From one corner of the state to the another, the Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder traveled nearly 500 miles to Hamilton for the state swim meet July 30 and 31. The Glasgow/Fort Peck chapter of Walleyes Unlimited held their annual Women's Walleye Tournament Saturday, July 30 on Fort Peck Lake. Taking home the top prize of $1000 were Avis McDowell and Misty Williams of Froid with a total weight of 35.54 pounds caught. This year, 61 teams participated in the tournament and brought in nearly 500 pounds of walleye. The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team finished their eighth weekend of competition July 23 and 24 in Malta, where the divisional swim meet was held. With 370 swimmers from ten veteran teams, the competition was tough. Swimmers must place in the top 12 of their events just to qualify for state competition. It was a tough "building" year for the 2016 Reds', and their season came to a disappointing end at the district tournament in Billings after just two games. The first game for the Reds was held Thursday afternoon, July 21, with Glasgow facing the Sidney Patriots on the diamond. Sidney claimed the lead in the second inning, scoring four runs on a two-run error. The staff of Planned Pethood Plus came a long way for a good cause. With less than half of their usual team of veterinarians and techs on hand, they performed an enormous number of spay/neuter surgeries during the recent clinic offered at the Valley Event Center. The clinic was held over two days, July 15 and 16, and was coordinated and ran wholly by volunteers. Bringing their regular season to a close, the Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team competed at the Sidney Invitational July 16 and 17. The Thunder earned a respectable fourth place with a small number of swimmers participating. The Valley Event Center will once again be a hub of activity July 15 and 16 as it hosts the annual spay and neuter clinic. The mobile spay/neuter clinic is offered by Planned Pethood Plus, Inc. (PPP), which is based in Denver, Colo. Established in 1990 by Dr. Jeff Young as a low cost spay/neuter clinic, PPP has grown and now offers full, affordable veterinary services. The Glasgow Kiwanis Swim Team welcomed 280 swimmers over the Fourth-of-July weekend for their annual invitational meet. Personnel changes again dominated the regularly-scheduled school board meeting held in Nashua on June 21. Following board approval to hire an English teacher (Terri Kaufman) and several classified staff, the trustees also approved student attendance agreements for two students transferring to the Glasgow School District. The Nature Conservancy recently secured a conservation easement on 15,959 acres of land north of Glasgow on the Carroll ranch. The easement, which encompasses all of the private lands along the northern border of the Bitter Creek Wilderness Study Area, will help conserve of one of the most intact grasslands on the continent. The Bitter Creek Wilderness Study Area is the largest proposed grassland wilderness in the Great Plains. The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder competed at their third swim meet of the season June 18 and 19 in Chinook, and placed seventh overall. This past weekend's meet was the first meet held in Chinook since the loss of swimmer Jesse Dannels, who died in a motor vehicle accident earlier this year. The Glasgow Reds traveled to Lewistown for a four-day tournament June 16-19. The young team was unable to snag a win until their final game of the tournament against Dickinson. The 6th annual Aaron Chatten Memorial Softball Tournament drew nine teams to Fort Peck June 18 and 19. A total of 16 games were played on John Hahn Field, and Team Newton Motors (Glasgow) came in clutch on Sunday to win the championship game by two runs against the Shockers from Glendive. It’s been nearly two years since I left Valley View Home. Although I initially resigned my position, I was eventually terminated. Either way, I didn’t leave willingly. The Glasgow Kiwanis Thunder swim team competed in their second meet of the season June 10 and 11, traveling to Scobey for two days of racing.
