It was an eventful Friday for the Valley County Sheriff's Office as officers assisted the Tri-Agency Drug Task Force on Aug. 22. The team acted on a search warrant in the cabin area of Fort Peck Lake at 43 Mallard Drive. The warrant allowed law enforcement to find a marijuana growing operation. The Sheriff's Office reported that an estimated street value of $80,000 of marijuana was found at the location. Suspect names were not immediately released and charges were pending. Not a lot of opposition showed up to the city council meeting on Monday, Aug. 18, as the Glasgow City Council made a final motion to approve the change to an ordinance allowing standing headstones on certain sections of the Highland Cemetery. A U.S. congressional candidate with Glasgow ties visited town Monday, Aug. 18. He explained that his mother was from Glasgow and his father from Glendive. The constant wind and waves at Fort Peck Lake, mixed with the sun and sails, created the perfect environment for the first Fort Peck Can-Am Laser Regatta. Organizers of the event said that the conditions for the weekend couldn't have been better. An arrest was made on Friday, Aug. 8, after an investigation led to a search warrant. St. Marie resident Antonio Hernandez, 31, was arrested and charged with possession of dangerous drugs – felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia – misdemeanor. The drug was reportedly methamphetamine. Any presence of methamphetamine is a felony charge in the state of Montana. With a large body of water and a lot of wind in supply, Fort Peck Lake will become the new location of a sailing event. The first Can-Am Fort Peck Lake Laser Regatta will take place this weekend at the Fort Peck Marina. Events start on Friday, Aug. 15 and continue through Sunday, Aug. 17. The Laser is a small boat with a sail attached. Imagine a boat similar in size to a dingy, about 14 feet in length, with a large white sail attached. His coworkers described him as very intelligent, dedicated and a hard worker. Tragedy struck Saturday when Robert Lee Irwin, 53, of Glasgow, was killed while doing maintenance on a Fossum Ready Mix truck at the Fossum gravel pit north of the city, investigators said. He was found dead at the scene. Valley County Sheriff Glen Meier described it a job-related accident. Irwin had worked for Fossum for 34 years. The accident is still under investigation. Dispatch received the call right around 6 p.m. last Thursday. Mike Doney, Celina Brien and their 2-year-old were out celebrating his birthday when they received a call from a neighbor. The family's home was fully engulfed by the time firetrucks pulled up to the scene on Tihista Road, east of Nashua. A fatal traffic accident took place Saturday on Highway 24, near mile marker 35 in McCone County near Fort Peck. Two women were in the vehicle when the driver tried to avoid a deer in the road and lost control of the vehicle, investigators said. The driver was wearing a seatbelt. The passenger, Samantha Conn, 27,of Morehead, Kentucky, was not and she was ejected from the vehicle. Conn was reported dead on the scene. The young, the old, the healthy and the sick gathered with one mission in common, to raise funds to fight cancer and to take a stand against something that impacts almost everyone. A hearing was set for Thursday, July 31, but District Judge Blair Jones signed off on a motion for summary judgement, dismissing the plaintiff's claims without prejudice and awarding attorney's fees and costs to Jeffrey Robertson. Valley County government is working to fix a problem regarding financial issues said to be discovered in early June and late May. According to county commission meeting minutes for the month of June, billing issues were discovered and brought to the commissioners' attention.
