The Scottie cross country teams competed in two separate meets this last week. The team first traveled to Culbertson Sept. 26, then hosted their own meet in Fort Peck Sept. 30. In Culbertson, Ali Cunningham, who is a sophomore for the Scotties, led the girls with her second-place finish overall, and Ellis McKean finished first overall for the boys. The Scottie cross country team competed in two separate meets this past week. On Sept. 19, the squad traveled to Clark's Hill, just south of the Old Indian Highway, for an early evening race. The course for the Frazer meet is scenic and challenging as it is set near the Missouri River and features some demanding hills. On Sept. 23, the team was in Havre for the Blue Pony Invitational. Following two fairly intense competitions held in Williston and Billings, the Scottie cross country team was in Malta for a more low-key race on Sept. 9. The course, which was held at the golf course, consisted mostly of moderate rolling hills with stretches of even path for the runners to navigate. Likely the most difficult part of the course for the competitors was the slight incline just before the finish line. The Scottie cross country team competed in their second big meet of the season Sept. 1 at the Billings Invitational. The Scottie boys placed very well overall, coming in 6th out of 23 teams. Ellis McKean led the team with his 14th-place finish and a time of 17:28.11, while Ike Braaten finished just behind him in 15th-place with a time of 17:28.34. The Scotties suffered a huge 54-0 loss in a recent pickup game against Whitehall. The game, which was held at Naranche Stadium in Butte on Sept. 1, was scheduled following the demise of Poplar's football program for the season. Glasgow's head coach, Greg Liebelt said of the disappointing loss, "We looked and played like a younger, inexperienced team - with seven new starters - playing our first game against a veteran semifinal team from last season with eight returning starters, without a doubt." A change of plea hearing for Jay Witkowski was held in the Valley County Courthouse on Aug. 16. Those attending the hearing were required to submit to security screening, performed by the Valley County Sheriff’s Department, prior to entering the courtroom. The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder competed in their final meet of the year in Lewistown August 5 and 6. The team fell short of earning any hardware, but 16 of the 27 attending athletes advanced to finals the second day of the meet and several swimmers placed in the top twelve of their events. Notably, three Thunder swimmers earned gold medals and state champion status. The combined efforts of Milk River Motorsports (MRM) and 28 team entries made for a fun demolition derby at the Northeast Montana Fair August 3. Demolition derbys are a popular event along the hi-line this time of year. Thursday night's show was no exception as spectators packed the stands to take in the action-packed show. The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team will be facing some tough competition at the upcoming state swim meet. The Thunder will be competing in the Class A division against Glendive, Columbia Falls, Conrad and Big Sandy. Head coach Nicole Arnold explained that classifications are based on the amount of points scored during the divisional meet. The Glasgow Reds' season came to an end at the district tournament in Miles City this past weekend. The tournament began for the boys on July 20 with a game against the hosting Mavericks, and ended on July 22 with a loss to the Dodgers out of Laurel. The Reds did knock Glendive out of the tournament on Saturday morning with an 8-7 win. The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team was represented by just one dozen swimmers this past weekend at the Roundup Invitational. The final regular-season meet was held July 22 and 23, and the team placed ninth overall with 276 points. Three Thunder swimmers came home with high-point trophies for their performances at the meet. It's hard to say who was more excited for the first-ever wrestling camp held in Frazer. The campers seemed to be wound up just because they were having fun. The coaches more so because they were witnessing history. "This is the first time these gym floors have ever been covered in wrestling mats," explained Frazer's head wrestling coach Buck Turcotte. The Reds faced the Billings Cardinals in two games at home on July 12, and sent them away with two losses. Reds 4, Billings Cardinals 2 Glasgow defeated the Cardinals by just two runs in their first match-up of the day. The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team took 21 athletes to Glendive July 15 and 16. Despite very hot temperatures throughout the meet, the team finished in fifth place, and several swimmers contributed with solid performances. Leading the team with first- place finishes were Abigail Kulczyk in the 50m breaststroke, Dalton Sand in all three of his events, Bergen Miller in the 100m breaststroke, Zavier Urbin in the 100m backstroke, and Trevor Johnson, who also finished first in all three of his events.... The 2017 Montana Governor's Cup Youth Fishing Tournament was held at the Kiwanis Park fishing ponds in Fort Peck on July 8. Fishing began at 8:30 a.m. with 94 kids participating, and 89 fish were reeled in by the tournament end. The effective bait was provided by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, and Scheels of Billings provided tackle boxes to each participant. Former Glasgow Reds and standout Scottie athlete Keil Krumwiede, who graduated from GHS in 2015, has committed to play college baseball at the University of Nebraska – Omaha. The Glasgow Reds faced the Scobey Blues in two games last week. The Reds hosted the Blues in the first game at Bill Connors Field in Glasgow on June 27, and improved their overall record to 9-16 with an 11-1 win. John Hahn Field in Fort Peck was the setting for the 50th annual softball tournament by the same name. Campers and tents of all shapes and sizes were set up in home-run territory of the field, while lawn chairs filled with spectators and coolers filled with beverages were scattered along the fence line.
