The Glasgow Reds faced the Scobey Blues in two games last week. The Reds hosted the Blues in the first game at Bill Connors Field in Glasgow on June 27, and improved their overall record to 9-16 with an 11-1 win. Glasgow 11, Scobey 1 Glasgow claimed the lead early and maintained the upper-hand throughout the game. Scobey denied a shut-out, however, with a run in the top of the sixth inning. John Hahn Field in Fort Peck was the setting for the 50th annual softball tournament by the same name. Campers and tents of all shapes and sizes were set up in home-run territory of the field, while lawn chairs filled with spectators and coolers filled with beverages were scattered along the fence line. The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder were in Malta for a two-day meet July 1 and 2. The team placed ninth overall, with some strong performances throughout the event. Leading the way with first place finishes were Katie Kaiser, who earned high-point honors in her age group for the second week in a row, and Raelee Dowden. On June 29, the Reds hosted the Billings Blue Jays in a double-header at Bill Connors Field. Glasgow fell to the Blue Jays in the first game by two runs, but finished the evening with a redeeming 18-8 win in the second contest. The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team hosted their home meet June 24 and 25, and finished fourth overall out of 10 competitive teams. Three perennial powerhouse teams, Sidney, Lewistown and Scobey, placed in the top three. Head coach Nicole Arnold noted that despite finishing out of the top three, the Thunder had a strong showing at the meet. The Glasgow Reds were all warmed up from a four-day tournament in Lewistown over the weekend when they faced the Sidney Patriots in a pair of home games June 20. Tri-County Cardinals 4, Reds 9 The Glasgow Reds spent another week on the road as they competed in the Harold Gjerde Memorial Tournament in Lewistown. Eight teams participated in the tournament, which was held June 15-18. The Reds prevailed in two of their five games, with wins over the Tri-County Cardinals and the Scobey Blues. The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder competed at their second meet of the season in Chinook this past weekend. The two-day meet was held June 16 and 17. A skeleton crew of 10 swimmers represented the Thunder and the team placed ninth overall. Senior swimmer Katie Kaiser led the Thunder with two first-place finishes and one second-place finish. Chosen for the GKST Athlete of the Meet was 12-year-old Haylly Turner, who is a second-year swimmer for the Thunder. A four-day volleyball camp was held at GHS June 12-15, and was attended by nearly 100 campers. Glasgow's head volleyball coach, Lori Dailey, along with assistants Somer Hoerster and Natalie Hopstad, welcomed the campers to Scottie Gymnasium for skills instruction, laughs, and a very competitive playing atmosphere. The 7th Annual Aaron "Chappy" Chatten Memorial Co-ed Softball Tournament was held in Fort Peck June 17 and 18. Eleven teams played twenty-one games on John Hahn Field, and when it was all said and done, The Out Crowd from Miles City emerged as champions. They also produced two MVPs of the tournament, with Sarah VanCleave recognized as the female MVP and Conner Brown as the male MVP. Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team (GKST) had twenty-seven swimmers compete in their first meet of the season, June 10 and 11. The meet was held in Scobey and the Thunder came home with a fourth-place overall finish. The Glasgow Reds put in four days of baseball over the weekend and came home with three wins. The Northstars Memorial Tournament was held in Havre June 8-11. In their first of four games, the Reds faced the hometown Havre Northstars Thursday evening. Cade Myrick worked on the mound for all four innings of the game and earned the win for the Reds. Glasgow High School held their annual awards banquet May 30, in St. Raphael's gymnasium and featured 1998 GHS graduate Kami Malnaa. According to GHS activities director Brenner Flaten, Malnaa was a three-sport standout during her time at GHS, leading the Scotties to two state volleyball championships and a runner-up finish at the 1997 State B Basketball tournament, where she garnered tournament MVP honors. Jerry and Nate Molstad added a fifth Catfish Classic title to their resume on June 3, beating out 79 other teams. The pair weighed in with a total 40.16 pounds of catfish, including an 11.15-pound hog caught by the younger Molstad that earned the "Big Whiskers" award. In addition to this season's win, the father-son duo won the event in 2007, back-to-back in 2009-2010, and in 2013. The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team (GKST) a.ka. "The Thunder" is ready for another season in the sun. Prior to even getting in the water, swim team representatives were on hand to give the city pool its annual makeover. John Kulczyk, Ann Kulczyk, Melani Vandall and Michelle Huntsman, all parents of Thunder swimmers, spent one weekend prepping the pool to be filled. The Scottie track and field squad were in Butte for the Class AA and B meet on May 25, 26 and 27. The Scotties left town at 6 a.m. Thursday morning and reached their destination just before 3 p.m. "That's a lot of time on the bus," said head coach Tim Phillips. Expectations for the Scottie Softball team were high. The girls practically sailed through their regular season with most of their games ending in mercy rule scores. They traveled to Frenchtown for the state tournament May 25-27 with a state title in their sights, and as far as any Scottie fans were concerned, they were the favorites to win it all. Area Class C athletes competed in their final meet of the season May 26 and 27 in Laurel. The meet was originally scheduled to be held in Missoula, but was moved to Laurel following concerns that the venue would not be ready in time. The move was likely beneficial to our northeastern Montana competitors, with travel time cut in half and lower altitude levels. Glasgow hosted the Northern B Divisional track meet on May 20, with 11 teams showing up to compete. Although there were some disappointed Scotties, the team as a whole had a super day of competition. Head coach Tim Phillips was pleased with both the boys and girls. "I don't think anybody had a bad day," he said. It was another impressive display of talent, athleticism and endurance at the Eastern BC Softball Tournament held in Glasgow May 18, 19 and 20. Sullivan Park swelled with fans and players looking for some solid entertainment during the two-day tournament, and the Scotties didn't disappoint. The Scottie golfers traveled to Shelby for the State B golf meet last week. The meet was originally scheduled to run May 16 and 17, but in typical Montana fashion, weather interrupted the event and the second day of competition was postponed until May 18. Making the trip for the Scotties were: Blaine Myrick, Ike Braaten, Kaden Fossum, Oden Hallock and Cody Ross for the boys, Heidi Moon, Lexie Pehlke, Fallon Larsen and Taylor Palm for the girls. The 2017 District 3C track meet was held May 13 in conjunction with the District 2B meet. Although there was no touching the Scobey teams, Valley County was well represented by area athletes. The Nashua boys brought home second-place honors with most of the team advancing to the district tournament. The Glasgow Reds opened their season with two games against the Miles City Mavericks on Mother's Day, May 14. Miles City 9, Glasgow 3 M. City 1 0 6 1 0 1 0 - 9 Glasgow 0 0 1 0 2 0 0 -3 In their first game, the Reds fell to the Mavericks 9-3. Miles City claimed the lead early with a first-inning double that brought in one run.
