Girls beat Scobey 42-29 in first game of 2010

Strong fourth quarter spurs second win over Spartans

For the second time this season the Glasgow girls' basketball team beat the Scobey Spartans, this time at home with a 42-29 victory.
The rust from a long holiday break showed in both teams in the first quarter. With both playing great defense, neither team was able to get a consistent shot or get anything going. The first quarter ended with a 2-2 tie.
The game picked up after that but was back and forth for the second and third quarters. Neither team could get separation on the score board. Glasgow went into halftime up by one point, but the Spartans quickly came back and the score was tied at 26-26 entering the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, the Scotties finally got into gear, ramping up the pace and sprinting to an easy win. After trying to execute the half-court offense for most of the game the Scotties flourished after transitioning to the full-court press. Glasgow outscored Scobey 16-3 in the final quarter, capitalizing from Spartan turnovers.
“We have to press to get the tempo up,” head coach Willie Thibault said. “Our kids play well in the uptempo game.”
The faster play opens passing lanes and keeps the defense moving allowing the Scotties to play a cleaner game Thibault said.
“We'll get better as the year goes but the more uptempo I think the defense is scrambling a little bit,” Thibault said. “In the half-court set (other teams) are going to be in the passing lanes and our decisions need to be better.”
Taylor Markle led the team with 15 points while also collecting six rebounds, an assist and a steal. Chloe Sukut had eight points, a game-high seven rebounds and two steals.  Tiffany Wetzel scored seven points and six rebounds and Shelby Fossum scored six points and had five rebounds. Rose Reyling and Jami Johnson rounded out the scoring with four and two points, respectively.
This week, the girls begin the heavy part of their conference schedule. After defeating Harlem on Dec. 18, the Scotties are 1-0 in conference play but they face a big challenge in playing both Wolf Point and Plentywood on the road.
The Wolves have a huge front line that the undersized Scotties will have to contend with and their guards have speed and range. Plentywood has a tall team with four girls taller than 5-foot-9 in their starting lineup.
“We've got to prepare for pressure and we've got to prepare for them to pound the ball in,” Thibault said. “When we take away the post they're going to kick it out and (Wolf Point has) three good shooters on the perimeter. We're going to have to pressure we're going to have to push.”
Glasgow plays in Wolf Point on Friday and in Plentywood on Saturday.
