They had to work for it, at times battling to gain an advantage as the Indians dished out a steady stream of defense against the Scottie shooters.     The Nashua Porcupines and the Nashua-Opheim Rivals faced the Dodson Coyotes in two home games Dec. 20. Nashua 48, Dodson 38 Starting the game for the Porcupines were: Dalton Kautz, Gavin Adkins, Chase Williams, Dylan Sanner and Sawyer Sibley. Coming off the bench to contribute were Cassidy Greene and Gunner Greene. The Nashua boys earned the win, but the game definitely wasn't won at the free throw line.     Glasgow 5, Great Falls 5 The first of two games on the road for the Bantam Ice Dawgs, held Dec. 10, resulted in a 5-5 tie. Glasgow easily dominated offensively, out-shooting the Americans 52-15. Ike Braaten was the first to find the back of the net with a goal just minutes into the first period and the assist going to Michael Uphues.     The Lady Scotties are on a roll, but some of their toughest opponents are still ahead. In two non-conference games against Sidney (Dec. 15) and North Country (Dec. 17), the girls extended their winning streak to 4-0.   • Glasgow Grapplers Have Great Showing in Great Falls

    After a stop in Ft. Benton as a warm-up, the Scottie grapplers spent Dec. 16 and 17 in Great Falls at the CMR Holiday Classic Wrestling Tournament. The tournament draws teams from all over Montana and this year was set to host 36 teams, although some were unable to make the trip due to weather conditions. Glasgow placed seventh out of 34 teams.     The 21st annual Scottie Wrestling Invitational was held Dec. 10 at GHS. Glasgow hosted 19 other teams for the event, and with four wrestling mats being utilized throughout the day, Scottie Gymnasium was buzzing with activity. With hundreds of competitors at the event, there was a continual rotation of matches taking place at all times. It was organized chaos.     The Sidney Invitational wrestling meet held Dec. 2 and 3 was a tough one, with 26 teams from Montana and surrounding states competing in the event. Wrestling for the Scotties at the varsity level were: Gabe Hallock, Matt Reyling, Kaden Zimmerman, Oden Hallock, Cale Swanson and Tony Kaiser.     The 2016-2017 Ice Dawg hockey season kicked off with the 14U girls traveling to Miles City Nov. 12, the high school boys traveling for games against Butte and Great Falls Nov. 12-13, and the bantams hosting games at the Valley Event Center Nov. 11 and 12.     As the fall sports season transitions into the winter sports season, the Courier looks back at the successes of our Valley County athletes. As August came to an end, the GHS Student Council sponsored their second annual color run, which drew 165 participants. The color run benefitted the Wounded Warrior Project.     GHS senior Benji Phillips has signed a letter of intent to compete as a javelin thrower for the North Dakota State University (NDSU) Bison. Head coach Don Larson and associate head coach Justin St. Clair announced the recruitment Nov. 3 and GHS hosted a signing ceremony Nov. 9. Phillips won the Montana Class B state championship in the javelin as a junior in 2016, and he took second as a sophomore and fourth as a freshman in the event.   • Hallock Makes His Mark at Monster Match

    Kyler Hallock has been wrestling since he was three years old when he started in the AAU program. Hallock is now 12 years old and bringing home hardware from some elite events.     The Scotties put on quite a show in Malta Oct. 21. Facing the rival Malta Mustangs on their home turf can be daunting, but the Scotties left it all on the field in an exhilarating win for the title of 2B conference champions.     The Scottie cross country runners crossed the Hi-Line to compete at the state meet in Kalispell on Oct. 22.   • Strand Apologizes per Agreement

    As a condition of a sentence handed down in district court earlier this year, Mary Strand has submitted a letter of apology to the Glasgow Courier. Strand was sentenced June 20, 2016 in Valley County District Court on five counts of felony theft. (See Strand Appears in Court, Glasgow Courier, June 22, 2016.) In addition to being sentenced to 90 days in the Valley County jail, Strand was also ordered to submit a letter of apology addressed to the community to be printed in the Courier, as well as an oral apology to be broadcast on local radio.... Full story

  • School Board Discusses Substitute Teacher Pay Program

    The Glasgow school board met in regular session on Oct. 12. The meeting was held at the Irle School following a meal for the trustees. Benji Phillips began the meeting with a student report and discussed projects and events that FCCLA, Honor Society, G-Club and Key Club are all working on or have participated in recently.     The Glasgow cross country team was in Plentywood Oct. 15 for the last regular season meet of 2016. The Scotties swept the meet with both the boys and girls taking the number one spot.   • Blake Receives Suspended Sentence for Sex Crime

    A Glasgow man was sentenced in Valley County District Court on Oct. 4 for one count of felony incest. With a handful of supporters seated behind him in the courtroom, Martin Blake, 40, appeared before Judge John C. McKeon. Following two hours of testimony and arguments, Judge McKeon sentenced Blake to 30 years in the Montana prison system, with all 30 years suspended.     Only the die-hard parents and fans were seated in the bleachers for the Scotties' Oct. 7 game against the Harlem Wildcats.
