The Glasgow Highlanders sent a record 51 competitors to the State AAU Tournament in Great Falls March 9-11. They joined nearly 1,300 other young grapplers and 87 other teams at the event and turned heads with the depth of talent coming out of Glasgow. The Highlanders proved a force to be reckoned with as they produced two state champions, six runners-up, and 23 total placers at the tournament. Hockey season in Glasgow officially came to a close this past weekend as the 14U girls and the Bantam boys competed in their final state tournaments March 9-11. The 14U girls traveled to Williston to compete in the NDAHA 14U tournament. The Ice Dawgs started their weekend off with a 7-0 win against the Crosby Comets, but were unable to pull off another win in the tournament, losing to Grand Forks 12-0, Fargo 5-0, and Williston 5-1. I believe that student involvement in high school sports is one of the surest ways for young adults to learn many life lessons. Unfortunately, not all of those life lessons are positive. Each season, without fail, there seems to be a controversy spurred on by the behavior of a parent, coach, referee, player, fan, or even school administration. Three days ago, the National Weather Service in Glasgow began warning northeast Montana residents: expect a winter storm that will bring heavy and blowing snow. In the days following, the warning was updated and enhanced multiple times, but the NWS never wavered when predicting the severity of the event. The first weekend in March brought the hockey season to an end for three of the Ice Dawg teams. The 19U girls, the High School boys and the PeeWees all competed in their final state tournaments March 2-4. 19U The 19U girls traveled to Grand Forks, N. Glasgow High School's Kennedy Schmidt signed a letter of intent on Feb. 28 to play hockey for the Minot State University (MSU) Beavers. According to officials at MSU, while Schmidt is the fourth recruit to commit to playing for the Beavers, she is the first American to join the team for the 2018-2019 season. The Glasgow Scotties closed out their 2017-2018 season with one win out of three games at the divisional tournament held in Glasgow Feb. 22-24. The Scottie wrestlers wrapped up their 2017-2018 season with a super showing at the state tournament in Billings Feb. 9 and 10. Following a few "rebuilding" years, Glasgow entered this year's tournament with 12 state qualifiers and finished with six of those wrestlers earning individual places. The GHS gym was packed with people Jan. 27 as the Glasgow Wrestling Club hosted more than 400 area wrestlers. With passion and determination, the Highlanders battled tough competitors all day. In what was their best game of the season so far, the Scotties faced the Mavericks in a non-conference game on Jan. 20, and finished with a 79-75 win in double overtime. Alex Fransen, a senior at Glasgow High School, has committed to play football for the Dickinson Blue Hawks. During his football career at GHS, Fransen has been recognized as an outstanding athlete time and time again. The Scottie boys earned a good win vs. Malta on Jan. 12, but fell just short of besting Wolf Point the following night.
