Tuesday, May 15, was National Peace Officer Memorial Day, and last week in Bozeman two officers, Trooper David DeLaittre and Deputy Mason Moore, were honored for the sacrifice they paid to this state. I will say from what little experience I have, it is not often someone thanks a police officer or sheriff deputy for any of the services they provide. Sure, it is easy to recall the negative encounters many of us have had with law enforcement, but far greater are the times they set out to help those in need. But, we made the laws and asked them...
On the morning of April 27, a farmer surveying cattle from the air discovered an oil spill approximately five miles west of the Frazer/Richland Road and East Grains Road Junction. The farmer reported the spill to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), who notified Valley County Dispatch and the Fort Peck Tribes Office of Environmental Protection. Both entities sent personnel to the scene to investigate. The contract operator of the well, Adaranko Minerals Inc, had started the cleanup by the...

Uphaus sat down with the Courier to talk about his experience, his motivation for running and why he thinks he is the best person for the job. When Sean R. Heavey watched an episode of Netflix's Stranger Things some months back, he couldn't help but feel a sense of familiarity about the storm in the scene he was watching. To hear Heavey tell it, he had to go back multiple times to freeze the scene and verify it was not his image in the special effects of the cut. Heavey had moved on, when a friend happened to be watching the Netflix documentary Beyond Stranger Things, and noticed a striking similarity between a concept art depiction...
The deadline to register to vote in the upcoming June primary election is Monday, May 7. If you are not registered to vote by the deadline, you can still register to vote in the upcoming November election, but you will not receive a ballot for the primary. The only local race that will require a primary vote is the Valley County Commissioner race to fill the seat being vacated by Bruce Petersen. There are seven candidates vying for a shot at that seat. The primary will also decide the statewide Democrat and Republican nominees for U.S. House...

The City of Glasgow is seeking applicants for the city’s Sidewalk, Curb and Gutter program. According to Glasgow Mayor Becky Erickson, the program is to assist homeowners in beautifying their curbs, sidewalks and gutters, without having to self-finance or push for a local special improvement district. The program works by taking applications, which are due this year by June 1, for the improvements. The city will then send out City Planner Rob Kompel to survey the area with the homeowner and submit the application with the proposed work and s...
Many of us take the little things in life for granted, like receiving a birthday cake or having a celebration. For some people, that is not always the case. Many people are food insecure and organizations like the food bank have been helping to change those circumstances for years. But what happens when there is a child whose family cannot necessarily afford the supplies needed to celebrate their birthday? That same question brought St Raphael's third-grade class to the food bank, to deliver,...
The Bureau of Land Management North Central Montana District Manager Mark Albers, spoke to the Courier about American Prairie’s grazing. As has been reported in previous editions, the American Prairie Foundation Inc. is attempting to remove interior fencing on their BLM leased lands, fortify the external fencing with an electric wire, and they are applying to graze bison year-round. The BLM’s role in that request began with a scoping period in which the agency is seeking input from the public on what issues, if any, should be considered in the...

So, it is not everyday I get to start a column with such a cliche, but in this case I believe the title is cliche for a reason. The votes coming up are important and meaningful and need to be decided on by as much of Valley County as possible. Therefore, I wanted to take this time to get up on my soapbox and ask each and every one of you to vote in the upcoming elections. Currently, there is an election to pass a hospital district to support Valley View Home, and a school levy vote intended to help raise teacher salaries. Both are due to be...
The Bureau of Land Management held a “scoping” meeting in Glasgow April 12 to ask for public comment on an environmental assessment being conducted by BLM. The meeting was well attended by farmers, ranchers, and local government representatives who mostly attempted to express their concerns of the proposal. According to BLM...

I want to inform all of our readers that it is the intent of the Glasgow Courier to take the Bureau of Land Management to task over their decision making process for the American Prairie Reserve’s request to remove interior fencing and graze bison year-round. The story you see this week will not be the end of our questioning of how the BLM is making its decision. The public comment in this paper and other forums around the Hi-Line speak for themselves that this issue has been charged with fear, polarization and muddied by bureaucratic p...

Malta resident Susan Green knows first hand what it is like to lose a baby early on. She lost one of her twins in utero over 17 years ago. According to Brandi Knierim, a registered nurse at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital, the idea behind a...
