  • Sportsmanship

    Georgie Kulczyk, Soapbox Soliloquy|Nov 8, 2017

Following the scandalous sanctioning of the GHS volleyball team by MHSA (see MHSA Sanctions GHS Volleyball Program), it has become clear to me that sportsmanship – even at the highest level of competition – is declining. Specifically, it seems that people feel justified in being nasty because Glasgow was disciplined for a rules violation. Last week, I shared some thoughts about the violation. Let me reiterate and maybe expand on some of those thoughts, just so it’s clear where I stand. *In no way do I condone “cheating.” I’m not necessarily opp...

  • Scottie Volleyball

    Georgie Kulczyk, Soapbox Soliloquy|Nov 1, 2017

The biggest sports news this week, for me, is that the Lady Scottie volleyball team lost their district title due to a violation of a Montana High School Association (MHSA) rule. Although I received the information in plenty of time to adjust the content of my section this week, I chose not to make any changes in what I had already prepared. The bottom line: The girls deserve recognition. MHSA is the entity that governs high school interscholastic activities in Montana. According to their website, their purpose is to ensure that...

  • Sweet Success: Scottie Boys Stride to Second Place

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Oct 25, 2017

The Scottie cross country team closed out the 2017 season with heart and hardware. The state meet was held in Helena on Oct. 21, and the Scotties did not disappoint. It was the second time in just a few weeks that Glasgow competed on the same course, and coach Rod Karst felt the team used the experience to their benefit. "Their performance on Saturday was so much stronger than what we showed in Helena two weeks ago," he said. "They learned a lot going to the 7 of 7 meet, and used that to make... Full story

  • Another Sweep for Scottie XC

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Oct 18, 2017

The Glasgow cross country team wrapped up their regular season with both the girls and boys winning at Plentywood Oct.14. With the state competition on the horizon, the Scotties seem to be ready to secure some hardware for the GHS trophy case. Qualifying for the trip to Helena are: Emily Kolstad, Ali Cunningham, Alaina Sallee, Brooke Westby, Katie Kaiser, Lauren Padden, Mattea Piersak, Alexus Nistler (alternate), Ellis McKean, Ike Braaten, Merlin McKean, Wilson Overby, Jacob Meiers, Colin Jamba,... Full story

  • Scottie Runners Test State Venue in Helena

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Oct 11, 2017

The Scotties competed in two meets last week. First, the squad was in Helena Oct. 5 to get a preview of the course they will be running at the state competion. The Capital City 7 of 7 Invitational utilizes a different format than most meets, with seven separate, consecutive races held on the course. Each participating team was represented by their top seven boys and top seven girls, and the races began with the runners ranked seventh on each team. The day came to an end with the top-ranked... Full story

  • Scotties Host XC Meet In Fort Peck

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Oct 4, 2017

The Scottie cross country teams competed in two separate meets this last week. The team first traveled to Culbertson Sept. 26, then hosted their own meet in Fort Peck Sept. 30. In Culbertson, Ali Cunningham, who is a sophomore for the Scotties, led the girls with her second-place finish overall, and Ellis McKean finished first overall for the boys. For their home meet, the Scottie boys easily won the meet with 48 points. The girls, short a few runners, were unable to record any point as a team... Full story

  • Scottie XC Races at Frazer, Havre

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 27, 2017

The Scottie cross country team competed in two separate meets this past week. On Sept. 19, the squad traveled to Clark's Hill, just south of the Old Indian Highway, for an early evening race. The course for the Frazer meet is scenic and challenging as it is set near the Missouri River and features some demanding hills. On Sept. 23, the team was in Havre for the Blue Pony Invitational. The race for this meet is held at the MSU-Northern campus and is comparably less strenuous than the Frazer... Full story

  • XC Boys Win Malta Meet With Ease

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 13, 2017

Following two fairly intense competitions held in Williston and Billings, the Scottie cross country team was in Malta for a more low-key race on Sept. 9. The course, which was held at the golf course, consisted mostly of moderate rolling hills with stretches of even path for the runners to navigate. Likely the most difficult part of the course for the competitors was the slight incline just before the finish line. The varsity boys easily defeated their competition, scoring 34 points to win the... Full story

  • Scotties Shut Out by Whitehall

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Sep 6, 2017

The Scotties suffered a huge 54-0 loss in a recent pickup game against Whitehall. The game, which was held at Naranche Stadium in Butte on Sept. 1, was scheduled following the demise of Poplar's football program for the season. Glasgow's head coach, Greg Liebelt said of the disappointing loss, "We looked and played like a younger, inexperienced team - with seven new starters - playing our first game against a veteran semifinal team from last season with eight returning starters, without a doubt." Liebelt also noted that it's difficult to compet... Full story

  • Bailing Out Valley View

    Georgie Kulczyk, Soapbox Souliquy|Aug 30, 2017

Should the taxpayers support Valley View Home financially, or no? There have been some passionate and definitive statements regarding the topic. I was employed at Valley View Home for 27 years. I can assure you that this “fool” has first-hand knowledge of what happened there in recent years. I didn’t have to rely on what others told me because I was there. I experienced it. I can also assure you that none of the information that was fed to me came from any member of the board. They were noticeably absent in my final years of employment. That...

The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder competed in their final meet of the year in Lewistown August 5 and 6. • Twelve Men Entered, One Man Remained

    Georgie Kulczyk, The Courier|Aug 9, 2017

The combined efforts of Milk River Motorsports (MRM) and 28 team entries made for a fun demolition derby at the Northeast Montana Fair August 3. Demolition derbys are a popular event along the hi-line this time of year. Thursday night's show was no exception as spectators packed the stands to take in the action-packed show. Prior to the derby, several area women were driven into the arena and honored as they represented many "tough enough to wear pink" breast cancer survivors. The main event of... Full story

It's hard to say who was more excited for the first-ever wrestling camp held in Frazer. The campers seemed to be wound up just because they were having fun. The coaches more so because they were witnessing history. "This is the first time these gym floors have ever been covered in wrestling mats," explained Frazer's head wrestling coach Buck Turcotte. "Dean Blount has been here for 40 years and he said he's never seen it." The camp was held July 18 and 19, and featured members of the Eastern... Full story
