    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Mar 11, 2020

The rape trial of disgraced ex-Valley County Undersheriff Luke Strommen has been delayed after the judge in the case granted the defense a continuance for an unknown period of time. The trial had been set to start on March 9, but was canceled at the last minute leaving the dozens called out for jury duty reeling to reschedule their days and, in some cases, get back to work. It was unclear at press time what justified the last minute continuance. The trial had been set after a November trial was vacated as Strommen pleaded guilty to one of two...

With cool temps forecast for the coming weekend, the National Weather Service in Glasgow is anticipating a slowing of that current melting and subsequent flooding. In the first nine days of March, the daily temperatures in Glasgow were consistently above freezing. In fact, with the exception of March 8...

  • Bennion Talks Advocacy and Justice

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Mar 4, 2020

Fighting for Montana’s most vulnerable would just be another bullet in a series of political priorities for almost any other candidate, but for Attorney General Candidate John Bennion, the talking point hits a little closer to home. Bennion’s son, Jack, was born four-months premature and now lives with Cerebral Palsy and is a non-verbal fourth grader. Advocating for his son has been a priority for the MT DOJ Attorney that has made him a self-published author of a children’s book (The Adventures of Jack Pant—Amazon) to educate his son’s p...

Most recently, Graybill has worked as Governor Bullock’s Chief Legal Counsel in Helena effectively championing issues for the governor’s office in both state and federal court. One such case Graybill cited as pivotal in his decision to run for AG, was a case he took to the Supreme Court in Montana involving a ranching family that was using the Habit...

In the first round of play, the Lady Scotties met the Malta M-Ettes in the early afternoon of Feb. 21. The Scotties had just come off a win against the same team the week prior and were looking to repeat the effort on Friday. That would not be the outcome the Scotties received though, and Malta would arise victorious by six...

  • Marj Markle Makes Scottie History

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Feb 19, 2020

For Marj Markle, basketball started at a young age among her competitive siblings. She remembered playing ball in the driveway of their home on the Glasgow Air Force Base almost every night. As the middle child of six-stuck smack in between four brothers and the youngest of only two girls-Markle remembered learning to play tough early on. That grit and competitiveness would lead to a lifetime of athletic achievements, putting her name in the Montana High School Association Hall of Fame this...

  • Scotties Achieve Alchemy - Turn Silver Into Gold

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Feb 19, 2020

You would have been forgiven if you had worried about the Scotties' chances at the State Tournament in Billings on Feb. 14 and 15. A tough season with a number of challenges, illnesses, injuries, a second-place finish to Huntley Project at Divisionals and a series of peaks and valleys at State had set the tone at the close of business Friday at Metra Park. That tone was short-lived however, and on Saturday morning the Scotties rallied to go undefeated in their first seven matches of the second...

Facing off against the Wolf Point Wolves on Feb. 13, the Lady Scotties launched an all out assault on the hoop, scoring 18 in the first quarter, 14 in the second, 12 in the third and 27 in the final round. The Scotties managed to hold the Wolves as well and they ended the game ahead by 31 points-71 to 40. Unwilling to make their last...

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Feb 19, 2020

The starting line-up for the game included all five Scottie seniors-Kobe Sibley, Alec Boland, Tim Wageman, Saul Hansen and Jayson Turner. Unfortunately, the festivities of senior night were short-lived after the Wolves finished out the first quarter ahead by three-13 to 16. That lead would have been more than manageable, but in the second half the Scottie boys slipped even...

  • Schuster Files For HD34

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Feb 12, 2020

For Tracy Schuster, running for House District 34 is about getting involved as a citizen and doing her part towards better governance. She says that she feels called to serve, citing the direction of the country and her view that what is happening in America is not what is best for this country. "I think a lot of the political scene has become so vitriolic that people kind of pull away from it, they tune it out," said Schuster discussing the political environment in the country. "That just...

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Feb 12, 2020

He died alone and was buried, with everything he owned, in a plywood box at a small cemetery in Hinsdale, Mont. That is the end to the story of Marine Bruce Powers, age of 79, after dying in the dementia unit of Valley View Home. As a widower and estranged from his remaining family, Powers was left in the hands of the county to be buried. For those reasons, he was buried in a funeral plot owned by the county on Feb. 6. The only attendees were the mortuary staff, Sheriff Tom Boyer, director of...

  • Down But Not Out

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Feb 12, 2020

It was not the outcome the team wanted, but its not over either. That was the sentiment put off by Scottie head wrestling coach Jory Casterline after his team finished in the runner-up slot at the Eastern B/C Divisional Wrestling Tournament in Huntley Project on Feb. 8. Regardless of expectations, the Scotties still pulled off a second-place finish and punched 10 tickets to State-which included two freshmen but not a top-ranked senior. They fell in the point count behind Huntley Project by a...

  • Scottie Boys and Girls Fall to Wildcats, Spartans

    A.J. Etherington, The Courier|Feb 12, 2020

The Scottie boys basketball team met up with the Harlem Wildcats on the floor of the Scottie gymnasium on Feb. 6, but the outcome was nowhere close to what the team expected walking out on the court that evening. In the beginning, the game seemed to be unfolding like many others. By the end of the first quarter, the Scottie boys trailed by a single point against the Wildcats (17-18). Then in the second they fell slightly but maintained a manageable point spread of five points going into the half...

They certainly did not run out of motivation as they fought with all their might to the last second to score every basket possible against Harlem. In the end though the only thing they needed was a longer quarter. In the first three quarters the Scotties fell behind by nearly 30 points but battled back to close the gap in the fourth quarter and bring it down to a single-digit...
