The Glasgow Squirt Ice Dawgs traveled to Sidney for a three-day tournament Dec. 15-17. Despite some minor obstacles, the Squirts came home with third-place hardware. According to coach Carin Barnett, because of the way the brackets were set up, Glasgow was the only team that had to play an extra game. Additionally, the Ice Dawgs had the smallest roster at the tournament and had to compete against teams with three to four lines. In game number one against Watford City White on Dec. 15, Glasgow... The 14U Ice Dawgs had a successful opening weekend in Kalispell Nov. 17-19. They played four games and earned four wins – three of them shut-outs for goalie Elizabeth Nyquist. The games were held at Woodland Ice Center, an outdoor rink in Kalispell. The rink is almost the perfect setting for hockey games, with tall trees creating a canopy of sorts over the ice that amplifies the sound of skates on the ice and pucks hitting the boards. It is especially magical at night and is a favorite venue f... Full story
GEORGIE KULCZYK THE COURIER The high school Ice Dawg hockey team was in Great Falls for two games Nov. 18 and 19. The boys recorded two wins against the Americans, with one shut out for goalie Casey Mattfeldt. The pair of games began on Saturday afternoon with a 7-0 win for Glasgow, and finished Sunday morning with a second win 6-2. In Saturday's game, Glasgow's defense held the Americans at bay, allowing only 15 shots on goal for Mattfeldt to save. In comparison, Glasgow's offense recorded 41 attempts on their opponent's net. GEORGIE KULCZYK THE COURIER The Squirt Ice Dawgs hit the road to Helena Nov. 18 and 19, and claimed two wins. While the first game against the Bighorns was a runaway for Glasgow (17-0), the second game was much more balanced (5-2). Jacob Potter earned a shut-out with Glasgow's first win against the Bighorns, stopping 10 of 10 attempts on his net. The Ice Dawgs took more shots at their opponent's net, scoring 17 of their 39 attempts. Leading the way in scoring was Bode Barnett with six goals. Als... Full story
The Bantam Ice Dawgs opened their season with two home games against the Billings Jr. Bulls Nov. 11 and 12. With a roster of nine skaters vs. a roster of 18, Glasgow had a bit of a battle on their hands, and they were unable to get a win for the weekend. Although the Ice Dawgs out-shot their opponents in both games, they had less success hitting the back of the net to score. Scoring one goal in each period, Billings blanked Glasgow in the first contest on Saturday night 3-0. Goalie Aidin... Full story
Following the scandalous sanctioning of the GHS volleyball team by MHSA (see MHSA Sanctions GHS Volleyball Program), it has become clear to me that sportsmanship – even at the highest level of competition – is declining. Specifically, it seems that people feel justified in being nasty because Glasgow was disciplined for a rules violation. Last week, I shared some thoughts about the violation. Let me reiterate and maybe expand on some of those thoughts, just so it’s clear where I stand. *In no way do I condone “cheating.” I’m not necessarily opp...
The biggest sports news this week, for me, is that the Lady Scottie volleyball team lost their district title due to a violation of a Montana High School Association (MHSA) rule. Although I received the information in plenty of time to adjust the content of my section this week, I chose not to make any changes in what I had already prepared. The bottom line: The girls deserve recognition. MHSA is the entity that governs high school interscholastic activities in Montana. According to their website, their purpose is to ensure that...
The Scottie cross country team closed out the 2017 season with heart and hardware. The state meet was held in Helena on Oct. 21, and the Scotties did not disappoint. It was the second time in just a few weeks that Glasgow competed on the same course, and coach Rod Karst felt the team used the experience to their benefit. "Their performance on Saturday was so much stronger than what we showed in Helena two weeks ago," he said. "They learned a lot going to the 7 of 7 meet, and used that to make... Full story
The Glasgow cross country team wrapped up their regular season with both the girls and boys winning at Plentywood Oct.14. With the state competition on the horizon, the Scotties seem to be ready to secure some hardware for the GHS trophy case. Qualifying for the trip to Helena are: Emily Kolstad, Ali Cunningham, Alaina Sallee, Brooke Westby, Katie Kaiser, Lauren Padden, Mattea Piersak, Alexus Nistler (alternate), Ellis McKean, Ike Braaten, Merlin McKean, Wilson Overby, Jacob Meiers, Colin Jamba,... The Scotties competed in two meets last week. First, the squad was in Helena Oct. 5 to get a preview of the course they will be running at the state competion. The Capital City 7 of 7 Invitational utilizes a different format than most meets, with seven separate, consecutive races held on the course. Each participating team was represented by their top seven boys and top seven girls, and the races began with the runners ranked seventh on each team. The day came to an end with the top-ranked...
