The State Class C track meet was held in Great Falls May 25 and 26. Several athletes from our small-but-mighty area competed and put up some impressive performances. The Frazer Bearcubs and the Hinsdale Raiders were well-represented in numbers and each had an athlete achieve podium placement. While our area teams were unable to get their hands on any team hardware, plenty of competitors made it to the podium in their individual events. The class B state golf tournament wrapped up in Shepherd May 16. Both Scottie teams finished ninth overall. The boys had a total score of 739, and the girls finished with 924. For the girls, Heidi Moon led the way with a total score of 202 (104/98), placing 21st, followed by Lexie Pehlke with a 205 score (110/95) in 26th place. The 2018 Montana Cat Circuit kicked off May 12 with the 12th Annual Yellowstone Challenge. The tournament, which is based out of Huntley, boasted 49 boats on Saturday. Local angler and catfish enthusiast Brenner Flaten partnered with his brother Jason of West Wendover, Nev., to reel in a record-breaking 35.68 pounds of the whiskered mud cat. Our community deserves a participation medal. The Torch Run for Special Olympics was held in Glasgow on Thursday. You may have heard sirens, and if you hit any stretch of Highway 2 between 8 and 9 a.m., there’s a good chance you saw a parade with a mixture of emergency support vehicles and pedestrians moving westward. The Torch Run, which is sponsored entirely by law enforcement personnel and their fundraising efforts, began in Montana in 1985. Scottie Field was full of competitors on May 12 as Glasgow hosted the dual district meet for 2B and 3C tracksters. With mild temperatures and just a slight breeze for most of the day, it was a "perfect" day to compete. Scobey swept the 3C track meet held in Glasgow May 12. The boys finished with a team score of 271.5 – more points than all of the other teams combined. The girls finished on top with 175 points. Two Spartans made it on the record boards in individual events as well. I was irritated following the divisional golf meet held in Glasgow May 7. Unless your child is or has been involved with high school golf, you may not be aware that spectators are not allowed on the course. The Montana High School Association mandates: “No spectators/fans are allowed on the course except for certain locations as designated by the tournament manager and club professional”. As a member of the media, the rule poses obvious problems, but most of them can be solved with a good camera lens. As a parent, however, it means missing out...
It was a good day to be a Scottie. After a full day of competition at the Sunnyside Golf Course on May 7, the Glasgow golfers had two teams qualify for state, seven individuals earn all-conference, and one outstanding hole-in-one. The Northeast Special Olympics Fun Day was held at Scottie Field in Glasgow on May 4. To kick off the event, a barbecue was provided from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., to allow community members to meet the local athletes. The annual Top Ten track meet was held at the Glasgow High School the evening of May 1. Records were broken, and the list of state qualifiers grew. Although not as impressive as his recent vault of 16' 9" in Glendive, Garrison Hughes of Sidney still demolished his record 15' 2" vault from the Top Ten meet last year with a new height of 16' 5". The Scottie tracksters hosted their home invitational at Scottie Field April 28. The boys and girls swept the meet with big wins, and four individual athletes qualified for the state competition coming up the end of May. Emily Kolstad punched her ticket with a win in the 400m run and Kaylee King recorded a qualifying high jump. The Scottie softball team has been busy making up for lost time in the last few weeks. Beginning with home games vs. Colstrip on April 21 and ending with one game in Havre April 30, the girls played a total of ten games, recording five wins and five losses. With just one golf meet under their belt, the Scotties hosted their invitational at the Sunnyside Golf Course in Glasgow April 27. The spring sport season has been in upheaval all around the region thanks to Mother Nature, but she provided a beautiful day for competition on Friday. Joe Horn has thrown his hat in the ring as a candidate for Valley County Sheriff in the upcoming election. It is the third time Horn has pursued the position, with previous bids in 2010 and 2014, when he ran against incumbent Sheriff Glen Meiers. It's been a tough spring sports season for the Scottie track and field team. With weather and track conditions impacting most of Montana there have been limited opportunities to get consistent practices, and even fewer opportunities to compete. On April 21, the team was on the road to Lambert for the Sidney Invitational. The meet was held in Lambert due to serious issues with the track complex in Sidney. The Nashua Porcupines hosted their track and field invitational at Scottie Field in Glasgow April 20. With several area schools in attendance and nearly perfect weather, the meet was a success. Nashua's Taylor Laumeyer and Frazer's Jayson Jackson both swept their events with three first-place finishes. Well into the spring sports season, Glasgow hosted its first track meet on April 16, with 23 teams attending. Although the meet is essentially meant to provide an extra opportunity for athletes to qualify for post-season events, this season's event was the first time most of those attending were able to compete at all. Glasgow is being represented by two separate teams at the 2018 Montana USBC Youth Bowling Championship Tournament in Billings. The first two days of competition were April 14 – 15, and the tournament will continue the next two weekends: April 21 - 22, and April 28 - 29. Just two years after making history by launching a wrestling program, the Frazer School District has been forced to cut wrestling from their athletic programs. Jacob Turcotte, head coach for the now-defunct team, explained that the program was cut due to budget constraints and Title IX issues. Title IX mandates that each school district provide gender equality in sports. There must be an equal number of sports offered for girls and boys in order for schools to be in compliance. More than two dozen energetic boys and girls showed up at the Valley Event Center on April 3 to try out for a spot on one of the six "majors" teams. This season, a sixth team was added due to increased interest, which spurred a re-draft of all the teams. Once again, Northeast Montana's unpredictable, yet typical, weather has slowed the start of the spring sports season. Severe weather and heavy snowfall has been a factor in the postponement and cancellation of several spring events.
