girls placed better than just about half of the teams that came to compete with a total score of 352. It was a long night for the Scotties, but productive nonetheless. The Scotties traveled to Glendive on Sept. 2 for their second away-game of the season, and came home with the win. In a battle of two-point conversions, safeties, fumbles and penalties, the Scotties prevailed. Valley County Attorney Dylan Jensen filed amended charges against 22-year-old Kain Mitchell Hirsch-Hall in district court on Monday, Aug. 15. Hirsch-Hall has been charged with one count of felony sexual assault and one count of felony sexual intercourse without consent. Initial charges against Hirsch-Hall included three separate counts of sexual crimes against two separate victims, both who were less than 12-years-old at the time of the alleged incidents. The Jeff Jurgens Memorial Youth Basketball Tournament Scholarship Committee has awarded four $1500 scholarships to the following students: Delaney Beil, daughter of Keith and Myla Beil A 2016 graduate of Hinsdale High School, Delaney Beil will be attending MSU – Northern to pursue a degree in nursing. At the regularly-scheduled Glasgow School Board meeting held Aug. 17, the district’s trustees were questioned about the hiring process for the position of head boys basketball coach. When the time came for the board to approve hires as recommended by the school’s activity director, Brenner Flaten, one of which was to hire Norm Braaten as the head boys basketball coach, one of the applicants for the position asked to be heard. The annual Fort Peck Triathlon is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 27. Organizers have decided to change things a bit this year with a new venue and a new route for runners. The new location for the event will be at the Flat Lake boat ramp, and the running portion will take participants over the Fort Peck Dam and the Spillway. With the new route, organizers anticipate that participants will be able to enjoy great scenery changes during the race. In a continuing legal battle over money, Judge John C. McKeon heard arguments in an ongoing restitution case against the Dan Burns Estate. Burns was convicted of felony sexual abuse of children in 2009, and died in prison in 2014. Following his death, Maugeen McGrath-Stark filed a civil suit against the estate on behalf of her child seeking payment of court-ordered restitution. The Glasgow Civic Center was the setting for a three-day wrestling camp presented by some high-caliber clinicians. The camp was held Aug. 7-9, and boasted 77 attendees. Mike Zadick and Derek St. John, both assistant coaches at Virginia Tech, led the camp with help from Billings West's head coach Jeremy Hernandez, as well as GHS coaches and other Montana High School coaches. At a meeting held July 19, the Nashua School Board made a commitment to meet weekly until the start of the school year. The recently hired superintendent, Bill Colter, stressed the importance of moving forward and getting things done. From one corner of the state to the another, the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder traveled nearly 500 miles to Hamilton for the state swim meet July 30 and 31. The Glasgow/Fort Peck chapter of Walleyes Unlimited held their annual Women's Walleye Tournament Saturday, July 30 on Fort Peck Lake. Taking home the top prize of $1000 were Avis McDowell and Misty Williams of Froid with a total weight of 35.54 pounds caught. The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team finished their eighth weekend of competition July 23 and 24 in Malta, where the divisional swim meet was held. With 370 swimmers from ten veteran teams, the competition was tough. Swimmers must place in the top 12 of their events just to qualify for state competition. It was a tough "building" year for the 2016 Reds', and their season came to a disappointing end at the district tournament in Billings after just two games. The first game for the Reds was held Thursday afternoon, July 21, with Glasgow facing the Sidney Patriots on the diamond.
