The Glasgow Reds opened their season with two games against the Miles City Mavericks on Mother's Day, May 14. Miles City 9, Glasgow 3 M. The Scottie sluggers notched two more wins this past weekend, bringing them to 17-1 overall for the season. On May 5, Glasgow hosted the class A Sidney Eagles and finished with an 8-1 win. The Scotties attacked offensively right off the bat, and defensively denied the Lady Eagles any runs until the final inning. The Scottie golf team was in Harlem May 5, and the boys took the top spot with 379 points. Leading the way was Oden Hallock, who placed third overall individually with 93 points. Blaine Myrick and Cody Ross shared fourth and fifth place with a 93, and Ike Braaten finished just behind them with 96. Kaden Fossum shot a 105. The Scottie track team has been busy, with three separate meets held in the last week. The competitions began with the top ten meet in Glasgow on May 2. With just weeks left in the 2017 season, the Glasgow track team continues to improve. At the Belt-Fairfield Invitational meet held in Great Falls April 29, 22 Scotties achieved personal bests. Following a home game against Glendive April 25, the Lady Scotties traveled to Great Falls for a two-day tournament April 28 and 29. Although the girls got off to a slow start against Glendive, they pulled it together for the 5-1 victory in seven innings. Both teams battled to gain ground against the other, but the game remained scoreless for four full innings. The Scottie golfers hosted their home meet at Sunnyside Golf Course on April 28, then traveled to Plentywood April 29 for a second day of competition. The Scottie boys grabbed the title for their own meet with a score of 357. Blaine Myrick led his team to the win with an 83, followed by Ike Braaten in fourth with an 89. The Scottie track team traveled to Sidney April 22 for one of their largest meets of the season. With hundreds of athletes representing several teams, it was a long day of competition. Other area teams competing at the meet were the Hinsdale Raiders, the Frazer Bearcubs and the Nashua Porcupines. It was definitely a day for Glasgow's distance runners. The Lady Scotties are on a roll. With senior Tyra Johnson as the team's ace pitcher and a lineup filled with hot bats, they appear to be unbeatable. The Scottie golfers hit the greens in Wolf Point for the Poplar Invitational April 18, then returned April 21 for the Wolf Point Invitational. The boys improved their placing from second-place to first-place with the extra days of practice, while the girls maintained their placing of second place for both meets. Hordes of competitors and volunteers converged on Scottie Field for the annual qualifier meet on April 17. Despite strong, gusty winds and a bone-chilling high temperature of 55 degrees, several athletes still managed to hit state-qualifying marks. For the Scotties, Benji Phillips bested the qualifying standard in the long jump by just over three inches. The Scotties won two consecutive games last week to start off their 2017 season. The team first traveled to Glendive April 6 to take on the Lady Red Devils, and came home with the 11-2 win. The Scotties had 11 runs off 16 hits and only allowed 8 hits for Glendive. The Scottie tracksters competed in three separate meets this past week. First, they traveled to Havre for the Cal Wearley Invitational on April 5. The boys placed second behind a strong Fairfield team, and the girls finished fourth overall behind Fort Benton, Havre and Chinook. Then, on April 8, most of the team made the trek to Baker with a few Scotties staying behind to compete at the Nashua Invitational in Glasgow. The Nashua Porcupines hosted 14 teams at their track meet in Glasgow on April 8. It was a productive day for Valley County athletes, with several qualifying for state and three separate school records falling. Boys high-point scorer was Riley Linder of Scobey with 38 points. The first track meet of the season drew 27 teams (215 boys and 145 girls) to Scottie Field, including one competitor from Riverton, Wyo. The meet was held April 1, and as usual, several proms were scheduled for the evening. That's only significant because several athletes were only partially focused on the competition for the day, and many of them left early for various appointments. The Glasgow Highlanders traveled to Billings March 25 and 26 for the Montana Open. The club boasted the tenth-largest team at the event with 30 wrestlers competing. I recently lost part of my identity. I am no longer the mother of a high school basketball player. The Valley Event Center has another championship banner to hang in the rafters. The 2017 MAHA State Bantam Tournament was held in Glasgow March 10-12, and the Ice Dawgs captured the first ever Bantam championship for Hi-Line Youth Hockey. Glasgow finished the weekend undefeated, beating teams from Helena, Butte, Great Falls and Havre, then defeating Havre for a second time in the Sunday afternoon chipper. The annual Hi-Line Skating Showcase was held March 4 at the Valley Event Center. This year's theme was "Holidays on Ice" and featured a mixture of solo skates, duets, and group performances. Beginning and ending with group presentations, the afternoon was a recital of skills learned by the program's students. The Frazer Bearcubs were underestimated by many during the 2016-2017 basketball season. Judging by the sea of columbia blue present at their games, there were also many that knew how special they were. Of the eight teams competing in the Northern B Divisional Girls Basketball Tournament, the Lady Scotties had as much of a chance as any to advance to the state tournament in Billings.
