Two sets into its match against Plentywood on Saturday and the Glasgow volleyball team was cruising, just as it had in the two days prior.
The Scotties made quick work of Harlem and Malta, defeating both relatively easily.
Harlem marked the girls' first home match of the season, and the Scotties powered through the overmatched Lady Cats in three sets. Led by junior outside hitter Shelby Fossum, who posted 11 kills on the night, the Scotties won 25-12, 25-14, 25-9.
At Malta on Friday night, the girls handled business again, this time winning in four sets in their first game against the rival Mustangs this season.
That momentum carried through Saturday, as the Scotties easily took the first set 25-11.
Plentywood seemed off in the second set as well, as Glasgow, who found itself down early, came back and beat the Lady Cats 25-19.
As the teams switched sides, the Glasgow stands roared in anticipation of another sweep by the Scotties. The cheerleaders riled up the student section and the Scotties smiled on the court.
In the Plentywood huddle, the Lady Cats, a team stocked of mostly seniors, took the first two sets hard. As their coach tried to pull them together, there was some tears of frustration as the players tried to game plan the next set.
The next set was hotly contested. The Scotties took a late lead, 17-16, but were unable to stretch the gap. Plentywood came back with a huge run to take their first set of the night 25-19.
The Scotties would find themselves in a similar situation in the fourth set. Riding the hot arm of Erin Bell, who led the team with 25 kills, three blocks and 12 aces, the Scotties got within one point of taking the match, but couldn't close the Lady Cats out, losing the set 26-24.
In the deciding fifth set, neither team refused to budge.
The Scotties once again got a chance at a match point but kept missing their chances until finally they were able to edge Plentywood 18-16, winning the match 3-2.
“I guess we learned that we can get out of a dog fight,” head coach Lori Dailey said.”I think we got a little bit complacent in playing well and instead of fighting for every point we just assumed points would come our way. That's a dangerous game in volleyball.”
The team does get good news for next week, as all of its members will be healthy and practicing for the first time this season.
“It'll be nice to have all ten of them healthy again.” Dailey said.
The Scotties play again Friday against Wolf Point at Glasgow High School.
